- sparkview replies to vtec| 1 replyCitibank will NOT speak to you without you verifying (ad nauseum, i might add) your name, address, telephone numbers (not that they actually return calls, because they do NOT) and your ss # or your loan number.
- sparkview replies to homeownerSo so true... your post reads like exactly what happened to me... ..
- anno nymousI am turning in the envelope to local, state, and fedare housing authority for investiaging if this is s scam.
- Julie replies to homeownerWe're going through the exact same thing - we've NEVER missed a payment - not one - but have started receiving the "If you don't pay, we're going to start foreclosing" letters. The modification program is a joke - we were dropped because they didn't receive paperwork we sent in 3 times. I regret ever asking for help from Citi.
- brob replies to Terryyou need to identify your company right on that door hanger or no one will call the number. it totally looks like a scam
- sulayman replies to JohnUh, I am, via the assistance program stated above. This 3rd party brown envelope on a doorknob tactic is HARRASSMENT. They will hire anyone with a car (like the census) to leave these notes with a number to call WITH your account # - hello?...they already KNOW my account # and there is no need to divulge private info to a 3rd party, scam or not!
- jmI have rec'd 2 of these brown envelopes in the past few weeks. I have been in contact with CitiMortgage and have been current on my loan since January. CitiMortgage has my telephone number and if they need to be in correspondence with me, they can call me. I get mail from CitiMortgage and it never looks anything like this stuff. I called them regarding the brown envelope, and they said not to call the number or ever give my account number out over the phone. If your mortgage company calls you; they already have your name, account number, address, and so on.....I would just spread the word to let people know to ignore this brown envelope scam!
- Ellen replies to Odkin| 1 replyMy mortgage isn't even with CitiMortgage, it's with PNC. When I called the number they left they had no idea why I received the message. Sounds like someone is getting paid for nothing.
- Ellen replies to EllenAlso they didn't leave a brown envelope, it was a normal white one with a yellow legal postit hand written.
- CitiMortgage: Never Again !! replies to OdkinFYI, I applied for modification w/ Citi. I purchased my house in 2006; 25% down payment; 805 FICO score. Last year I tried to refinance - having never missed a payment and gainfully employed at same job as 2006. Citi denied my request. In Feb. 2010 I was laid off. I called Citi the next day to advise. Nothing was offered, i.e. reduced payments, etc. In May 2010 I applied for the Obama modification - - Sent Citi the application and 44 pages of backup. Never ever received a word, call or email from Citi. I called THEM six times; spoke to Lakisha, Wanita, Sherilynne, you name it. The last one told me that I did not qualify for modification because they only "service" my account. Said my house was owned by Fannie Mae. Yes, Citi LOST my house to Fannie Mae and we tax dollars bailed out Citi. Fannie Mae does not modify loands for unemployed people even if you have substantial savings. THank you Citi for neglecting to say that up front and have me call six times and spend a day completing thne paperwork.
Flash ahead: REceive daily calls generated from the PHILLIPINES because there are not enough Americans today to staff those jobs???? Citi's "credit collections department" They are not going to get anymore blood from this stone. Citi's "homeowners assistance team" calls my house at 8am and 7pm. I rarely answer: Yesterday I did, told them I am still unemployed. They said to let them know when I am....yea, duh, right. And later that same day? Yet another call. Uh, no I don't have a new job since this morning when you called.....
I received a notice hanging on my door to call Citi at the same number as everyone else. So Sir, to end this statement - - Citi does NOT email however does send correspondence (and received same from me); I called THEM; and I spoke to them by phone. So - it is ridiculous to have someone come to my house and hang the note. Citi has been a horrible experience since day one. If - and IF, I ever am so stupid as to buy a home and put 25% down voluntarily so as to have the lowest possible payments - on top of a SUPREME FICO SCORE, I will never ever ever ever - even if they were the ONLY MORTGAGE COMPANY IN EXISTENCE - use Citi again. THey have made a tough situation much worse - they treat customers as criminals. I am disgusted and furious.
