Just got a second Call from "Tom Griffin"   of "NorthStar" .... He gave me the Number of 866-224-9825 for a family member ... went to the website below which advised that he the caller must advise that the call is an attempt to collect a debt.

I was not advised of that fact.  THE CALLER VIOLATED THE LAW.  I am not a debtor.  I do not know how this person got my number.   I will report him to the authroities and hope all others do as well.

Very rude and would not give information about the call. I informed him that he was very rude and was told he didn't have to be nice or courteous, he was a debt collector I assume.

    Tired of fancy loan sharks
All the people from Northstar are exceptionally rude, nasty and unwilling to talk with people who are trying to make good on a debt.  They or their computers call all the time and when I called back to make payments with legal tender in the form of a money, their representative hung up on me just after she said that she was marking the account "refused to pay".  They insist they will only work with you if they have a check number on file, which means that they can try to take money at any time without benefit of a court hearing or garnishment proceedings.  They's nasty in hopes of intimidating people into giving them what they want.  They use lots of changing toll free numbers--the number is different every time.  Bad, bad collection people.  They might as well work the streets and use fists like the old time loan sharks--at least they were honest about who and what they were.  This agency does not abide by any of the debt collection rules.

Has called repeatedly and left voice mail.  Now he (Steve Cole) got a hold of me personally.  He's looking for my girlfriends father.  How he got my number is beyond me. Is it legal to look up anyone with any relation to the debtor and call them to probe for information? He did not give me any more info as to why he was calling other than "it's business." He did give me his name and the number listed below. (I don't have caller ID)

try on this one and I still will pay on this but not when they lie and put me so down. And they say I have a bad check with them and my bank says I
do not any way it goes on and on with them.

Kate Stevens from Northstar called a relative of mine asking for me.  When I called them back, I asked if they were a collection agency, they said NO! Anyway, when I called back the next day, they couldn't find why they were trying to reach me.  Kate Stevens from Northstar said she was calling on behalf of Chrysler.  They had 2 different phone numbers.  The first person I talked to was very rude and would not give me any information.

They don't have to be courteous. This is NOT Customer Service. However, as a bill collector, I always am. I don't see the sense in being mean if I am asking someone for money. They can call your job and your relatives. According to the FDCPA, you may request, in writing-fax if the agency accepts it- not to be called at work. In some states that request is only good for 10 days. They can call you at home- once a day in most states- every 5 days in some- between the hours of 8am and 9pm.
If you are not the debtor (unless you are the debtor's spouse in most states) that CAN'T say why they are calling- that is called 'third Party Disclosure'. Therefore, if you are not the debtor- they will not say "This is an attempt to collect a debt.." That would give it away.

If you no longer wish to pass the phone number along to a family member, ask that your number be removed. If the debtor doesn't live with you, they can't call anymore.

As long as you are the debtor and it is a 'due debt', you can't stop the calls at home.

If you dispute the debt, you have 30 days to dispute it in writing.

I know that Norststar has a skip tracing department- for the purpose of reposessing vehicles for Chrysler. Skip tracers are not bound by the rules of the FDCPA. AND, that department is not a  collection agency.

If a representative is offering you a reasonable settlement, they have the option to press for a post-dated check or post dated debit (except in 1 state- I think Mass.) Only about 50% of the people who say they are going to mail a check or money order actually do. I only allow people who don't actually posess a bank account to send a mail in payment if they are settling. If they are paying in full in a payment arrangement, they can mail in $20 a week on a $5,000 bill. It's fine with me.

At Northstar, your banking information is not taken by the collections rep- it is taken by a remittance processing department and they are strictly trained to follow the debtor's directions as to amount, date and frequency. With 48 business hours notice, one can easily cancel or post- pone an automated transaction.

Phone numbers mainly come from Experian- Experian sells them to collection agencies. 5-10 numbers will be associated with 1 person and they are not dated. They could be old or new- the agency has no way to know.

Skip tracing for close relatives is allowed. Often a family member will pass on the phone number to the debtor. It is fully legal.

There are some very shady, boiler room-type collection agencies- but Northstar is not one of them.

Most of the bills are on consignment with them from the original creditor or whomever the creditor sold it to. If you go ahead and pay the origonal creditor, Northstar gets credit anyway. It would be silly for them to go around collecting bills that they have not contracted to collect.

1 last thing--Northstar doesn't change numbers- They have about 6 different toll-free numbers- separated by- in general- 1) Department store/banking debt 2)Reposessions 3) Credit cards. If a supervisor gives you a different number than what showed up on your caller ID, it is simply the one he/she uses in their department.

    Try www.privactrights.org/fs/fs27-debtcoll.htm

Very informative. I am dealing with a couple of yubbos who think I have an unpaid debt with our local phone company. We called our phone company to confirm. I started receiving cryptic phone messages from a Walter wurtemburg who would leave no information. He claimed to need to speak to me. I tried calling the number retrieved by *66ing his call but only got voicemail. Some other ding dong told my wife she owed money and tried weedling out her social security number. Our phone company told us they would straighten this matter out as we owe nothing to them. Again they called and left a message. I returned the call and was greeted by a very nasty man who would not identify his purpose, company, debtor, or amount. I told him not to call again or the Attorney General's office would be called. He started screaming at me. So I hung up and called the Attorney General's office. Dude, Call the authorities.

I hope the link helps you and yours out. Good luck.
