It is harassment or a scam if you are not the intended person they are looking for and you TELL THEM it is a wrong number, they leave messages saying it is due to anything regarding credit, they tell you in a message or on the phone that they are going to sue you or have a law suit pending.

There is only one way that I know of to fix this. Write a certified, signature required letter stating they are not to call your number, write your address, or in any way attempt to contact you otherwise. You can do a 3 page letter, but I like the simple option.

"You are not to contact me in any way at anytime in reference to anything. I have no business or obligation to (company name here) and will consider any contact from (company name here), other than a letter verifying receipt of this letter, as harassment and will pursue legal actions at any further attempt to call my number or write to my address."

    Period.

You will of course have to give them your personal information so that they can take it out of their records so that will suck, but you now have proof that they have been notified. Don't threaten more or curse because this will accomplish absolutely nothing. They are relying on your emotions.

I personally have a very large medical debt but I know who has the past due account. This is something that you may want to think about and verify (if you have a collections pending) so you are sure to be dealing with the company collecting.

Stop judging COLLECTOR [***] and instead be grateful you haven't had $10,000 in medical bills, or lost your house, or made a choice between paying your phone bill, car payment, or groceries for your family.

David Driscoll withthe office of Stephens, Michaels and Associates.  Asking for a relative's name who doesn't live  here.  Has called several times over the last couple of months.  (about once a day)
Will not tell me why they are calling, that it is personal business, and I told "David Driscoll" to stop calling me.  He said that he can't take my phone number off of the list until I gave him a contact number for the relative.

I got a call from this number today. I have a rule that I follow. When I get a phone call, I always say the person is not available at the moment. Please leave a message and I will have them call back. Most of the time, they never leave a message and just hang up. So since they will not give me a name they will never get to contact me. I trust no one.

Not related to this number, but we had someone calling us with a blocked ID for a while, and the scary thing is, they had my wifes name, date of birth and social security number. Not sure how they got it, but most likely one of those hacked services lately. Anyways, they kept telling her she needed to pay off her old capital one account that was never paid. Except, neither of us has ever had a capial one account. So I told her next time they call ask them for a name and phone number and you will call them back.

So she did that, and they immediately hung up and have not called back again. Very odd. I assume they were trying to get some sort of payment information from her. I guess they can steal her identity if they want since they have her information. We already notified our bank and they are monitoring things on their end for us.

On my side, I had someone in Florida attempted to use my debit card information to make a purchase at some motel. Luckily, my bank saw that I used my card in my state that same day, and they flagged my account because it did not sem right. I had to cancel my card and ask for a new one, and I am glad they were on the ball and everything. I am afraid to use my card now, at least online. I did a lot of buying online. I am not going to use my cards online anymore. I am going to pick up a visa GIFT CARD and just put money on that when I need to buy anything online. That way I know that even if they get that card information, they can not access my bank account funds. Only what I put on the gift card. :)

It's harassment if the person they're trying to collect a debt from doesn't belong to the number they're calling. I've had my cell number for 5+ years, they keep asking for a Sarah J. Conner. I have no idea who this person is. I've asked at least 100 times to be removed from whatever list my number is on. Yet, they keep calling.

This particular number must be automated or something. It gets sent to my voicemail, but then there's no message of any kind. I've had my cell number 5+ years and I've been getting calls from collections agencies looking for a Sarah J. Connor for 5+ years. I have no idea who this person is. no matter how many times I ask to be removed from whatever list I'm on, they still keep calling.

These people have been calling a phone that I have had for about a year for a non-profit historical society.  They leave no message and voice mail clearly states they have reached a church, which I know does not owe any debt.   They do not call my home or my personal cell number so I am pretty sure it is not me they want.  I just wish they would quit using the cell minutes.  As to Top Dog and Lauren.  Having been in the business and am now retired.  Your comments are uncalled for and just plain rude.  In all the years I collected for GMAC I never once called a customer names or belittled them.  (and I had the highest percent of monies collected every month)  Things happen that people can't pay (it is a very small percentage of people who purchase things with no intention of paying)   I am not sure who this company is but my guess is they purchase charged off accounts and then try to get payment through intimidation.  Well in my case I know the law regarding collections and my husband is any attorney I encourage people to use the knowledge and law to protect themselves.  You should deny the debt and request proof of said debt (ie contract, payments, ect) also request that they contact you only in writing and that no contact be made with any persons other than yourself.  Keep a log of how many times a day and what time they called.  No calls before 8am or after 9pm.  No more than 2 messages left in a 7 day period.  In some states no calls may be ever made to a place of business.  Check with your state laws.

