I can guarantee it was the aopa that gave them your number. I am in AOPA too... or was in AOPA. Once I found out that they gave the number out, I killed my membership. Now im going to make about 100 youtube videos denouncing the AOPA. We shall see how they like that.

I too am an AOPA member, and I am VERY unhappy that AOPA has given out my phone number to these dirtbags.  This guarantees that I will never give any money to AOPA again.

These (801) people call my cellphone almost every day.   If they were legit, they'd leave a message.  If I don't answer the phone, they never leave a message.  If I do answer the phone, I get a recording that says something to the effect of "We are sorry we missed you.   We were calling on behalf of AOPA and will call you back later."

AOPA members go here to complain to AOPA about it:

I have Cox cable telephone which has call blocking. I have blocked this number and quite a few others. They get a message that my number is not rec. calls. No ring and no caller ID. I can tell that they called by checking my TV options. Lately they have been attempting to call 2-3 times a day. God bless call block :~)  .......... fred

It is a robo dialer out of control. When we answer it hangs up if there is not a representative free to talk.  Or if we are lucky we get a recording.

Go to web site, look at client list and you will see an organization that you have contributed to.  Contact that org and complain - for me it was MADD and World Wildlife Fund.  They will listen to their clients, not us.

Also go to donotcall.gov and file a complaint.

I called their call center in VA, got a live person who said they would take me off their list.  We will see, but I assure you I won't be answering that number if it calls again.

    telehellraisers
I receive calls from many different telemarketers raising funds on behalf of charities.
They like to refer to themselves as telefundraisers but they are actually telemarketers in sheeps clothing. I spoke with a few of them. They say they are an employee of the charity and technically they are. But when I asked them if they are telemarketers they say yes.
From the information I have found out, since donations to charities are down due to the economic crisis, telemarketers have contacted and contracted with charities to raise funds for them. The charities have nothing to lose. They will get the money from the telemarketrs who do all the work.
The telemarketers have lists of people who have donated to the charity or any charity in the past.
They use their normal telemarketing strategies including repeat calling ( some have been calling me every day, sometimes 4 or 5 times a day for almost one year now), pressure, guilt and oh yes rudeness.
When they do get donations some of them keep up to 90% of the donation and give the 10% to the charity. So it really pays for them to be persistent. They usually give their speech then tell you they have a 10, 20 and 50 dollar card, which would you like?. They don't give you a choice of the amount you want to give, unless it's more than 50.  When i told them that I donate to many charities and money is tight but I can send them a 5 dollar donation, they will not accept it....imagine that, a charity turning down money.
But be careful if you do commit to an amount. If you do not send it in they will call back and demand it from you because you made a pledge. I had one call me and ask where is the 50 dollar pledge I made on such a date. I told them I did make a pledge on that date but it was for 10 dollars and you already cashed the check. They argued with me about it until i gave them the check number and told them i would send them a copy of it. They still were not satisfied and insisted I pay the 50 dollar pledge. They started to get rude and insulting so I hung up and never heard from them again. I even had a charity ask me if I would solicit from my neighbors for them. They would send me solicitation letters and I would sign them and give them to my neighbors. I asked, why don't you do that?
They said that they found if the request came from a neighbor that they were more inclined to donate. I told her not in my neighborhood. They will beat me up if I did that. What a nerve!
Well anyway, be careful of the telefundraisers. Ask if they are a third party, a telemarketer. And ask for the charities website and tell them you will make the donation through the site. But just for fun,ask them to send the soloicitation through the mail to your house. They have some funny reasons why they can't do that. One told me that the IRS has made it illegal coz I would keep the receipt, make no donation and use the receipt for a tax deduction.

You can fill out the form with inaccurate/fake info with the exception of the number you want removed.  That way, you won't get paper mail, email, etc. and you've entered your number to be removed.  I put myself as Iamnot Booboothefoo of 123 Sesame Street, Donotcallsville, PA.  You get the picture.  But I've been calling to request removal, and that seems to be linked to some sort of "keep calling" request line.

Go to their website and on the left hand side in the upper corner is says "Did we call you?" Click that fill out the info and they remove you from the list. I was getting calls everyday sometimes three times a day from them.  As soon as I submitted the form the calls stopped.

They are a legit company, not trying to steal your identity.  They are just rather annoying with all the unsolicited phone calls.  I am not even sure how they got my number?  I am unknown in the directory and I NEVER give my number out.

Oh, now it all makes sense. My AOPA membership expires in about 30 days and I have been getting these calls everyday but have been up flying and they don't leave a message. Geeez, I guess between the notices in the mail, emails and now telephone calls, they just spent my renewal amount.

You can't bother to answer a phone with no one on the other end....but you're all gung ho to file a lawsuit...ok....These people suck either way but really you'd rather collect evidence, contact a lawyer, go to meetings, go to court or arbitration and pay out of your own pocket instead of answering a phone with no one there? Crazy concept - get caller id first!

i've been tracking PIC calls to my number for months. they call every day, from a variety of numbers, some days they call twice, three times, then it's radio silence for a week.
once in a while, they'll leave a message, it's been a girls voice - she sounds way too proud of herself to be a call center drone.  I have been working with computers a little while, but never been in a house with a landline before, so these calls from PIC piqued my interest . . .

    2 months later . . . here's "My Little Research Dump."

i've looked over their website, it's just a template - there is no credibility or history to the dates they list for the length of their operation.  They claim to have been in business since 1979, yet their website was first registered in 1999.

Essentially, PIC totally lacks any consistency that would indicate it is actually a telemarketing outfit:

    - They have no history.
    - No google hits outside of their site or this forum
    - Their site is a template with no real brand or company body
    - They have no point of contact listed under a WHOIS lookup.
    - PIC calls from a variety of local numbers with a variety of area codes, never a 1-800 number.

This is inconsistent with any company that's claimed to be in business since 1979.
Totally lacking a business model, technology not withstanding, alleged Pub Int Co would be out of business in under 2 years.

    - PIC is probably grey market in credibility, but I would lean towards black market.
    - Some calls are computer driven - drone dialers that are feeling for when you pick up.
    - They are solicit for CC#s by means of naming random charities.
    - There is no consistency in the affiliation with the charities they list.

So … As a consumer, Here are your options regarding these phone calls:

    A. Pick up the phone to their botnet-driven dialer and when it hangs up, you can be sure that you've been added to a chart designating the best time for a human to call you.  These lists are $$$.

    B. Give your credit card number to a human, and you can be sure that you are funding the tweak required by this expenditure to further innovate new exciting ways to collect and exploit your Personal Identity Info.

    C. Put your name and info on their website, and you've just verified your info to these [***], bravo, you just put yourself on a VIP list worth even more $$$ than the first.

I wish I had solutions regarding effective reporting, but my role is to watch and report symptoms for the commonwealth.

Keep posting to these boards, I dig that this sort of community exists for people like me to vent for greater good: THE RIGHT TO BE LEFT ALONE! Thanks for the bits.

That IS a cold call. Having a list does not change that--unless it specifically a list of people who have expressed interest (then it is a warm call). These lists are usually purchased lists of people they think are likely candidates to say yes, but if the call is the first contact with the person, it is a cold call.
