received call from this number and did not answer. called back to actual PayPal customer service and they verified that this was a legitimate PayPal phone call.

This number appears on my caller ID many times in the past week. I never pick up when I see it on caller ID. There is a recording left on my machine which says my name and says "We have interesting news for you concerning your Paypal account.........please call 866-648-5874." I haven't returned the call as Paypal paid money out of my account to a scammer that I told them I had never bought anything from. They told me they still had to pay and went into my checking account and took out seperate charges of $72.+ $32, $84, and on and on. Finally closed my bank account and now they tell me I owe them hundreds of dollars. What BS! I made out fraud reports and unauthorized transaction reports through Paypal when this all started a month ago and have received not word One from them. And, like someone else here said, the transactions have disappeared from my Paypal account. NEVER AGAIN for Paypal. I am truly disappointed in them. I had been using them faithfully for 9 years and they know I always pay my account promptly when I do buy something. But they have made me feel that I am a thief, rather than helping me find out who is taking my money and helping me get it back.

This may be a legitimate paypal phone number BUT it is also being used by crooks to commit theft and not only by calling your home, they are also using it to make charges on your credit cards.  Just yesterday (6-17-09) I happen to check a balance on one of my credit cards.  I do have a credit card associated with my paypal account, but the card I happen to be "checking" is not the one associated with it.  WHAT A SHOCK I got when I saw 8 charges totaling $600.00 occuring on 6-15-09!!  I immediately called the credit card company and they immediately closed the account.  The credit card rep. that I spoke with said that she also saw even more charges occuring!!  Thankfully I won't be held accountable for these charges.  I also checked this same credit card today (6-18) and found 2 more charges occuring on 6-16 totaling another $100.00.  

The charges show as either: PAYPAL *CYGNETGAMES 402-935-7733 CA or PAYPAL *BLACKOUT RO 402-935-7733 CA

This is the first time that something like this has ever happened to me, you hear about it but you think that it will never happen to you.  I try to take all of the precautions that your told to take when using your credit cards (this particular credit card by the way was never used to make online purchases, only at retail stores).  I advise folks to check you bank accounts and credit card accounts on a regular basis (I try to check all of mine every few days) if I hadn't who knows how far this would of gone!  And NEVER give out personal information over the phone unless you know who your talking to (you for instance initiated the call).  Good Luck everyone and keep checking those accounts.

I didn't get a call but there was a $73.51 charge from this number on my bank account.  It says that it is Paypal inc. and gives the phone number of 402-935-7733 which I checked and that is a Nebraska number.  Why is that when they are located in San Jose, CA.?  I calling Paypal's 888 number tomorrow and asking what is going on because this charge is NOT listed on my paypal account.

I also forgot that this transaction was posted a day ahead.  It was the 22nd and it posted as the 23rd at 1pm my time.

Paypal is located in San Jose, California.. Not Nebraska.  Sounds like your working for them.

I did not receive a call, but this number did appear on my bank statement from a Paypal payment to an overseas seller.  Being concerned I called the Paypal number provided in this blog.  They verified that it is valid and is used by foreign sellers.  They provided me personal information that confirmed that I was talking to paypal and they new of the transaction.  I believe it to be valid and hope that my purchase will arrive soon.

Hey Jeff, Just purchased something online and got the same number on my account. Just curious if your package ever arrived?

This number showed up on my USAA cc account statement.  I never use this card and shredded it the day I got it in the mail.  This card was for a balance transfer that I was paying off online. I never made a transaction with this card or associated it with Paypal or Ebay.  I use The real paypal online who will not call you on Ebay with no problems.  This number was associated with the name TOYROCKET 6268151115 CA on my statement.

Didn't get a phone call but got a transaction on my cc that reads like this:
"July 07, 2009 PAYPAL *JOHANNHEYSS 402-935-7733 CA   Professional Services  $199.00 "

Nothing on my paypal account and I did not make this charge.  I am very careful with my numbers online and shred everything at home.  I have notified paypal (although since I don't even have this transaction on my paypal account I don't know what they can do) and also notified my cc and disputed that charge.

Anyone ever find out what's going on with these illegitimate purchases?

It couldn't have been from the real PayPal because the call came in on my Company Cell Phone and they don't even have that phone number in my information.  I do not give out my Company Cell for personal buisness that is what my home phone and personal cell is for, my son doesn't even have my Buisness Cell Number.  It isn't on my Buisness Cards because I got the phone after the cards.

I do not think they are legit and that they are spoofing the Caller ID to a number that is good but if you called it you would find that no one Pay Pal can find nothing in thier records to indicate that someone from Pay Pal called you.  

I have dealt with Pay Pal for many years and they have never called me unless they were returning my phone call.  They don't call to confirm that you placed an order.

This HAS to be a scam. My grandmother recieved a call from the number with the caller is saying "paypal inc".

How do I know it's a scam? My grandparents have not and will not ever use any form of payment via the computer. They have no paypal account. So how can anyone be calling to talk about an account that does not exsist?

My account was charged two transactions from this phone number

This person is a thief!  They made an unauthorized withdrawal from my PayPal account.  Paypal was even suspicious and reversed the charge.  Be on the lookout for anyone using this number, including Matthew Gossett and/or wheybichen@aol.com.

Just noticed that $17.00 was removed from my bank account - listed as PayPal. I don't have a PayPal account. Decided to look up the phone number that came through the purchase and here I am. Someone is bilking people out of their money with this scam. Now to the bank to get it fixed.

Just found out my wife wrote a $17.00 check and the check was cashed into someone's PayPal account. It's legit.