This is a not very competent collection agency. They call me looking for someone else. I found the person's address and phone number in 30 seconds using White Pages on the Internet. What I want to know is why anyone with any pride would want to do this kind of sleazy work. Answer: they cannot find honorable work. (My credit score is over 800 and I have a lot of money so this is not sour grapes.)

Yes, pay your bills and make arrangements with creditors when you cannot, because if you don't you will be infested with parasites forever. Don't let your desire for material crap own your life. You can never have enough of what you do not need. Think about it.

this is whats wrong with this country! everybody is always looking for a way out or looking for something to [***] about! if you just paid your bills you wouldn't recieve collection calls!!! Collection agencies are hired by lendors or gaurantors that loaned you money, expecting you to pay it back! Why do you people think interest rates have sky rocketeted? Its because of DEBTORS! You don't want anymore calls... pay your bills!!! And as for the people that posted that they recieve calls & nobody is o the other end, its because there are so many "debtors" out there collection agencies need to use a dialer system to make that many calls per day! Stop the complaining & pay your bills! The calls will stop! I promise! Sheesh!!

    I don't get it.
Why do people on here feel the need to chastise anyone. Whether you pay your bills or not due to whatever the issue, why do YOU feel that you have to respond and attack these people. I hope you never have an issue that warrants someone picking at you or making snide comments. I am sure the people that bad mouth others don't do anything wrong because they pay their bills on time and do owe anyone. Maybe you could your knowledge for good and say something positive about how people can get out these situations instead of lurking on pages where people or trying to get information or maybe you ARE that collector and this is your way of putting people out there...Just seems like you could be more positive with your time and just move on to the next.

I think sickof it is right...who else would say such things other than nasty mean spirited people. Business is about relationships, may be work on dealing with people respectfully and providing customer service and people will reponsed appropriately. NO one likes to be threatened or bullied.

the collector DESTROYER replies to debba do
Well, now we know WHY they have so many voilations of the FDCA.  Apparently you're one of the purpetrators, clearly you think it's OK to violate the law... and, it's not illegal to refuse to pay a time-barred debt!  If you really want to help; tell this guy what he needs to do to stop them... if he doesn't know already.  And, consider how clueless you may be about 'why' someone is in debt.  Can you believe the hospital tried to get me to sign a paper saying I'd be responsible for my mother's debt, when she's covered by insurance anyway.... And, what about the guy you berated, it's not even his debt. (sheesh).

Dear person needing help,  see the first postings, or the postings previously listed where this debt collector is violating FDCA.  Send them a registered letter telling them to desist in calling you, that you are not the person they want. Or, inform them of your state laws about harassment and/or time-barred debts and tell them to desist.  Record your call (or not, they'll be glad to press another law suit.) Not that these criminals will pay their debts or stop harassing innocents.  But, sooner than later the FBI gets involved.  At that point, they'll go overseas and a whole new set of rules and laws go into effect.

I can usually get them to hang up on me in two seconds... and I HOPE they call back, because, twice in one day is enough to press suit, and once a day is enough for me to press suit with the attorney general.  There's money to be had here.  It's called damages. At the very worst, it's prison time.  So, the peons getting minimum wages better take care to KNOW the law before doing what they're told.  If the attorneys you work for are fighting lawsuits, and lying and breaking the law... what makes you think you're safe from them... Guess what.. you're not.  Is it worth your freedom for a few dollars?  Think about that.

Anyone being harassed... search the internet for FDCA and read the information given out by the .ORGs, then....proceed.  STOP HARASSMENT NOW!  Put the "real" criminals behind bars!
