    I got one also
Received one today. I am not calling. I will deal directly with CitiM. Not some random that comes to my door. Very Tacky indeed.
We are not in bankruptcy, however are in an agreed moratorium.

The only disturbing thing I find is that yesterday I did file a complaint about a customer service rep and today this arrived.
Unsettling as to what information a scam company would have access to.

I've gotten 4 brown letters on my door saying the same thing, to call the 866 number. Yes I am behind on my mortgage payments, but it's very irritating coming home with a brown envelope on my door! Nobody knocks they just either put it in my mailbox or on my door and leave.

If this is from CitiM, why do they pay others good money to deliver these envelopes instead of paying those of us out of work (so we can pay the mortgage)? "Ranger Huh?" was driving an awfully nice truck and didn't look like he needed the money as bad as we do.....and Mafioso? They can take the house and it's negative (to the of 50K) 'equity' whenever they are ready to babysit the house. We have not contacted CitiM yet, because we have a HUD mortgage counselor who is negotiating for us. So what's the panic? They know we are concerned too and no need to throw more good money at this house....what a waste of time. Well somebody's got job security, eh?

One more thing, What's with the 'Homeownership Preservation Foundation' title and the great number (888-995-HOPE). "Anything to get them to call"

We had the same exact thing happen to us. About 2 hours ago. My mother in law typed in the number and discovered it was a scam. My husband got the description of the car and what the man looked like. The vehicle was in the mid 90's black chevy 1500 with the plate number BTZ 2500. The man was a black male who looked to be in his 30's about 6 feet tall. He was wearing a tan vest, brown camouflage pants and hiking shoes. We called the police and they did a report but they cannot do anything about it. BUT DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION.

Found brown envelope on doorknob with name Ranger Fairbanks and number 866-940-5787. Figured it was some kind of scam because it did not list any company name. BEWARE! Is there any policing organization we can report this to?

An athletic mid twenties SEROIUSLy POUNDED on my door on Saturday AM, when I answered, he asked if I was "Kathryn BxXXXXXX". When I said yes, he said this is for you, handed me the brown door hanger/envelope - then headed right back to his little white pickup.

We have slipped a couple times on our mortgage, (hasn't everybody lately???) but we have been in communication with Citimortgage.  All feels a little shady to me.

NOT A SCAM, PAY YOUR MORTGAGE replies to gy

if you have received a letter from your mortgage company asking you to give them a call, it is because they have made a ton of attempts to contact you via mail and phone and you have done little or nothing to discuss your situation with them, the reasons for your delinquency, and how you are improving or will be improving. in these cases, mortgage companies (and other creditors, too) must take action that will hopefully get your attention. so, call them back. make arrangements. weird door hangers, letters, and collections calls will go away...

    Envelope delivery guy
To all of you who call this a scam - I ask you this: DID the delivery guy go to your neighbors house, or leave a card on your nieghbors door?  NO --We are paid per house and recieve a list from a very well know Mortgage Field Service Company --- this is why the person at your bank knows  nothing about this person sent to your door-- they didn't send us !!! The banks are Sending several companies these inspections to look after their Assets( that's right THEIR assets) See until you make that last payment, and the check clears, that house is property of the banks, and they will do everything within their power to see that it is worth close to what they have into it.  If I Report your house as vacant-- we service your house--- change the locks and winterize --etc..  I know times are tough and you fall into denial, but come on !!!  most of you know that you are behind in your mortgage, so just pick up the phone and call them!!! By the way -- these types of inspections suck--- most we don't need to get out of the car!!!!

I also received a brown envelope with the "important notice" on the inside however, I was not home, my teenage daughters were and what scares me even more is that the woman came to my door and when my kids would not open the door, she claimed she was from "Farmers Insurance Company" which just happens to be my insurer, this woman went into my mailbox!!!! and seen I had mail from them! so, she called herself being clever, my daughters tried to describe this woman as a heavy set brunette/auburn hair approximately 5'5" she drove a newer model saturn/scion/hyundai type sedan and she also had a female in the car with her that had a ponytail. we are also working with citi but are not being forclosed on.  Is someone leaking info at citi?

soccer mom replies to Its about time
Then why would they go through mail boxes to obtain a false identity ? this is a federal crime!! is it not? citi says " call citi if you are unsure about these people and they will tell you if they have sent them to you, but do not give anyone information until you speak to them" In my case these people were falsifying themselves they were NOT sent by citi.
I'm not evading the mortgage company, and these people are entering homes to find out days later that they are being robbed! they are casing homes and getting personal info from unaware people, I agree to do the homework and find out who they are but, know also that you should deal DIRECTLY with the mortgage company and that it is a possibility that they have sent them.

I got a business card handed to me by a local guy here where I am from.  He tried to sell me some deal on how to be a vacation specialist.  I am best friends with his cousin!  I  called the number, and citi mortgage picks up.  I am behind on my bills, but when I call Citi, they will not take my money!  This happened 3 times in 2008!  I try to do a mod thru citi, get denied, no explanation.  Next thing I know, I'm getting a summons for foreclosure.  Yes, people try to contact the lender, and the lender is too "busy" to try and help us out here trying to save our homes!  I went thru NEW HOPE MODIFICATIONS, and they scammed me out of $1000!  What next?!  So take your BS and shove it.  All there seems to be out there now are scammers, thieves, and vultures!  And to you jerks who prey on foreclosed homes and families, Screw YOU!  I tried to get help, and no one will.

This afternoon (on a Sunday), I got a flimsy piece of paper on my door with this number and the name of -- you guessed it -- Ranger Fairbanks. Like an idiot, I called the number. But then the recorded message asked for the last four digits of my SSN. It felt too weird, so I hung up.
