If you are targeted by these criminals, be sure to report them to all the following federal and state law enforcement agencies (most of which you can do online or over the phone):
1. The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.
2. Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement or lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, be sure to include that information in your report.
3. File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone. Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.
4. File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.wvago.gov
5. File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)
By the way, here's just a small sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern time and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:

Scam alert: Bogus debt collectors
By Leslie McFadden • Bankrate.com
Monday, Aug. 3
Posted 2 p.m.
Bankrate reporter Leslie McFadden contributed this entry.
This scam isn't technically about credit cards, but it is scary enough to post a warning. The Better Business Bureau issued an alert today saying consumers across the country are getting phone calls from bogus debt collectors claiming default on a payday loan. Of course, the consumer needs to pay a large fee to avoid arrest -- as much as $1,000.
The caller poses as a lawyer, and may threaten extradition to face trial if the consumer doesn't pay up immediately.
What makes these calls alarming -- and perhaps convincing -- is that the perpetrators reference the consumer's personal information, such as the person's Social Security number, driver's license number, previous bank account numbers, home address -- even personal references.
"The amount of information they have is really troubling," says BBB spokeswoman Alison Southwick. She adds that the amount of data points to a possible security breach.
Spread the word to your friends and family: Don't give out personal or financial information to an unknown caller. Scammers can spoof Caller ID to display different numbers, so trust your instincts over technology.
The BBB offers these tips:
• Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation which substantiates the debt.
• Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the phone until you have confirmed the legitimacy of the call.
• File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission online if the caller is abusive, uses threats or otherwise violates federal telemarketing laws or the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
• File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau online if you believe a debt collector is trying to scam you. - DTTThis is the real deal. They called me just a few minutes agao. Scared me! I hung up on him and he called again. Before he called back, I typed in the phone number on Google. I answered the phone, told him what I was currently reading on the Internet, and he hung up VERY QUICKLY!
- Caller: Financial Claims of Investigation Dept of NYC
- Julie replies to SandyI received 2 phone calls/messages on my cellphone from the same person, saying his name was Officer James Hardy. He said he had my information and he needed more from me or I was going to be arrested this morning. I was not arrested this morning. I'm glad I googled the number to find out it was a scam. I will be reporting this to the right people!
- SmileyI did the same thing. Do not let these people scare you. I received a call as well by the name of Officer John Smith, I was laughing at him when I told him that I know that this is a scam and then he proceeded to tell me to "GO TO HELL"!!!! I really cracked up laughing and he became very angry. I told him that this is a scam and he told me that he can call me as often as he would like. I laughed even harder and he still proceeded to tell me to "GO TO HELL" I told him that the blood of Jesus is against you and no devil is hell will prevail. he hung up quickly. I still laughed.

- masmithThese people are horrible.. They call my job all day and have said awful things to my coworkers.. told me he was going to come to my house tonight for a [***]. If I didn't pay they would come lock me up tonight.. I wish there was a way to stop these guys from calling

- sandra rodruiguezthat phony bastered called me to and scared the crap out of me...,got me sooooo pissed off somebody throw him in jail.
- Antione replies to SandyYeah that's some B.S I got my attorney on the azz
- NateGot one a couple months ago and told them I could prove in court they were lying. They called today with that FCT bull! I hung up and they called back left a voicemail saying they would send someone to my house to rape me and throw me in the back of a car then I would be behind bars for a month... WTF!?!? And no one with that thick of an Indian accent is named "Ricky Johnson" pffft LOL
- geoaquaThe scammer called three times today threatening to kill my wife and me next. The day before it was just a simple scam on my wife's work and cell phone. Two hours and your going to prison......Officer John Smith...ya'..right. This person called my cell phone three times today threatening to rape my wife and kill her after then he was going to sodamize me, and kill me afterwards and, dismember my body. Okay, had the local police department come to the house tonight and fill out a full report. Got to be pre-cautious. Advice to all, just call the number back and tell them "This is Captain Robert Miller of the St. Louis County Police Department and I would like to talk to you for a moment". This simple call will result in the scammer hanging up and pulling out of the city the police department said they represent. Try it, it works.
Don't back down, stand your ground and spread the word, call the police, call the Attorney General of New York. These calls originate from Nigeria to a United States based phone number, so keep this in mind. Do not give any information. Hang up, call the police.- Caller: Officer John Smith, New York County Courts
- Call type: Debt collector
- Lisa replies to SandySandy,
I received the same phone call from this number as well 6x and it's getting annoying soo maybe we need too all report this-SCAMMERS! People who come too America that can't even speak our language and then try and rip us off!!! - WhitI am a police officer and had this number reported to me by a citizen as threatening and harassing. When I called and identified myself I got a lot of nasty comments form somebody that sounded like the guy off of Short Circuit. I then began calling back over and over again and each time he would yell profanities at me and even play music. He finally told me not to call back so I told him that now I was harassing him and that he should make a report to his local police and have them call me, I have not heard anything yet but everytime I think about it I call from my office line.
- Michael TurnerThis idiots are scammers and trying to collect money.
- Call type: Prank
- Jason Smithone funny guy with thick indian accent called me and told his name is ricky pointing and he is from financial crime investigation. he dont even know that it is x australian captain name how funny!!!!!!!!!!

- Ritche BerdalI received a call from 646-657-3057, his name was officer bob conner, he connected me with his partner in florida number 786-648-2270, Officer Allen Tyler...both with indian accents. These guys got very rude and threatening after I told them I was coordinating with the FBI and FCC. They said police officers will be at my place of residence in 30 mins waiting to arrest me.
- Caller: Federal Investigation Beureu
- Call type: Debt collector
- Roquel ReidReceived a call from this number and was shaken because they called about my son who is deployed and I couldn't understand them. I first thought they were calling with some news about him, scary and not alright for these companies to prey upon people like this. The caller identified himself as Officer Bob Cooper and the company name was very incoherent, then I asked him a few questions and he got nervous and hung up on me.
- Caller: Financial Claims Investigations Svs
- Call type: Debt collector
- Mrs. HouseA woman called me from +1 (646) 457-4289 after receiving a call from a recording machine answering "Good bye" from another phone number +1 (210) 280-8487. Just after the first call I looked for information about that telephone number and I found that it is a telephone number used to scammed people with the 'Windows error sent from your computer' tale. They tell you that they are calling from the Windows company, because your computer has been sending error messages and they need to assist you. The same people call from both numbers. They have a foreign accent. I received a call from a woman, but most of the complaints that I read explains that the voice of the person who makes those calls comes from a man with an Indian or Pakistan accent. I start asking questions to the woman, but she figured it out, that I was investigating her, and hang up.
- Caller: Faking it comes from Windows Co.
