I don't have an account or a credit card with Capital One, but someone keeps calling me from this number.  I haven't answered because I didn't know who it was.  They never leave a message.

Capital One tells us to send this phone number in an email to:  abuse@capitalone.com

This IS their number, and apparently they believe someone is using their own phone number to commit fraud!

Secure email I sent to Capital One:
I have had 3 hang-up calls from (800)955-7070 in the past two
days. I understand now, from Googling this number, this is Capital One.

No voicemail message has been left. I don't want any offers by phone.
    Please stop calling. Thank you.

    Response from Capital One:

    Thanks for your recent message.

To see if the phone call you received is valid, please forward the
    complete phone number to abuse@capitalone.com.

If you can’t forward the information, please know that your personal
information remains safe with us. When we identify suspicious e-mails,
text messages, phone numbers, or Web sites, we work with law enforcement
and other agencies to shutdown these fraudulent activity.

Please do not include attachments in your e-mail to abuse@capitalone.com
because they will not be opened.

Thank you for helping us identify and prevent fraud.
    Sincerely,

I keep getting calls from this number and it's really starting to irritate me. I've missed several and just answered on a few minutes ago. No one says anything...and then after about 30 seconds they hang up.

I got a call from this number, too.  It was Capital One telling me that they had local branches and were offering incentives to open a checking account with direct deposit.  The guy was very polite and told me the location of the nearest branch, even going so far as to look it up on Google Maps to tell me the nearest cross streets.

Said they were Capital One and asked for me to verify my birthday.  They called me, so there's no way to be sure it really is them.  Don't provide personal info to anyone on the phone unless you initiated the call to a known verified published phone number.

I've only recently started getting calls from this number, and they started after I started paying my card balance down again...is it just me or is that in the wrong order?? I thought they were supposed to call and bug you for their $$ if you were late, not if you've been paying on time. I've never answered, now I'm really glad.

I was getting calls form this number several times a day for a week. Finally answered. They asked for me by name, I asked who was calling before I would answer. They would not say, then they hung up. This occurred three times now. They call, I answer, they ask if it's me, I ask who is calling first. They refuse to say who they are and only that "it is a financial matter". They keep hanging up when I insist they tell me who they are before I will verify it is the person they are asking for.

Sounds like total scam to me. I have a zero balance with CapitalOne so this has nothing to do with me owing any balance, etc.

I have no accounts with CapitalOne, never have. My cell phone's minutes are precious, so I didn't answer the call; no voicemail, just like everyone else.

If they call again, I'll take up an issue.

I called this number and it did infact say it was Capital One.  I did not give but card number but dialed 0 to get to a rep.  Rep came on to verify it was Capital One, I said OK that's all I wanted to know and hung up.

This number phoned and call ID showed # plus Lost-Stolen Credit.  I answered it.  After a pause, recording came on stating "there is nothing wrong with your account, we are offering an opportunity for you to lower your interest rates".  No mention of ANY specific credit card issuer.  I hung up.  Did not wait for a person or whoever to get on the line.  The Lost-Stolen crap on the ID upsets me...makes you think one of your credit cards has really been stolen!  This is surely a scam.  About a year ago we received numerous robo-calls from many different numbers with a very similar recording about lowering interest rates.  SCAM I say, SCAM.  Don't give them anything.

I have a Capital One credit card, so we have a "business relationship."  Someone called, said that they were from Capital One, and then asked for my birthday to verify the account.  I, of course, refused.  "I can understand why you are reluctant, but Capital One has an important message for you.  Please call the 800 number on the back of your card."

I was bored at work, so I decided I'd call and play along.  Sure enough, the "important message" was simply telemarketing -- balance transfer at low rate or something like that.

That set me off.  I first told her that even though I understood that they may legally call me because I'm a customer, I'm on the federal and state Do Not Call lists for a reason:  I don't want telemarketing calls.

Next, I asked to be placed on their Do Not Call list, which she promptly agree to do.  She then said that it would be several weeks before it was effective.  I then asked why it takes several weeks.  In this day of relational databases and instant communications, it should be instantaneous or perhaps take no more that a day, maybe two.  OK, I can understand that mailing lists are made up in advance, but why should I receive any more calls?

I never got a good answer, so, still bored at work, figured that I'd just continue to make their day a little less enjoyable and asked to speak with a supervisor.  The "supervisor" was really probably the person sitting in the next cubicle, but I still got to vent a little more at her.

If someone tells you that its going to take several weeks place your name on their Do Not Call list, ask why it takes that long.

They just called me a few times out of the blue today.. I finally answered, and after saying "Hello?" twice, I knew something was up.  Someone with an accent answered, asking for my birthdate.  I hung up - anyone calling from a legit company does NOT have a 5-10 second pause after the person answers the phone.  This is a classic telemarketing tactic to call multiple numbers and then put a rep on with whoever answers, hence the delay.  Do not EVER give personal information over the phone unless you can verify that this company is legit.

This website lets you get your name off those mailing lists that keep sending "preapproved" credit card offers and insurance offers in the mail, and keeps those companies from making inquiries on your credit report.  You only have to give your name and address - birthdate and social security numbers are only optional, so if you do it, don't give that info.

Just some helpful info for all of you who care about keeping your identity safe.. I don't think this will stop the calls, but it is very important nonetheless.

I got a call from this number and felt something was wrong. After asking for my card number which I stupidly provided, they asked me for the last 4 of my social and I said I was uncomfortable and wanted to know why I had been called. They couldn't tell me until I had verefied my information. The agent said she could give me her ID number and I said no, that any scam could give me an illegitimate number. I called the number on the back of my card and they said that this 800 number had nothing to do with Capital One.  TOTAL SCAM DO NOT CALL OR GIVE YOUR INFO. I have now had my card number changed.
