I second your motion. The calls are legally fine, but the professional calling company takes a cut of your donation, frequently a very large cut. Give directly to the charities of your choice.

Why do they hang up when you answer? They probably hang up after you pick up because the system used is a predictive dialing system.  Basically it calls three phone numbers for each telemarketer and sometimes if all 3 pick up, it will hang up on one or two of the people, it's what you call "dropped calls".

Although non-profits are exempt from the DNC list, they are NOT exempt from the TCPA.  This law prohibits autodialers calling cell phones for ANY REASON!  If they are calling your cell phone and hanging up, this is against the law, and you can recover significant damages from them.  Up to $1500 per call.  Best of all, the lawsuits can be filed in your local small claims court.  In fact, you can file a lawsuit for each individual call as each one is a separate violation.   The FCC also holds the company hiring them legally responsible for TCPA violations, so you can go after them as well if you really want to.  Just do an internet search for "TCPA cell phone violations", and you will find all sorts of good information on how to proceed.

The only way you are going to be able to stop a company like this is to make it hurt them financially.  Do the research, file a lawsuit, and collect.  They are calling me too, and I will be filing against them on Monday.

They have called every night for the past 2 weeks. No messages have been left. When we answer the phone, they hang up. We have called back right after, and no one answers the phone. I would love to have them stop calling!!!

Just completed their "did we call you" form and asked what it is they do not understand about, "stop calling me and take me off your call list".  I also advised that I have been keeping a log of all their calls for several months and if they call one more time, I will forward that log along with my complaint to their state's BBB, Attorney General, and the FCC.

I don't directly to charities as I've told this "Public Interest" nuisance on several occasions.  They stop for a few weeks and then start again.

I pay for my phone for my convenience, not theirs nor that of any other telemarketer nor politician.

I work for a different fundraising company, and I can tell you that standard practice in the fundraising business is to take a payment upfront, and guarantee a specific return on investment. Fundraising companies never take a "cut" of your donation, if you write a check you make it out to the charity, or if your card is charged it's charged by the charity, and then they do whatever they want with it, which includes spending money on fundraising, all charities spend money on fundraising, weather they do it themselves or hire others to do it for them, and the percentage that they spend on fundraising or development, as it is sometimes called is a matter of public record.  If you send the charity a check directly, without going through a 3rd party fundraising company, the exact same percentage of that donation will go to paying the fundraisers as if you had.  The people calling you are going to get paid the same regardless of if you answer or if you give them money or not. For example, a charity will have a contract with us for 500,000, we sign up 2000 people to give 20 dollars per month, after a year, the original investment is recouped and the average time that people continue to give is 6 years, meaning that the charity makes a 500% return on investment.  Some companies, like ours, will also guarantee a minimum contribution, so if someone drops off before the year it takes to pay for the fundrasing, we will make up the difference, which is why we always strive to sign up only people who are committed and really care about the cause, and not use tactics to force or guilt people to sign up, only to cancel a month later.  These companies are for profit, yes... but charities choose to hire them for a reason, and you should not feel uncomfortable giving through them.

I consult for non-profits and I can tell you that unsolicited telephone calls are the brute force unsophisticated method of fundraising these days.  Also, AS LONG AS the charity insists on the right to solicit independently, direct donations are NOT subject to "ROI fees."  Most of them do that now.

So give directly to the charity of your choice, folks.  If the fundraising telemarketers fail in their mission they'll stop using these antiquated methods of calling unsolicited.  Of course, that will probably never happen because there are too many folks who will accept the intrusion and freely hand over funds to a stranger calling them on the phone... ;(

Some of the posts here are totally accurate - this number "Publisher Interests Communication" called me three times tonight and just hung up.   I dialed *69 to find out who was calling and hanging up.   Yes, I left a message with my number to be taken off their list - but even that seems suspect.  If all their service does is call and hang up, what's the point...

I received a call from this number while I was on another call. My mother just died, and I thought this might be another condolence call. When I checked who had phoned, there was no message and when I tried calling back I was told that the number was 'not in my service area.' I am disgusted to learn that this was from yet another scam center.

This is directly copied from the government's Do Not Call website:

*Reminder:Even if your number is registered, charities, political organizations, and telephone surveyors may continue to call you. Companies with which you do business may also continue to call, unless you have asked them to stop calling you. If you have asked them to stop calling, please keep a record of the date you made the request and include that information in the comment section of any complaint you submit against that company.

Thanks Rossi. I just requested to be removed. For those who do the same, it requires you to submit an email address (don't know why), so I simply told them to stop calling the phone and don't start emailing us now that they have our email address.
