- Alfalfa replies to Shelly ManssonPRA does not maintain or monitor this website. You need to send them a cease communication letter VIA certified mail with return receipt requested demanding they stop calling. If they refuse, you can take them to court and sue them for $1,000 per violation.
- Esser1976They call three to four times a day. Even with the comments of other people on this site I'm bankrupt and was discharged from all my debt so they should not be harassing me... though I don't answer the phone.

- kristyThey will keep calling they stick numbers in a robo center which delegates calls out of the company the numbers that are shown on caller ids are private at home debt collectors so your not sure who your chatting to.I reported over a 100 numbers to the do not call list they are telling me after a month the company recycles their numbers and gets new ones . The scam about this is that they three credit beaus do not up date their information you as the consumer have to check and remove what is incorrect on your report. These companies feed off of old accounts thinking they are legit because of the statue of libations. Normally it is 7 years to date and anything after that is fair game they can check and mark negative remarks up to 14 to 20 years . The credit card companies hire people like this to try to reclaim old accounts. Capital one and HSBC, Citibank and banking companies like Wood forest they like to try to reclaim old accounts they think they can make money off of charge offs or bank bankruptcies chapter 13 and 7. Old debts like financial or medical can damage credit up to a max of 20 years if it is a revolving account meaning it was switching hands of debt collectors for several years older accounts many companies are asking for you to pay but no judgement will be placed meaning if you want to settle your account ,OK if not then it may be a revolving account. In many states the laws of credit protection act like in the state of Pa can cause a collection company to stop collections after 7 years but they still can place bad remarks on your credit up to 20 years they can not do a judgement after the statue of limitations . Normally that is wage garnishments but normally they will just damage credit reports meaning higher then normal premiums for loans or mortgages and higher then prices on leased merchandise like cars and furniture. Doctors and billing companies for utilities like using these kinds of companies because they ruin credit of the consumer . No letter will stop these people you have to go to the websites of the credit reporting agencies your selves and contact them to remove these blemishes off credit reports. I had letters from this company saying they will work out a deal meaning a settlement do not take it. It is a scam for you to hand over banking information so they can block hold freeze on accounts that is where they block the account of outside usage and rank up the money with lump sums of money it is their form of freezing accounts like they are the law. I told Portfolio recovery they are not the IRS and can not freeze anything i went to the bank and filed a form and a complaint against this creditor the bank unfroze my account charged portfolio recovery over a thousand dollars in legal fees and fines . The bank went ahead and blocked all correspondence of portfolio recovery and its traces to the account. NEVER GIVE OUT CHECKING OR CREDIT CARD INFORMATION TO THIS COMPANY THEY WILL FREEZE ACCOUNTS. If they pressure you into giving any kind of statement tell them i will speak about this to my lawyer they quickly hang up the phone and pause for several weeks of calling you back. Or another way is this tell them you have no accounts that will allow you to pay bills online or other wise on the phone then explain that you will speak to your lawyer about the harassing calls day and night that explanation will cause this company to hang up NEVER GO INTO DETAIL YOUR BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY THEY USE IT AGAINST YOUR WILL. THEY WILL FIND AWAY TO RUIN YOUR CREDIT..ALWAYS REPORT TO THE DO NOT CALL REGISTRY AND TO THE FTC THE TELEPHONE NUMBERS ....

- AKTI can ignore them as often as they call. Will save this latest number in my scumbag contacts folder which is set on a silent ringtone. This debt is beyond the statute of limitations. They can call, but can no longer sue. Too bad and may Karma bite them in the folio!

- edjump replies to Fed upLOL, I can too!!! Every time they call us their representative will start right off by telling me how they are calling to "help" me!!! And I immediately ask them how in the world do they think they can help me when ALL of their representatives are too stupid and lazy to even dial a phone number without the use of a computer??? LOL, they generally hang up pretty quickly at that point!!!
- edjump replies to Sandy in North FloridaSandy, something for you to remember too, EVERY bill has a STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS!!!
Check out what the Federal Trade Commission says;
"When is an old debt too old for a collector to sue?"
Typically, state law determines how long the statute of limitations lasts. Usually, the clock starts ticking when you fail to make a payment; when it stops depends on two things: the type of debt and the law that applies either in the state where you live or the state specified in your credit contract.

