- Almost stung againThis is the second time around for me. This time I did not take the bait. The first time, I responded to an email and I had to change all of my business accounts. I know better than to get scammed a second time. It was very convincing, but the voice is not common to Wells Fargo. They even say "this is not a marketing call", so that was a red flag for me. Whenever they deny the illegal activity, they are just taunting you. Don't fall for it.

- 2busy2| 2 repliesThis is Wells Fargo Fraud Protection number -- Personnaly I appreciate the fact that they checked with me when I made a large purchase by phone out of state for my daughter.
I'll take this kind of call any day. There are way too many scam artists out there - Thanks Wells Fargo
I do hate their telemarketing calls though - I block those- Caller: Wells Fargo Fraud Protection
- PaulNo, this is not a legitimate number - just confirmed with the Wells Fargo department that this is a known scam. I find it rather curious however that this only happened *after* a purchase this morning to get a Skype number - I would hope they have not been hacked in some way..
- Ed| 1 replyThis is not a scam. If it was a scam how would the scanners know your recent transaction history?
- TamiFraud/Scam - This number called & left a message saying they were WF fraud dept. I immediately called Well's Fargo's customer service number and they checked all of our accounts. There was no record of them calling and no notes on our accounts giving them reason to call. Was advised by WF Customer Service Agent that it was in fact a fraudulent call and they are aware that their customers are receiving these. She advised to do exactly as I did and always call their direct customer service number without responding to this number.
- Jen| 1 replyThis is from Wells Fargo's fraud department. Seems to be flagged on international purchases.
- Caller: Wells Fargo
- Anne E.| 8 repliesIt is Wells Fargo Fraud Detection. I called the number back after reading the posts here. When you listen to the whole message they list your last 5 transactions and you have the option to speak to a live person if you don't recognize any of the transactions. They caught a $39.95 charge made from the UK to my card yesterday. You do not have to give out any information about your account, it is already in their system. If they had not caught the charge, I would most likely have missed it (what the crooks are counting on).

- Anne E replies to Anne E.| 7 repliesI went to my WF branch shortly after my post to pick up a temporary debit card and to double check on the possibility of the call being a fraud/scam. It is not a scam. The CS rep at the bank called their fraud dept. and I was able to talk to someone in the fraud department who confirmed that the call I received was indeed them. Took care of my banking and got back to work with an easy mind. Wells Fargo Fraud Department rocks!
- anonymous replies to Anne E| 6 repliesTHIS IS A SCAM and Anne E. is a lying scammer shill and I can prove it.
Anne says "I called the number back after reading the posts here ... they list your last 5 transactions ... option to speak to a live person if you don't recognize any of the transactions." If you call the number, you will hear 5 FAKE BOGUS transactions that you will NOT recognize, at which point you are supposed to be frightened that your WF card has been stolen and used fraudulently, panic, and press #X to get a live person (who is really a SCAMMER pretending to be a WF rep) who will then ask you for your WF card number and your account credentials to verify you are indeed who you are. If you comply, you would have given your WF account and credentials to a WF SCAMMER who will steal your money, your identity, whatever.
How do I know this is a scam? When you call up this number, how is WF going to correctly identify you to be able to pull up your 5 transactions? Since Anne says "You do not have to give out any information about your account", your calling number on WF's CallerID is the only thing WF has in hand to identify you when you call up. Knowing full well that phone numbers can be spoofed https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caller_ID_spoofing WF will NEVER release account transactions based on your phone number alone (or on any other publicly-available info like your address) so "You do not have to give out any information about your account" is a BAREFACED LIE designed to lure you (the victim!) to call their fake-WF number.
Don't fall for it. Since you are reading this, you are already on the internet. Need to contact WF? Go to WF's website contact page https://www.wellsfargo.com/help/phone_dir (or google "wells fargo phone directory") and use any of those legit WF numbers on that webpage. Whatever you do, DO NOT give out ANY info to strangers who call you, and if you need to call your bank, NEVER call numbers supplied by strangers but use legit numbers from the back of your bank card, or legit numbers from the bank's website, or legit numbers from your local phone book -- always look for and use a legit number from a trusted source and NEVER from a stranger.
