This number called my cell phone at 8:13 am.
My own family doesn't even call me that early.
Unfortunately I had my phone on silent and I heard the same voice message as Neil. I only know onecriminal and he's definitely not trying to communicate with me. I just thought it was kind of odd.

A call from "The Inmate Prison Sysytem"  I shut my phone off the 2 times they called.

A third call today from the "Inmate Prison System".  My cell phone company cannot help me to block these calls.

Received two calls today. I called back and a Verizon automated message stated that the number had been changed or disconnected and was no longer in service.

i got called twice today tells me an inmate is trying to reach me will i accept a collect call . then it gives you another number to call to set up an account this is quite scary when you have achildren that are 19 and it could be them i think this is a scam

A call from 1-866-478-8892 came into my office this morning. As in the othe posts the recorded message stated it was from a inmate trying to place a collect call to my number. The recording stated it was from "Global Tel-Link" Advance pay dept. it asked to press the number "1" to refuse or "2" to accept. I did not (nor would not )press any key I just hung up. Google Global tel-link and you cannot find the 866 number in any of there records. Contact your State agency in charge of the phone utilities and file a complaint ( for me Washington State Utilities and transportation Comission)

i got the same call, i called back and it said that my call could not be completed as dailed....weird

Same here was weird that i got it on a prepaid minute phone and my other cell phone the same day that my boyfriend got a call from it too.

We have 3 cell phones in our house and all 3 got this call the same day. weird thing is 1 of them is prepaid minute phone that doesnt have any name registered or accountholder info except a zipcode. Also I do have a relative in a Federal Prison that I speak to once a week on 1 of my cell phones. He said that their phone was messed up for a few days and they couldnt get the funds transferred from the inmates account to the prepaid phone card service provider. I got a call from 877-233-3229  It said "this number has new information, press any key to find out more".   "You will receive a text message..  Got a text message that reads "Reply Y Now to get the info on the # you are trying to reach. Locator Srvc $9.99/month+std msg fees for 20 lookups/month. Support/terms? www.smsvw.com".  HAS ANY1 SEEN ANY CHARGES ON THEIR BILL?

Voice mail of my provider's recording saying collect calls are not accepted from Limestone Correctional Facility, which is in my state.  From the other posts, it appears the name of the facility is changing, maybe to one near the person being called.

My solution is to subscribe to call blocking. If I see calls from a particular number are going to continue I simply block them. Costs me $2.95 a month (or something like that, e.g., cheap).

It is the number for all jails I presume. It's a collect call. I live in Florida and received it from the Pinellas County Jail

Twice today....from Hudson County Jail in New Jersey.  At least this site tells me it's probably a scam of some sort.....

Will you accept a collect call from an inmate at the Gwinnett Probation Detention Center.  Last night 1 time in Spanish and 3 times today in English.  I disconnected all 4 times after I heard after I heard where the calls came from.

I get 2 or 3 calls from 866-800-0234 everyday.  It is a collect call from a jail and it gives the option to accept or decline.  My brother is with the FBI so I am turning the information over to him.

I also have a sister with the us district court and a brother in law with the IRS.  I am giving the number to them as well.

Starting receiving these calls yesterday.  Never accept but the voicemail picks up the recarding opening an account to accept these call.  I have already registered my cell number on the do not call list.  It is not stopping these calls.

I missed this call and it was on my collar id and when i called it back it said it couldnt make the call. Is there any way to let the person that called me know to call me back? And can i get a hold of them.

This number comes up on your phone when an inmate from a correctional facility tries to call you collect. Pay phones in prisons are different from regular pay phones in that they are owned and serviced by companies who have contracts specifically with with the state government/correctional facilities.  866-478-8892 is the number that comes up on your caller ID when an inmate tries to call you from a phone managed by Global Tel-link (GTL).  That is why the number is the same when it comes from different correctional facilities across the country.

Cell phones (and blocked land lines) cannot accept charges for collect calls the way a regular land line can.  So when you listen to the recorded GTL message and key in "yes" answers to their prompts you are instructed to put in your credit card information and a dollar amount which then creates a pre-paid "account" for the inmate to use to make collect calls to your number.

Once an account is created by the call recipient, the only number the inmate can use that balance to call is the number of the account creator. My guesses regarding why people who do not know inmates get these calls are 1) inmate may have dialed a wrong number, 2) inmates may dial random numbers in the hopes that someone will accept the charges and/or create an account so they will have someone to talk to.  Many of them are very lonely and bored and have nobody on the outside.

Regarding repeated calls over long periods of time to the same phone (if no inmate is trying to call) my speculation (and it is only that, speculation) is that once your number gets in to Global Tel-link's database (say an inmate dials your number once) the automated system continues to call you even if the inmate isn't calling you as part of a "glitch" (and I use the term loosely) to coerce you into creating an account so the company can get some extra money. Not an accusation... just speculation.

Be advised collect calls from correctional facilities cost MUCH more than collect calls from a regular pay phone.

I'd like to add, when you get arrested and end up in jail, you are immediately stripped of all of your possessions.  With technology the way it is today, who remembers phone numbers?  These calls are not only coming from federal prisons with long-term inmates, but from city and state jails as well where they take you right away.  The chances of an inmate dialing a wrong number, in the hopes of getting the number of a person they want to reach, is very high.

It is extremely difficult to get a message out when you have been put in jail, and it is impossible to get a message in to someone.

Also, I saw that someone above said they got calls like this on 3 different phones in the same house.  Sounds like someone got arrested and was trying to reach a person in that household!  Most states have government websites with an online database where you can find out if someone has been arrested by typing in their full name and date of birth.  The next time you get a call like that, it could very well be coming from someone you know who has been arrested and is trying to get to someone, anyone, on the outside.  Of course it can also be a wrong number....
