Rec'd my first call from this number which is identified on Caller ID as Atlantic Credit.  When the call went to voice mail, they hung up.  (I am completely debt-free so there is no legitimate reason for them to call me.)

A debt collector. Couldn't have been more helpful. Willing to help you pay off your account with terms that you can manage. Also, no interest. The gentleman was kind, understanding and professional.

Wow that is about as believable as one of the Aesop's fables.  So let me get this straight, you knew who called you?  But you looked up the number anyway?  Because you figured you had nothing better to do than to come here and spout lies?  Amazing. but that is OK, because thanks to you this bunch of criminals is no on our radar.  I hope you aren't going to accept that small pittance your boss is paying you for that lame shill post.

Gee, thanks for letting us know that "Denise". I see that you forgot to mention that you received the required notice of validation by mail before paying this "nice gentleman", so I'll remind everyone of the routine.
Before paying ANY debt collector a dime, DEMAND a notice of validation BY MAIL. Not by E-mail. Not by Fax. As per federal regulation under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA).
Before paying ANY debt collector a dime, check on the Statutes of Limitations regarding debts in your state. They vary & by making a payment on a time-barred debt you will re-validate it, making the debt legitimate to pursue in court. Meaning that a bottom-feeding attorney can sue you for it! Which is, of course, exactly what a lot of Junk Debt Buyers (JDBs) are aiming for. NEVER make a payment on an old debt before checking on the Statutes of Limitations regarding debts in your state first! Your credit has already been impacted. Making a payment to a JDB & then being sued for what was previously a time-barred debt is NOT going to help your credit history!
    Be Safe. Be Aware.

    Some Tips:
    *Keep all messages
*Take a picture of your Caller ID
*Keep any and all conversations recorded to your states recording laws, some require they be told, others do not. This can be transferred to a recording device.
*Keep a notebook handy for writing time, date, who you spoke with and what the conversation detailed.
*Check your SOL for your state as well.
*Attorneys need to be licensed as a DC to collect, all DC's must be licensed in their state as well as yours if different.

This company has been ignoring the FDCPA for years.  This news story form 2004 outlines some shocking violations, such as

    Quote:
call a debtor's neighbor to ask where they were. Learning that the person was shopping at a nearby Wal-Mart, the collector called the store and had the person paged over the loudspeaker to the front desk to talk to them about a debt, he said.

    GC SERVICES

Please note:  Regarding the collection of student loans, the collection agency wants to convince you that you need to pay $200 or more per month.  The reason is simple-they make a ton more money that way.  If they get you to pay that they make 16% of the TOTAL loan amount.  If you pay less they only get 16% of what you pay every month.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Wondering whose calling me now replies to bubbasouth
Most collectors do not work on commission. They work on a bonus structure where if they do not make bonus, although they have a base pay, they can be fired. That is their main motivation for using illegal tactics to get you to pay. Many collectors today do not feel that they will get caught, and are not properly trained. So more goes into than just "commission" pay.

This number has called both me and my daughter repeated times and have also blocked their number so it shows up unknown. They called my daughter like 6 times this morning starting at 8 or before. I tried to call them back but no one is in the office. God help them when I get a hold of someone.

This is a scam! I would suggest you do some investigating before you give them any money. It could be money that you owed many years ago that is off your record anyway, These people are usually the last attempt to collect and will say anything, even threaten you to get what they want. Beware of anyone calling from this number!!

Like my dad used to always tell me, what the hell are they going to do, sue you for money you don't have? I like to [***] with debt collectors as much as I can. I actually just missed a call from this number and am excited to call them back to mess with them. They are more than welcome to call me back. I hope they do. In fact, I hope they like listening to maybe the Disney channel or something boring cause I'm going to answer the phone and set it by the tv speaker.
