Called again, I answered.... a live person was there... shocked.  I said that they call all the time for this person and they need to take our phone number off their list.  He said, "We would remove your number if you would tell us".... yea right... The fact that the robocall said "hang up if this isn't whomever" should take us off the list.

I don't think that is right.  They would have to garnish the money BEFORE it is received by the payee.  When it is in their account it cannot be garnished.

Can a debt collector garnish my bank account or my wages?
Answer: Yes, in some states, a debt collector may be able to garnish your bank account or wages. If certain federal benefits are directly deposited into your bank account, there are additional protections under federal law for some of the funds in your account.

Some states don't allow wage garnishments for certain kinds of debt. In other states, debt collectors who sue you in court and win may be able to freeze and take funds from  your bank account or garnish wages. The court's judgment will state the amount of money you owe. A later court order may also state how much may be taken from your bank account or garnished wages. State laws have limits on wage garnishment, to make sure you have something left to live on.

If federal benefits are directly deposited into your bank account, there are additional protections under federal law for some of the funds in your account.

I was finally home when they called today.  I often receive voicemails from them, with the typical "If this is not..."  The woman I spoke to was polite, knew my basic information, and had a valid hospital and date of service.  She offered some advice to facilitate my paying half of the $150 I owe.  I just wanted to verify their genuineness before giving them any money.

They look at social media sites, google names, & pay sites that provide personal information such as known relatives and friends. Then they keep searching until they find someone with a public phone# so that's how they called you.  Look yourself up on the internet. You'd be surprised at what you can find.

Sorry Rob, but they can't touch that money from SS or SSD if it goes in a seperate  account where this money is deposited alone and the bank knows. If you only get SSDI or SS to live on they can't touch your account.