Sucker in California - Still screwed by citi replies to AnonymExactly !!! Same thing happened to me. Waited three months, never heard anything from THEM. I called six times and was told to be patient, that it would take "months" for them to decide on my applicaiton for modification only to be told - when I called THEM for the sixth time to check back - that my mortgage holder (Fannie Mae) does not allow modification for unemployed (but CitiMortgage holders can be unemployed). Nice, since my loan WAS with Citi until the government (us as in you and me) bailed Citi out...and Citi lost my house to Fannie Mae. Does it say anything in the application or on their website that you don't need to bother to apply if your house is now held by Fannie Mae? No because that would be (a) straight forward and Citi is twisted; (b) honest, and Citi is not; (c) obvious and Citi is obtuse.
- Placebo replies to sparkviewSparkView -
You are INCORRECT. Citi will in fact speak with you without your ss# or loan# to verify any scam that may be going on with any kind of stupid brown envelope with a number in it, claiming to be Citi.
We got the same envelope. When my wife called the guy mumbled who he was and at first would not give his name, and then finally did... IF... it was even his name. However, unlike a real Citi employee, he would not give his ID number. They all have ID numbers and will give it to you.
I'm sure that this is all either a scam, or some lame, cut throat outsourced collections company hired by Citi gone rouge to get as much money as they can out of their cut of the deal. - PLACEBO| 1 replyThis doesn't really help with a mysterious phone number left on your door, but this is your right to request creditors, collection companies to verify and/or prove what they say is real and/or accurate.
If you suspect or know something is inaccurate or incorrect you can send them a letter like the below that they are required to respond to. Take your info and insert, and/or modify at your discretion. It's more of a template. This sort of letter is also for the bully tactics creditors can often take.

They made record profits in the last 15 years and now the market is correcting itself at the homeowners expense. If the banks weren't so greedy people would make their payments. Don't you think that they would if they could?
- Field Inspector| 1 replyI, too, am a field inspector. I do deliver these door hangers daily to many homes, from many different mortgage companies. I have delivered notices to the same homes for almost a year. My job is to identify the owner, hand them the envelope, and let them know that their lender would like them to contact them and that the information was in the envelope. Many, many times the people will say " I just talked to them", etc. My only reply is great, they just want to keep in touch.
These are big companies, with thousands of loans, many in various phases of delinquency. We are the messenger, we do not want personal information, we do not know anything about your situation, our primary job is collect information on the property (whether occupied, overall condition, for sale, utilities on, etc.). Understand we are there to protect the home for the lender incase you were to abandon your home. It does happen, frequently. We can hopefully secure the home before it gets damaged.
Why did I come to this site? I guy yelled at me a couple month back for leaving this scam envelope on his door. He wanted me to wait for the police. I said sure, I will wait and then handed him my business card and showed him my ID. Once he realized I must not be a fraud because the information I gave him, he mellowed out and we talked about why he was getting the envelope. He said he was in contact with Citi and I just told him that all they want is to be kept in the loop.
Many people do not know that we even come by their home unless we need to deliver the envelope. I always put my card in an envelope and seal it and write the name and street address on the envelope. If someone other than the owner answers the door I simply ask them to give the envelope to the owner.
We are not a scam. We are just doing a job, that may be unpleasant at times, to try to pay our bills.
Unfortunately not everyone is as professional about it as they should be. - Christine replies to Field InspectorThank you for the great explanation
- CB replies to aunt bPerhaps it's time to take responsibility that you are behind on the payments - Most likely you weren't answering calls from your bank & waited until the last minute to fix the problem. They wouldn't take your money if you couldn't come up with the entire amount of deliquent payments - happens to everyone - face it you screwed up.
- CB replies to ChrisOK Mr. Marine Sniper - Go ahead & shoot one - You'll lose your house anyway & spend the rest of your life in jail - just for being an idiot.
- CB replies to LeeIf you are behind on a mortgage payment you know they can start the foreclosure procedure - So get ready to have someone at your door or taking photos of your home - They are protecting their assets & looking into the value of the property. COME ON PEOPLE.....STOP BLAMING EVERYONE ELSE!
