I keep seeing people over and over telling posters to post on singular threads that apply to one number.
The problem is these scams come from LOTS of numbers. I don’t know what this thread is here for if not for the complaints being posted. At the top of the page here it reads.
    " 909" area code fraud scams / fake “
Seems like the right place to me. If anyone is burying these posts it’s all the corrections being posted telling others where they should go. Why is it bothering you?
    Just Curious.

The thread was also created in April 2012, when people were wondering why many calls were being made from a single Area Code, which turned out to be what is now known as "neighbor spoofing". There is nothing more to be gained by posting about a specific area code of the various unrelated calls from it, as nearly ALL the area codes suffer the same predicament. If it was the same scam outfit for all of the "909" numbers or something that tied them all together besides neighbor spoofing, I would agree this thread would have some meaning today.  But it does not.

People want to know who called and posting about various unrelated scams, telemarketing, debt collection, etc., calls from the 909 area code in the same thread is redundant, as it doesn't help people know which 909-xxx-xxxx number their caller was calling about when they have to read through the many "extra" pages in search of the number they want to know about. Most people don't want to read beyond the first page in the threads dedicated to a specific number, so how many do you think will want to sift thru 50 some pages to see if their 909 number is
    even "listed"?

So, it is constantly being mentioned by the community that posting about a number in the thread created just for that number is where they should post, otherwise it will only wind up buried...and not just by Community members explaining why you should post in the correct thread. Each person who posts about "their" 909 call buries the previous ones page by page...now at 56.

That is WHY there is a thread for each one, so people can find out about that number and not need to read through 50-60 pages to find out about the one that called them. If you want to see only the 909 area code calls, then there is a page just for that too.

Its easy to find information about numbers when people post in the correct place.

That thread is empty. Without any information posted there, your guess is as good as anyone else's.

Let's say a geologist wants to keep cataloged mineral samples from all over the world in her laboratory. But instead of having sturdy shelves and drawers built for the purpose, she simply dumps her collection into a pile on the Linoleum floor and later tosses on new rocks as they are acquired. It will soon be very inconvenient to locate a specific sample, and there is a growing chance that multiple examples of the same mineral will be embedded even if extras are not needed. Someone could tack on a few notes along the way nagging the geologist to get a better system, but mostly it will be the pile itself obscuring its own contents.

Search engines often get around this issue, being designed to sift data rubble. But their results can be incomplete, misleading, or wrong, which is why some form of tidy cataloging is still desirable. 800Notes has a number thread structure which makes content searching easier for both humans and algorithms, and we only cheat ourselves when we ignore it. The forums here are unique and can be very good tools for spotting trends and viewing the bigger pictures. They're not so good at organizing comments and observations.

Some perspective is needed here as well. This thread was upchucked into being by a certain Chris, aka CJ, an obstinate type whose signature writing style was apparently consumed with a stuttering space bar. Back in the day he slapped up several inane threads built around area codes, and crashed into existing forum threads, and seeded them with laundry lists of phone numbers. This behavior attracts novice users from Google results, who model the bad behavior with their own context-free "add this number to the list" posts without realizing they're not "adding" to anything but a bigger mess.

When you see some of us objecting to the rock piles, we are trying to promote better use of the site, a desire echoed by Admin's prior locking and throttling of some of those "Chris/CJ/area code of the week" threads. I'd agree with the rebuttal from Mike H, and pass along similar reactions from 5.5 years ago in a short-lived "area code" thread.
