I just received a phone call from this number.  I don't usually answer unknown numbers, but I did this time -- but catch myself and quickly hung up.  There was a person asking for me as I hung up.  Does anyone have any idea of what business this number belongs to?

They have called more than once, I do not recognize the number and do not answer it.

Got a call from this number - automated - asking to speak to someone named Chris something and said if this is you press 1 otherwise press 2...pressed 2...then it asked to get the person on the phone or if not available press 2...then says if wrong number press 3 - so I pressed 3.  It then said you must call back a toll free number.  (Uhhh...wait, you called ME...Fu** That).  For fun (and the hope of chewing someone out) I called the number...disconnected.  Uhhh..What?  I am guessing it was a bill collector but no idea.

come on folks! we have a idea who it is.

They called me on my cell phone. i called them from a blocked line @ work . they stated their name was vanessa form carrison smithfield or harrison smithfield  i then disconected to research, No public info about said company.

Gary, Please enlighten us.  Beyond a high probability of a bill collector, who is it?

877-394-5975 is CARSON SMITHFIELD formally called CARDWORKS SERVICING a Debt Collector I called them using free call using g-mail so they can't get my number, which if you call them it gives them permission to call number you call from. They just changed there name this week I talked to them on 4-6-2012. Remember sue them if they harass  you.

If this was cardworks, than they are a debt collector for Avanta.  Works great for me since I settled with Avanta a couple years ago and sent a C&D to Cardworks.  Time to call the lawyer.

THIS IS A SCAM!!!  This group contacted my neighbors and my relatives and said I was in trouble for debt collection.  This is a scam  They try to scare people into getting personal information.  Please dont call them back  you will be harrassed forever.  Just ignore calls from this group and contact your local sherriff department to report.

May I ask, what kind of settlement were you able to get?  I quit paying them a few years ago when they jacked my interest rate from a "lifetime" 7% to 29% overnight, without any late pays.  Now, at their 29% rate, I owe them about $3k more than the original $5500 I owed them.

Cardworks apparently wanted to create a captive collection agency, for whatever reason, and being fans of late night comedy and pork products, they named it Carson Smithfield, LLC. They're calling on Advanta "debts" (I put that word in quotes because as usurious as Advanta became, the "debts" can hardly be called just and lawful).

I don't think anyone will ever be sued on an Advanta debt ever again, but even if I'm wrong, there's nobody at Advanta anymore who could testify to the accuracy and methods of their recordkeeping so that the business records exception to the hearsay rule would allow for the court to admit the records. A lot of debtors might get rolled over with default judgments and a few courts would probably blow off the rules of evidence (it happens, this is the real world folks), but it would always be worth it to fight.

These are business debts, so the FDCPA does not apply and you'll have to look to whatever state laws protect you from their harassment. If you don't want them calling neighbors and relatives, you'll have to talk to them. Stand your ground and tell them "NO" ... and don't give them any free information. I can't tell you whether or when they'll stop calling, but because of age, these accounts cannot be high priority for anyone at this point.

They continually call me regarding an old debt with Advanta, unfortunately they refuse to offer a reasonable settlement amount (they won't take anything less than 50% which is contrary to every other card company) which means to me that they must have purchased the all debts from the FDIC when they took over Advanta for mismanagement.
    The sad part for them is I had a payment schedule in place with Advanta at a low interest rate (which I paid monthly for well over a year). When they took over the debt they refused to honor the agreement and jacked my interest rate back to over 20% at which point I stopped making payments. Explained to them that I was on the "five year plan" and wished to continue. They refused so I haven't sent them anything since (been about a year to two years).
     I suspect the name change was to create the illusion that they're a legal firm. They're definitely not a credit card company otherwise they would have accepted my 28% of the balance offer to settle since the account had already charged off and they've already declared the loss.

There calling me, too, on an  Advanta debt.  When Advanta raised my interested from a fixed 7% to 37% overnight they blew me out of the water.  And I'd never missed or been late on one payment.  I wasn't able to make the new much higher payment and after trying for a month or two quit paying all together.  This does worry me that they are calling now...I'd hoped the Advanta debt had quietly gone away...Had Advanta honored their agreement with me I wouldn't be in this spot now.  Very nerve wracking to say the least.
