What's the point on being on the DNC registry?  Since I registered, my phone has blown up with unwanted and unsolicited calls!

These people are relentless.  Once they realized that I wasn't answering my cell, they began calling and harrassing me at work!  Trying to intimidate me by telling me it was about "my case."  When I asked what case, she said "I'm just a paralegal, I can't discuss that with you."  My response:  I am a paralegal too, you have called a law firm and I know that this is a scam, DO NOT call me at work again.  Unfortunately, it took 3 more harrassing calls and my boss getting on the phone before they gave up.  Hopefully, they will permanently give up!

If you are targeted by these criminals, be sure to report them to all the following federal and state law enforcement agencies (most of which you can do online or over the phone):
    1.    The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.
    2.    Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement or lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, be sure to include that information in your report.
    3.    File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone.  Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.
    4.    File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.wvago.gov
    5.    File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)

By the way, here's just a small sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern time and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:

    Scam alert: Bogus debt collectors
    By Leslie McFadden • Bankrate.com
    Monday, Aug. 3
    Posted 2 p.m.
Bankrate reporter Leslie McFadden contributed this entry.
This scam isn't technically about credit cards, but it is scary enough to post a warning. The Better Business Bureau issued an alert today saying consumers across the country are getting phone calls from bogus debt collectors claiming default on a payday loan. Of course, the consumer needs to pay a large fee to avoid arrest -- as much as $1,000.
The caller poses as a lawyer, and may threaten extradition to face trial if the consumer doesn't pay up immediately.
What makes these calls alarming -- and perhaps convincing -- is that the perpetrators reference the consumer's personal information, such as the person's Social Security number, driver's license number, previous bank account numbers, home address -- even personal references.
"The amount of information they have is really troubling," says BBB spokeswoman Alison Southwick. She adds that the amount of data points to a possible security breach.
Spread the word to your friends and family: Don't give out personal or financial information to an unknown caller. Scammers can spoof Caller ID to display different numbers, so trust your instincts over technology.
    The BBB offers these tips:
    •    Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation which substantiates the debt.
    •    Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the phone until you have confirmed the legitimacy of the call.
    •    File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission online if the caller is abusive, uses threats or otherwise violates federal telemarketing laws or the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    •    File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau online if you believe a debt collector is trying to scam you.

Christina, I agree since I registered with the DNC list I get more garbage calls than ever before. I wonder if it is possible that these people have some sort of software that can search any or all number sequences and pick out the ones that do not show up meaning those that are on the DNC list or land lines that are unlisted. I did telemarketing work about 20 years ago and this is how we got unlisted land line numbers to call.

Received a phone call from this number stating that I would be arrested tomorrow if I didn't pay $861. They put the"Attorney General of California" on the line telling me I owed the money. They wanted me to write a letter, stating that I owed them the money with my driver's license and it had to be notarized. These people are scam artists who caused me great grief and ruined my day!

These scammers left a message on my answering machine threatening me with legal prosecution for a debt. Upon calling back, the person I talked with (Craig) asked me to verify personal information. I answered very little, but what he had was correct. He would not give information on his company and claimed that I took a loan out with Payday Cash Network over the internet that was never paid back. He said it could be solved out of court. At this time I asked him to give me a contact number for the loan agency, which he refused. He kept asking why I never paid the loan back. I kept telling that I didn't take this loan. This went on until he finally hung up on me. After calling back, he immediately hung up. Tracing his number I was only able to locate it in Kent, Washington. Payday Cash Network websites today are non functional on the internet. Just a coincidence? A complaint has been filed with the Attorney General.

    haha
They left a message on my phone, for someone else that i dont even know. I called them and told them I was the person they were looking for and they gave me that persons social, bank account number, the bank they use, where they work, a contact person with their phone number, their address, drivers license number, and all kinds of other stuff. This is scary that they so openly handed out some unknowing persons information. If I were a thief I could have easily stolen someones identity just now. I finally told them I wasn't the person they were looking for but I was that persons attorney and they just broke about 6 different federal laws and they hung up. I have tried calling them back about 10 times and it just goes to a voicemail box that is full. Whatever you do don't give them any information and don't fall for anything they say. How they got your information I have no idea, maybe you applied for a credit card or payday loan. In any case they are trying to rob you and you need to report these people so they can have charges held against them. Good luck.

Representative claims that I owe for a payday loan and they have all my personal info.  They state that I am going to be arrested if I do not pay.  I asked for this to be in writing and they said they could not do this.  Eventually told me to shut up and hung up the phone.

I really thought I had heard the end of these scam artists when I asked for their law license. I asked them to please arrest me so I could meet them in a court of law as I was going to counter sue for harrassment and stalking. They have called me numerous times both at work and home. I really am considering getting my phone number changed but I so don't want to. I have screamed into the phone at them. Read legal statements etc. I am going to follow the advice of LAMET and do all that the post says regarding filing complaints. These people even accused staff where I work of being prostitutes.
