Did you receive these calls on your cell phone? I ask this because I've read that cell phones numbers are prone to being recycled, so it's possible that your number used to be someone else's.

    See: http://www.ctvnews.ca/sci-tech/phone-numbers- ... digits-1.966725

Sometimes the previous user doesn't bother to update their phone number, so the agency still has that number attached to that user's name. Just my 2¢.

Collection agency!!  Keep calling me for info on friends.  I belive in a person's right to privacy so I tell them nothing and do not even acknowledge I know the person. They use excuses like they are an old friend trying to get in contact etc.  All lies and deceipt from these people.  Tell them nothing and get rude with them.  For every question they ask, I ask a question in return and do not answer their questions.  Remember legally they are under no obligation to tell the truth about anything to anyone, and they don't - they lie and are deceiptful to everyone, so I lie to them - an eye for an eye!

IMPORTANT:Get the legal name of the company, and the employee's name and ID number (they lie about their names) from them and make a written record of the date, time, name, id number etc.  If u want them to stop calling you, tell then you are "issuing a  NO CONTACT ORDER against them and their company.  No one from the company, including third parties - ie. lawyers, agents, sub contractors, etc, are not allowed to contact you ever again"  AND ORDER them to remove all your information from their data base - yep they know all about you and your credit and financial info too, and will be after you to pay your friends/family members debt.  Tell them if anyone ever contacts you again, it shall be considered harassment, abuse, and assault by tresspass by violating the no contact order, and you shall persue legally against them personally and the company - (thats why you get their Employee ID number).  Also tell them you are recording the call as evidence.  It's a good idea to do this in fact for future evidence you may need.  My Lawyer says it's legal - I do it and it's legal as long as one caller is active on the line and knows the call is being recorded - they are recording the call too - but they edit their recordings - be aware and don't trust them.
They record the calls, tell them to record yours so they have a record of the no contact order.  This shuts them up and they won't bother you again - if they do file a complaint citing the no contact order, date, time, and employee id of who it was given to.
People have enough trouble and stress in their lives when they reach this point without the harrassment and abuse from collection companies.
Also NEVER NEVER NEVER pay even one cent towards someone else's bill or lend them money to pay their bills - in the eyes of the law that means you now also assume liability for ALL the bills and you will end up paying it all - been there done that - a $40,000.00 lesson that bankrupted me!  These people are ruthless, have lawyers on staff, and don't care about anyone, they just want the money.  They make Ebenezer Scrooge look like a Saint.

I got a million calls from them in two days finally called them back . I was rude as hell. they didn't even know who the heck they were trying to call. I said who is this a Jennifer and asked if they were trying to figure out a French name.
I asked about this so called file # which they would not give me any info on.. Said it is personal. I said I guess so but stop calling my house as that person does not even live here. I have no idea who you are trying to call. No apology , no nothing  they just hung up . then I went a step further onto there web site and filed a complaint and stated that if they called my house even one more time I would be filing a no contact order as suggested on here. thanks for that whomever that was. I then Also stated that I was calling the cops and filing a complaint which I am going to do .these little a***s NEED TO STOP . I HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF YOU CALLING MY HOUSE WHENEVER you think you can.

Someone used me as a reference, and maybe provided my phone # as the # to call. So the debt collector is calling me instead of the guy who owes the debt.

Yes and no....had this corporate # for 4 years before I started getting these phone calls....obviously someone gave out a fake phone number on purpose. Probably for the express reason to commit some kind of fraud like run up debt and not pay.

Legally they are not allowed to call you at work. Check under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs or just Google Rules that debt collection agencies must follow in Canada or wherever you live..  It will give you the information.  Most people DO NOT KNOW what these agencies are permitted to do when collecting a debt.  Therefore, their practices of fear and intimidation usually work.  If it is a debt that the company you owe it to was incurred 7 years ago, they have long since written it off. These agencies will buy up the debt and try to collect it for a percentage or a fee.  That's how they make their money.  Additionally, for them to take you to court, the client usually needs to give consent, and this wont happen if the debt is too small and the court costs will be more.  It is well known that courts frown on the tactics used by these agencies and very often will find in favor of the person who has been harassed. This means that taking you to court unless the original debt is hundreds of thousands of dollars is a waste of time and/or money. Alternatively, you can also get a membership with Legal Shield, which allows you access to an attorney 24/7 and once you have your membership number, an attorney will draft up a cease and desist letter on your behalf which can then be sent to the collection agency and they will stop. Guaranteed. Legal Shield membership is about 40.00 per month and is well worth it, since stuff DOES happen unexpectedly. Google them. It may be the solution you need.

    discharged yet harrassed
DCA is "Debt Control Agency" in Laval and Toronto. Per the Ministry of Consumer Services site (https://www.sse.gov.on.ca/mcs/en/Pages/Person ... ncy_Rights.aspx):
"The agency cannot continue to contact you if:
•you send a registered letter to the agency saying that you dispute the debt and suggest the matter be taken to court
•you (or your lawyer) send a registered letter to the agency providing your lawyer’s contact information and notifying the agency  to communicate only with your lawyer
•you have told them that you are not the person they are looking for, unless they take reasonable precautions to ensure you are that person."

They also must give you their collector license #, which you want for any complaint you may file. In my case they called re a debt cleared 16 years ago under bankruptcy. They weren't even aware of the bankruptcy, and claimed that the debts accrued 4 years AFTER the date I told them for my discharge (there were in fact no new charges as I had no credit card for 7+ years after the discharge). "Mr Hilton" insisted I could have gotten another cred card from the same store within the 4 years (as if!) and threatened that they would make repeated enquiries on my credit file, resulting in a 0 rating! This lie violates the requirement that they not provide false information. He could not tell me what these later charges were, or even what the account number wasl
DCA also did not provide written notice before calling (claimed I could have thrown it away or was lying). Of course they wanted interest and offered to accept about 1.5x the original amount as a "one-time offer".

I am left with the impression that DCA tries to collect on discharged debts by the extortion threat of damaging one's credit rating if one does not pay up even after a debt is dissolved in bankruptcy.

If they call again I'll send a copy of the discharge and a demand to cease contact and seek settlement in court if they wish (via a registered letter as per above option). It is ~possible~ that the creditor erred and DCA didn't actually know it was a cleared debt, but I have my doubts. Either way, they bend the rules, are disrespectful and aggressive, and are a sleazy operation.

Yes, DCA is a ruthless debt collection agency that will keep hunting and chasing you even though you've already cleared an old debt.  I owed Hudson Bay Company 500$ back in 1994, but this was settled in 2001.

Well, last year June 2012 (after 11 years), they kept calling and calling my Mom's phone number (???) for an "unpaid debt of 500$ in 2001 that was now worth 2000$ and + with interest".

    What????

I called DCA and explained that Hudson Bay Company got it all wrong and they couldn't keep track of their records as this was settled back in 2001.  And please, stop calling and harassing me (and my Mom!) or I will fill a complain.

The lady at DCA agreed and said this looked "bizarre" and she almost apologized for the inconvenience. They stopped calling and I never heard back from them until yesterday...  yep, 1 year and half later, they're back at it again...

At this point, I'll have a lawyer taking care of it.

Here's what I found on their addresses in Ontario and Quebec.
    Hope this can help:
