This number is being hi-jacked.  It is being used by the same people that cal and say they are from Windows and they are getting a signal that you are sending out viruses...  Just be careful you're not being scammed!

The reason they know your name is that Dell has this on their public website.

My caller ID shows "Dell 1-800-624-9896" THIEVES, THIEVES & MORE THIEVES is my quote without the little". These CSMF's can SMA. Apparently savvy people can put anything they want to show up in your phone's caller ID. I've turned cynic in my slightly older salty days. I truly believe ANY computer can be hacked one way or another. These thieves pretending to be from Dell actually had my Service Tag Number for my Dell computer. Dell was hacked & is pretending they aren't liable. The service tag number allows them or anyone to access my personal & system information. I was having computer problems, I did have a Dell computer & they had my service tag number so I let them access my computer remotely. The rest is history, the predditors really come out of the woodwork when you turn sixty. Hope you're smarter than I.

I received a call from this number: 800/624-9896.  I could not understand the girl due to a very thick accent.  Asked her to repeat who she's calling for three times and still couldn't understand.  I said so and hung up.

I just received a call from this number and spoke to a James Brown, a man w/ an Indian accent on a poor connection phone line, who told me that my Dell computer had been downloading malicious stuff.  I hung up.  After some investigation, I found this item:
Hinsdale (Illinois) Police Department reported crimes through June 9:
Someone claiming to be a representative from Dell Computers gained remote access to a victim’s computer, according to Hinsdale police. The victim reported none of her accounts had been tampered with.

I had a call from this number that was not actually Dell.  The male caller said he was from Dell and that I had malicious files being downloaded onto my computer and that he wanted to help me remove them from my computer.  I asked for a reference number and that I would call back, and he hung up.
I called Dell, and they said that this person had arranged for the Dell number to show up on caller ID, but that he was not actually from Dell.  And that you should never allow anyone who calls you to work on your computer.  Dell or Microsoft will never call you!!

Answered call and caller (Indian) said he was from Dell tech support. He said that they had an alert that we had a serious virus and wanted access to our computer to take care of it. We've dealt with Dell quite a bit so it seemed legit at first but then he needed to share our computer through a different Web site which Dell doesn't need to do. I called Dell and they had no record of any call being made in reference to my service tag number.  THIS IS A DELL NUMBER BUT SOMEONE IS HIJACKING IT. I have reported it to the Federal Commission. I would suggest having any caller from this number send an email from Dell verifying legitimacy before allowing anyone to access your computer.

I have received numerous calls, and like several others here, the caller would simply hang up. This time, the caller stated that he had info that my computer was downloading a virus, and he wanted to fix it for me. Instructed me to use the Windows key+r (opens "run" command on desktop) to run a couple of files. When I asked what was the name of the file, he did some fast thinking and said error.  Then instructed me (sort of forcefully, and threatening by saying, well if you want to continue to download the virus, then simply hang up).  The caller knew my name and the TAG number, and year purchased of my Dell notebook.  When I asked him to send me an email, he said they had, and I had not responded, hence the call.   Caller had a foreign accent, seemingly from India.  You could hear a bunch of people in the background like it was a call center. I asked for a telephone number to call and verify, he said that I probably would have to wait about 45 minutes. When I said that would be okay, gave me the number 888-689-7819.  When I dialed that number a recording came on stating: ...this phone is temporarily unavailable. can't complete your call.

Got three calls today, knew my name and Dell computer number.  Said I had malicious files being downloaded and he could fix them.  I told him to send me an email and I might call him back, but I wasn't going to tell him my email.  Never got that email....

These folks are tricky, sucks we have to deal with this crap.

They say they are Dell and calling about my windows XP...dead give away they don't know what they are talking about!  Scam alert.  Why would Dell take th etime to talk to me about something I had a decade ago?   One bogus call of similar nature tried to get me to download a program.  I googled it and up popped lots of scam warnings.  I told the person on  the phone that...but they kept trying ot get me to download.  I hung up.   I wonder if the call-center workers that are calling on these scams know that they are scams...or are just trying to make money on commission and don't know or care that they are causing us harm?

Called using Dell's Customer service # which is correct above.  Dell is aware but does not tell people that people have hacked the number and have hack Dell customer service information.   caller Will give you personal  info on your computer and you and ask to take it over your computer to "fix" viruses that have damaged your computer. Once connected will install hacking software and key strokers to your system.  Very bad people be aware.
