My number has only been given to family yet these people keep calling more than once a day. They let phone ring for 5 minutes. I thought their was a law that they couldn't call more than once a day? These people are out of control and need to be stopped.

A new scam (at least to me) I received a yellow/brown postcard in the mail telling me that an unsuccessful attempt was made to deliver a package to my home. Of course, it was made to put you in mind of a UPS notification; however, there was no UPS logo anywhere on the postcard.  It stated that I should call an 888 number, with no reference made to a shipping order.  In my past experience with UPS they usually try at least 2 times to deliver your order and they leave their notification note on the door, not mailed to you.  I knew it could only be my "friends" at Portfolio Recovery.

False Identity.  We were given this phone no. from our service provider but these dept collectors continuously calls and ask for the previous owner of this phone no.  They call us liars and insist we are the owners of this debt.  They continue to harass and threaten us if we don't pay these individual bills.

Send them a cease and desist letter, telling them they may not call your phone number any longer. Send it to them by certified mail. Then if they keep on pestering you, you can sue the vermin.

Portfolio Recovery: they are not true debt collectors... I had no idea until I saw this from Lazarus on another tell-all site about these crooks:
Technically they aren't a debt collection company. They are Junk Debt Buyers. They buy worthless debts after the credit companies charge them off. Then, they proceed to harass the debtors while pretending to be authorized agents of the original creditor (occasionally they even file lawsuits hoping for a judgement of default).
    .
When they call, always try to get the person's name, then, simply tell them you have never heard of the person they are looking for, and, ask them to remove your number from their computer and cease all calls. If the person makes any threats, make sure to tell them that, 1) you have already researched their number and you know they are PRA; and, 2) you are going to report them to FTC for violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. If the person STILL insists on making threats, simply hang up. Usually the mere mention of the FDCPA is enough to make them stop calling.

BTW, forgot to mention that this particular number calls me and my home up to 9 times a day from 9a-7p... FYI, that's unacceptable and not allowed by law for that amount of phone calls.

This place is unreal.  They call a place of business for COLLEEN SOMERS.  For 2 years I told them that she doesn't work here, and has never worked her.  They keep calling back for her.  Finally, about 6 months ago, I started playing along w/them.  I always say I am Colleen.  I agree that I owe the money and have no intention of paying.  They try to offer a payment plan, I decline and say No Thanks, I don't want to pay that bill.  This one lady said that I had no right to charge up a CC w/no intention of paying it.  I laughed and said Well then Sue me!  She said she was going to.  LOL!!  She can sue Colleen Somers all she wants.  Hey Colleen, if you're out there, thanks a lot for using this phone number so we get stuck w/all your debt collectors!!!

A lot of these are spoofed numbers for sure. I've tried calling some of the numbers that they have supposedly called from, just for grins, and usually they are disconnected or "this call cannot be completed..."

Unfortunately, that strategy backfires because it confirms to the robocaller that your phone # is "live", even though you haven't given them any info.  The calls will continue.

    Hello Julie D:

These people are trying to collect a debt from me for $95.00 that is over 10 years old and funny part is that this store where I had this credit card from went out of business in 2005. When they call I never pick up the phone and when goes to my answering machine they never leave a message.

When they call me I tell them I have Turretts syndrome and that I am prone to Swearing uncontrollably and making hidous threats and such.  then I begin a one way conversation regarding their lack of a father what a [***] their mamma is. . . that is usually enough to get them to hang up on me!

I do not understand why this scum of a company can collect debt that is not theirs.I never had a loan with them, they never gave me a penny so why do they have a right to harrass me when the debt is not theirs????? I never signed a contract stating I would pay them .This needs to be illegal!!!

Three calls from this number today--at 0956, 1505 & 1953 hrs CDT. Called 'em back after the last one.  Person that answered did "acknowledge" they are Portfolio Recovery Associates, BUT refused to give full name or address or anything else. Did give a garbled "jacque"/male name, with last name mumbled. When I stated that they were now in violation of the law being that three calls in one day (actually anything over two) are HARASSMENT by definition, his simple response was to try to talk over me, then hung up.