Every this-is-WF post on this thread is a SCAMMER SHILL POST. - anonymous replies to JenThis is not WF Fraud Dept. WF's Fraud number is 866-867-5568 that you can read on their website https://www.wellsfargo.com/help/phone_dir Seems to be you are a scammer shil.
- anonymous replies to EdThe scammers DON'T. You just made up that LIE to get victims to call up this fake-WF number, listen to 7 FAKE BOGUS transactions, panic, and press #X to get a live person who is really a SCAMMER pretending to be a WF rep.
- anonymous replies to 2busy2You're a lying scammer shill. This fake-WF number is not on WF's website contact page https://www.wellsfargo.com/help/phone_dir
- les replies to anonymous| 3 repliesJust called by this number a few min after ordering something online. I called the number back. they did not ask for my account info and only reason i can see that they would is you guys don't have your phone numbers registered with wellsfargo. They had me review my last 5 transactions to my Checking account which it already knew so i'm going to say this is most definitely wellsfargo.
- Steve F| 3 repliesThis is the Wells Fargo number for their automated account verification system. Here is where all the confusion is coming from:
**Important to this discussion: If you have not been called by the Wells Fargo Fraud Investigation depart -- by their automated message: "...Please call this number: 800-704-0855...", then you do not have an ACTIVE fraud incident.
Here’s the sequence of events:
a) When you call this number, the automated system checks its database for the number provided to them by (unblockable) caller-id.
(And yes, there is just such a service from "the phone company” which legitimate businesses can get if they meet all the requirements of a three-page punch-list. Believe me; I've been there when I worked for Amex.)
b) *IF* there is a database entry for an active Fraud Incident linked to that phone number, the automated system goes on to give you the transactions and so on and so on...
c) If that number is not in their "active fraud investigation” database, they assume that you *do* have an active incident *but* you are calling from a different number. (Because, after all, who would call this number without being told to do so, using Wells Fargo's logic.)
d) Assuming that you are calling from work or something, they ask you for the number “where we called you”. If that number matches a database entry, off it goes to tell you your transactions. If the number you entered does not match an active incident report, it assumes that you either can’t type in the numbers correctly or you don’t know the number.
**If you are calling when you haven’t been called, I supposed you could say that the message is telling you to hang up.
e) As a last ditch effort, the system asks you for your account number and if it doesn’t match something, they hang up with pleasantries.
So, those people calling 800-704-0855 to check it out are going to receive a series of prompts that “appear” to be trying to get your account number or something. Please note, the system is asking for your ACCOUNT NUMBER, not your credit card number. An account number is far less useful to a Scammer than a credit card number. In order to use an account number, you need the FRB Routing number which you get off of a check or from the bank, if you prove who you are. I know, I know, before you start complaining, yes, FRB Routing numbers are the same for all the accounts from the same bank (sometime varying by the FRB region you live in) but there are a few major differences between scamming credit card numbers and bank account numbers.
Debit and ACH transactions are extensively tracked and they are guaranteed by the FDIC or the NCUSIF (not Visa or Diner Club) so you are not on the hook for the possible “First $50 “ deal. The FDIC and NCUSIF cover the stolen money 100%. But what’s more important is that, right off the bat, the Scammers are dealing with the FBI and looking at Felony Wire Fraud charges and the Federal Prison System. Basically, scammers don’t steal bank account numbers.- Caller: Wells Fargo
- Steve F replies to Steve FWait a minute... I pasted this in (from an old post of mine) and accidentally submitted it before I could edit it. I called Wells Fargo and for what it's worth, they did several minutes of work while I was on hold and they said that is NOT their number. I wanted to say that at the top of my post but, somehow, I must have hit the button before I could. My apologies to everyone.
