They cannot make you pay over the phone...they must accept payment in any form other than cash, by mail.  They must give written proof of debt when asked and they must provide you with a physical address.  They must state they are a debt collector attempting to collect a debt and any information may be used for that purpose.  They cannot threaten court action. You cannot be arrested for this and they must first legally serve you before taking you to court, at which time you would present evidence that you tried to pay. All of these actions are illegal.  Call Verizon and ask who they sold the original debt too.  They have record.  Follow the bread crumbs and find out who truly owns the debt. Pay it if you know you owe it.  The people calling you now are  a third party scavenger/ scam debt collector (criminals).  They know you have or had this debt, but they do not own it.  They are just trying to collect on it.  Once you give them permission to debit from your card or account they can use that as an effort to take more than they said.  They are criminals and although your ID has maybe not been used to obtain credit of some sort...it has been violated and you don't really know what attempts have been made or will be made with your ID.  File a complaint with the FTC and then print out an ID theft Affidavit, found on the FTC site…. fill it out and then send it to all three credit reporting agencies and request a fraud alert on your credit profile.  Then send a request to CL Verify and Teletrack with the ID complaint and ask to have a security freeze put on your consumer report.  More than likely , this is where your information has been compromised....in those two databases. When filling out the ID theft affidavit, d o it as a possible attempt of ID theft and site the calls who  have all your information.  Remember a credible debt collector will not use any of these tactics.  They are for the most part friendly and willing to work for you.  They will give you all the information you request and that is how you know the difference between a scam and not.

My phone rang at 5:38 p.m. on Sunday Dec, 2, 2012.  I did not answer it.  If this is a bill collector, isn't it against the law for them to call on Sunday?

They are allowed to call between 8AM-9PM seven days a week UNLESS you write and tell them otherwise.

Received a call from this number this evening.  This must be a scam call because I have NO unpaid or delinquent debts.  Phone rang and disconnected before I answered.  My number is on the DNC list so I'll file a complaint there for whatever good it will do.

You don't need a valid debt or a derogatory trade line on your credit reports to be hassled by debt collectors. They call third parties to alleged debtors all the time for permitted skip tracing purposes, or often pretending it's a trace to annoy and shame an intended target whose location is already known. Collection calls are not automatically part of a "scam"; you have to examine the activity before drawing conclusions.

The federal Do-Not-Call registry exists to help enforce the Telemarketing Sales Rule. Please note the operative term ''marketing''. A debt collector is not a sales person. Here are the DNC service terms you were supposed to review at registration time:

Q&A: The National Do Not Call Registry
    http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt107.shtm

To a ''not me'' case I always recommend putting the collection agency on notice, just as you would if you were the target and the debt claim was invalid. Send a ''cease-communication'' notice via USPS Certified with return card. This is the method promoted by the FTC and many consumer watchdogs.

I'm real sick of these people calling my phone and then hanging up. And when i call to return the call, they hang up again. And besides the 800 number listed on top that they call from, they sometimes call from a private number as well. I don't like people disrespecting me and my phone and I certainly don't like being hounded and harassed for some bogus payments that they are trying to collect.

I think it's from a sprint bill....these phone contracts are the worse contracts. It's easier to get out of  the mafia then a sprint contract :)

Yes - they call my office line no less than five times a day.  I have no outstanding debt so if it's a collection agency then they have the wrong number.  I can't tell them that because the minute I get a live person on the phone they hang up on me.

They called and claimed I owe $56,000 on a VISA Card. I don't owe that kind of money on any card or to anyone, never have, I am 24 and only have one credit card and is a Master Card that I pay in full at the end of the month to avoid interest charges. This is very annoying!!!

Received a call from 866-212-7408 after several seconds of dead air a recording came on telling me they were a collection agency and to call them back.  Don't know why they called because I have no debt.  I did not call them.

The person that called me from this number had a very thick Indian accent and plus there was a lot of static in the message they left, so I couldn't tell what they were saying. However, I knew he was calling on behalf of some company because someone from this number called me before looking for someone who owed money, or something like that.
