I don't give my cell phone number out to telemarketers so I'm not sure why I would be on this list.

They call my cell phone about my ex-wife's credit card debt. Funny thing is, the B of A recently wrote off the debt and sent her documentation to that effect, including a 1099.

    Simple Fix
Had a collector harassing me over a debt that had long since been paid with proof sent. Fair Debt Collection Practices Act prohibits the very thing I've read here about what these people do. I used a company Krohn and Moss. They take it on a contingency and I ended up with $1,000 (per statute) for the harrassing phone calls. http://www.krohnandmoss.com/ 1-800-875-3666

No, I don't work for them, but I do know we have laws that are supposed to protect us from this krap, so why not use them? There are other law firms who will do the same, I'm sure, just that I had great success with this one.

    Good luck!

I keep getting these calls also. They wouldn't tell me who they were and they couldn't tell me who I owed. I have dealt with debt collectors before and this wasn't anything like the others i talked to. Its definitely a scam. I don't owe anyone anymore and these ppl still keep calling me. When I called them it went to a recording and when I clicked option for address it hangs up on you. Don't give them your information!!!

    Concerned Recipient
Received a called from 832-476-1739 with a very rude woman who asked for a specific person in the household but would not tell me why they wanted to speak with them.  Just stated in a very hateful way that she would have to talk to that person because she wasn't to talk to anyone else.  I stated that she would have to talk to me and in reply was told that she could not talk to me without the other persons permission.  I told her that the other person was working and not allowed personal calls and she made a statement of "we will just see".  I asked for the name of the company and she was very hesitant to tell me and I told her unless she gave me the name no one would be returning anything to the number.  That is when she grudgingly told me AVANTE USA.  These people need to stop or get people on the phone making calls with a better attitude.

The problem with Debt Collectors is that they're all scum.

    1) If you have a legitimate debt that you wish to pay, go through a credit reporting bureau or a LEGITIMATE Debt consolidation company (You'll have to google this one).  Retain all paperwork that the debt has been paid or settled and make sure that paperwork makes it into the hands of the 3 credit bureaus.  IGNORE ANY FUTURE ATTEMPTS TO RE-COLLECT THAT DEBT AGAIN.  As I said, Debt collectors are scum, even if you have paid or settled a debt, you will still be in the database.  Some "companies" will continue harass you, hoping to extort you for money that you do not owe.

    2) If you have no debts, have paid your debts, do not intend to pay a debt, are beyond the timeline of a debt, or believe the call is a mistake, DO NOT TALK TO THEM, DO NOT IDENTIFY YOURSELF.  Again, handle it through a legitimate company or ignore it.  Just identifying yourself can re-open a case and kill your credit score.

    3) To avoid identifying yourself, throw all questions back at them.  They will most likely hand up or not give you a straight answer.  Keep them going for a little while, they will usually hang up:

Them: Hello, is this John Smith?
    You: Who is this?
Them: This is AvanteUSA, is this John Smith?
    You: What is AvanteUSA?
Them: We can only tell that to John Smith.
    You: What is your name?
Them: I can't tell you that, is this John Smith?
You: You can't tell me your name?  What kind of company is AvanteUSA?

By this point, they will either hang up on you, or you can say, "I'm sorry, this sounds like a scam." and hang up.

First of all the only people who seem to be worried are the people who don't pay there bills...only in a few cases I'm sure are there actually mistakes and the person being called doesn't owe the money..second the statue of limitations only means that they can not sue you it does not mean they can boot report to credit or that they can not collect on a bill that you owe...I think it's funny that there are so many people on here talking carp about people who are doing there job to collect money that you owe..if you git the services pay your damn bill.

Thank you, Rip Van Winkle.  You do realize that you are replying here to someone who posted here about six and a half years ago?

That's what I think is funny.