Another GREAT source of info is at;

"The Statute of Limitations & Debt Collection"
The statute of limitations is the time period set by law in which someone can sue you. In the debt collection context, a creditor or bill collector cannot sue you for payment of a debt after the applicable statute of limitations period has run. It's important to understand what the statute of limitations is in your state and for various types of debts, how you might unwittingly restart the time period to sue, and what you can do if a collector or creditor tries to sue you after the statute has run.
Good luck, I hope this helps you. - Charlie replies to A girlI got a second phone line. The old one i kept but disconnected it from the phone so it will ring endlessly but I don't hear it.
The second one I have connected to a fax. When I get a call if I know who it is, I answer, if not it goes straight to fax! - CharlieEveryone get robocaller software...it's free...juts google it, then set it up to dial al these numbers simultaneously! Over and over non stop, set it on automatic...every one of their numbers will be useless.

- MejForget this one even exists, Portfolio will call all day and all night long, the debts are past due and they know it, when they do not get an answer they will finally send a piece of paper stating they want to help solve your debt. Don't fall for it, look at the bottom of the paper and you will see the following message, it states because the debt is too old and is out of the Statue of Limitations they cannot sue you. This is something new that I have never noticed being on the form before.
This company is a worthless bottom feeding company that is hoping and praying that one of their calls or notices finally wear you down and you answer and they get you to agree to making a payment, do not fall for this. Somebody was kind enough to put together all of the phone numbers that they use put the list to good use do not answer the phone no matter how annoying it is let's just make them sign up 192 more phone numbers.
As for my phone it can keep on ringing if a company does not have the decency to identify themselves I don't answer it and yes when it finally shows up as Portfolio I definitely don't answer it because my particular situation goes back to the year 2000 and this debt has been sold from one company to another. These companies are all bottom feeders what was once a $200 debt is now over $1500 because these bottom feeders all decided they needed interest. All I have to say is keep on calling and keep on selling it to somebody else because nobody's home and in the year 2050 some fool somewhere will probably still be trying to collect this debt and I will be long gone.- Call type: Debt collector

- Stephanie replies to TOBYVery well said. They indeed did file suit against me for a balance of $2900. Got laid off three times in four years and we paid our rent, utilities and food only just to survive. I did respond to their suit. Trial is later this year. They then sent me a huge packet with a copy of my agreement with Capital One, along with their written testimony, as they have no intention of sending someone to court. I'm in Los Angeles, and the attorney's office is in San Jose, CA. I'd like to point out that it appears they were facing sanctions from the judge as they said they couldn't serve me. Because the judge is aware of their predatory behavior, they were forced to formally serve me with the papers. Their original intention was to push it through without my ability to respond within the time allotted by law, thereby gaining a judgement against me. It cost me $400 to file my answer, but the clerk whispered to me "this isn't going anywhere, so relax". The attorney's office, for informational purposes, is Hunt & Henriques. I notice their office number on my caller ID now and then, and I usually let it go to voice mail, they never leave a message, but I have picked up a few times just to hear them try to mess with me, but when I do answer they simply hang up. It's a game for them, and one that I'm willing to play. Keep in mind, it costs more for them to file the suits. On a separate note, I had another Capital One account that also suffered during unemployment with a balance under $1000 and they sent a letter clearly stating that they would not file suit, but they will keep attempting to collect on the debt.
- KO| 1 replyJust received a call from the number. Figures it's PRA. Idiots.
Reading through the comments, correct me if I'm wrong, but as much as we'd love to let the SOL run on some of these (I'm another one severely affected by the Great Recession), I believe that when the debt is sold to yet another debt collector, it actually gives the SOL date a new date. So once PRA bought the debt from Capital One or whomever held it prior, it technically becomes a "new" debt effective that day. This is why they have the ability to continue to harass good folks. On a side note, I received a notice from a company that they were going to "forgive" one of my debts, and they sent a 1099 just in time for my taxes. While it's "nice" to have one less debt hanging over my head, I had to declare it as "income", but the funny part is the notice basically said they're going to continue to post negative stuff on my credit report. After three years of unemployment, my once decent credit is complete crap. it pains me to think about it. - george replies to CornholioOh add another number
