I know this is an old posting, but under the FDCPA a bill collector can not reveal information to anyone but the person who they are trying to reach. That is why the message will tell you not to listen or to hang up. The collection agency is covering their butt in case they reach a wrong person who does listen to the message. Bill collectors who "claim" to be decent, hardworking individuals just doing their jobs will find people with the same last name as yours in your area and hound them with phone calls hoping they will eventually reach the person the are looking for. Research the law and fight back at these people. If you are the wrong person, tell them not to call you again and if they continue to do so, document the calls and sue them. You can win a judgement of $1000 for harassment due to violating the rules of the Fair Debt Collection Protection Act.

Actually the phone company does NOT have the right to DICTATE to you how you handle a phone call you receive.  But then that is NOT what she said.....so perhaps if you read ALL the words, you could respond properly.  However, I strongly suspect it's what the previous commenter said....you probably work for these lowlife companies and want people to not only feel intimidated by you when you call but also when they read your worthless post.

I guess you're not such a *wiz kid* after all if you don't think companies will send out merchandise you didn't order.  It's happened to me and it's happened to my mama.  I will suddenly start getting a magazine I would NEVER read and three months later get a bill for it.  I've received books I never ordered.  I've been charged in my checking account for a set of encyclopedias I would never EVER in a million years order and never received.  I've been billed for CDs from Columbia House I never ordered and never received.  This has all happened over the course of about 15 years.  The most recent was the magazine.

You might want to change your name to something more appropriate....like maybe *uneducated opinion*.

Received call from this number.  Due to abundance of [***] collection agencies calling the wrong number, I don't answer 800 calls anymore, except on Leap Day from 2:15pm to 2:16pm.

Got a call from this # and told them they were mistaken. Before I could ask to be put on no call ist, she hung up on me.  I called back and some [***] answered and asked for my phone #.  I gave her area code & #.  She asked for area code and I gave it t her again, then she asked for the phone # and I told he the area code and # SLOWLY.  She said that I was rude and I was already taken off the list!  I said if you already had my # on a list why did you have me repeat it!  She told me I was very rude and not to call again.  What a RUDE [***] she is and wouldn't give her name.