- Steve F| 1 replyCrap, just out of curiosity I called again and punched in just a load of crap until the system finally turned me over to a rep. He was indeed a rep as he could very my account from the phone number. He told me that, as others have mentioned before, you can always call the number on the back of the card and if you say something about "fraud" they know where to send you right away.
So... 800-704-0855 IS a valid. If you don't believe me, dial the number and enter a bunch of numbers+# a few times and the system will transfer you to a person.

- Big Boss| 1 replythis is legit #, just got a call from this # telling me there was an attempt to use my card. i told them to cancel my card and send me a new one. couple mins after that i discovered this website. - diverous replies to hypno| 5 repliesNot a scam, it is an automatied phone line for the fraud department at wells fargo.
- anonymous replies to Steve FWow, long post mixing up truth and lies.
a): Numbers that call toll-frees cannot be blocked because the toll-frees are paying for the call and are entitled to record the calling numbers. My local public library identifies me via my home phone number and auto-pulls up my library account when I call up. This is OK for a library (no money at risk) but NOT OK for bank accounts (money at risk).
b): The real WF will never release transaction details based on your calling phone number (or other publicly available data like your address) because calling numbers can be spoofed https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caller_ID_spoofing Victims who call 800-704-0855 may hear 5 FAKE BOGUS transactions, panic that their WF account has been fraudulently used, punch #X to get an operator (who is really a scammer pretending to be a WF rep) and give away their account info to the scammers.
c), d) and e): This is just another way to phish victims. Instead of having victims listen to the 5 FAKE BOGUS transactions, scammer-WF's computer tells victims their phone number is not in their scammer database (though it may well be in the real WF's database) so the fake WF don't know who is calling and has to ask victims for their account info. If victims comply, they will give up their account info to the scammer.
"scammers don’t steal bank account numbers" is a COMPLETE LIE. Steve F. wants us to think it's OK to give up bank account numbers to scammers because our accounts are insured. I'd like to see Steve F. leave his car on the street with the windows rolled down and the key in the ignition because it's insured -- see how STUPID this line of reasoning is? Scammers will empty your account if they have your account number and NOT all banks will refund the money because the loss did not occur from the banks' negligence. You, the victim, voluntarily gave your account number to the scammers so why should your bank give you your money back? Yes, you were tricked into giving it away but that's not the bank's fault. You gave it away, not the bank. You were negligent, not the bank. The truth is some banks refund money to victims and some don't depending on the circumstances. To be safe, victims must always protect their account info and NEVER give it away to strangers especially SCAMMERS.
800-704-0855 is NOT LISTED on WF's website as a legit WF number.
1. If 800-704-0855 calls you, DON'T give away any info.
2. NEVER call 800-704-0855 back.
3. If you need to call WF, use the number on the back of your card or the numbers on WF's website https://www.wellsfargo.com/help/phone_dir - anonymous replies to Steve F"800-704-0855 IS a valid. If you don't believe me, dial the number and enter a bunch of numbers+# a few times and the system will transfer you to a person" is SUPER BAD ADVICE because 800-704-0855 is *NOT* LISTED on WF's website as a legit number and 800-704-0855 may transfer you to a SCAMMER pretending to be a WF rep should you call 800-704-0855. Like all banks, WF tells its customers to call legit WF numbers from TRUSTED SOURCES (back of card, website, phone book) and NEVER FROM UNTRUSTED SOURCES like 800notes. There is NO PROOF that 800-704-0855 is a legit WF number except for allegations from anonymous postings on an anonymous forum like 800notes. Allegations are not proof.
800-704-0855 is NOT LISTED on WF's website as a legit WF number.

It's simple IRRELEVANT whether 800-704-0855 is a valid WF number. There are SEVERAL LEGIT numbers on WF's website so use these and NOT 800-704-0855. Who cares if 800-704-0855 is a legit WF number? Why, SCAMMERS of course, SCAMMERS who want you to call and give away your account info.
