I received a voicemail from someone today. She said that she was calling from Summit trying to collect a debt. She left this number but really didn't say much else about it. I didn't call back because I didn't get the message until late. She said that she had a way to clear this debt. Her client would like to make arrangements to clear it up.

Same with me... I already paid $160 something because I know I had a bad credit card from a long time ago but never heard anything cuz the company closed and got bought out so I never heard or got anything from them after that. Now they were saying they set up remaining balance to takeout automatically of $450 and/or I need to call back today to set it up different arrangements. Now they have my checking information and I have to probably close everything. And they even emailed me information but now I can't open any of the attached information. Now  waiting to hear back from the bank. Single mom of two here... I definitely do not have time for this or the money!

I can relate to all you all. This company started calling me about a 2 weeks ago from a private number. They left voicemail. I heard it and it said they were in attempt to collect a debt? They called themselves Q.C. Holdings? They lied in the beginning. Then he said he was gonna take me to court in my town if I didn't pay? They then called my job and harassed the office staff? Then the office staff started calling me. They left a number with them to call and I did and asked for proof of the debt? They said they couldn't do that? They then said I would get a summons to my residence and they would garnish my check? They even knew when I got paid and also my social security number? I job said they wouldn't tell them anything about me. I asked them to send a letter and they said they wouldn't do that til after I make the payment and it had to made my checking acct or debit? I told them I dont' work like that. Any advice? I am not sending any money til I see proof. I called my creditor and they said they were legit, but I am reading on here that they are not?

Received a call on my cell from 702.267.6757 from a "Susan Smith".  Claimed that I wrote a bad check to her company and unfortunately she has no choice but to turn this matter to her NSF team with the recommendation that their rights be reviewed in reference to this matter. She advised me to call 844.498.6545.   I've checked my bank and do not see any NSF payments made to anyone.  I'm not sure what she is referencing.

From what I remember from MY experience working in a collection call center, it is illegal to mention ANYTHING specific regarding the matter when leaving a message as it violates credit privacy laws.  My name is NOT on my voicemail, so it is not even validated that this number is mine.

I missed the call from William King with Summit Receivables in Nevada, and I was left a voicemail. When I returned the phone call Amir answered the phone and transferred me to William King. I asked William King why he called my phone, and he said because he wanted to speak with someone (I am keeping their name confidential). I asked William King again why he was calling my phone number and he began to scream over the phone. He told me "Listen, it's simple. Pass the person the message!", and hung up on me. First of all what is the message? And second of all, it seemed like it was very difficult for William King to tell my why he was calling my phone. I cannot believe this is some sort of business who speaks to people like that over the phone. I looked up the company and I don't know who would hire these folks. I am a civilized person but if I wasn't, I would love to knock his teeth out for speaking to another person the way he did. He was definitely not raised right.

There are right and wrong ways to collect consumer debt, and laws which define correct practice. These have been referenced repeatedly in this thread. Try reading it and don't depend on others to do your thinking for you.

Really? That's your sage advice? Play Bad Cop Roulette until someone pleasant responds? When a collection agent relies on illegal threats, that's not a rogue employee but the status quo which everyone in the fraud shop is trained to meet. You don't "work out a settlement" with junk debt terrorists. You sue them and refuse to pay any original creditor or debt buyer which hires such thugs. Besides, once debt is sold off, the lender doesn't want your money or your pleas for mercy.

Besides the besides, you would be surprised by what penny-ante debts trashy companies will prompt collection lawsuits. They get larded on with interest and penalties and the plaintiffs expect to win by default through sheer fright.

Total scam.  Do not make any payments to anyone who calls you and says you owe money.  Demand a debt validation letter be sent to you by US mail.  E-mail no good.  Of course they won't do this, so just block their calls and ignore them.  All they have are a lot of empty and stupid threats.

    Report them:

    http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money,  tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  You might have to yell at the scammer and talk over him or her.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them .

} asked them to send a letter and they said they wouldn't do that til after I make the payment

You should have received a paper letter by the time of your post making specific required disclosures. Honest agencies send it promptly as the FDCPA requires. Crooks with flimsy claims make you beg for paperwork. The FTC doesn't expect you to pay a ransom for proof of claim. That defeats the whole point of a provision for validation.

Your creditor has a mushy definition of a "legitimate" debt collector. Stand by your decision to pay nothing to lawbreakers. Put your story together and sue Summit before next summer for the short stack of FDCPA violations you've described.
