- maria fragosogot a call from an annoying person that did not want to tell me from where he was calling me from
- Caller: unknown
- ZannieThey call multiple times a day and never leave a message. I answered once and they said they were collecting for a debt on a credit card. I haven't owned a credit card for over 10 years. The company is called Portfolio Recovery Associates. They are currently being sued by several attorney generals in the U.S. I did a little research on them - They buy pools of "alleged debt" and try to collect by any means possible (legal or otherwise) and threaten to damage your credit standing. They claim to use Experian. I'm filing a complaint with the FCC.

- PC replies to Wendy| 1 replyIt's always a recording. There is no use in blowing whistles in their ear. You would have to engage them in conversation first before you blow the whistle. And you can be sure they are ready for that and it will not stop the calls.
Simple solution: change your phone number and make it unlisted.
This is not a reputable company. We have gotten calls from their various numbers for more than five years and it is not even us they are calling for. Telling them doesn't work. We do know the person they're calling for and that person has excellent credit - just bought a new car and was told her credit is excellent for borrowing even in these bad times. Always pays her bills on time. We don't even admit we know that person who has NEVER lived here nor had this phone number.
Change the phone number. Only solution. - Ted Kaczynski| 1 replyCan I please have your address? Thank you!

- Pooky225these people called at 6.51pm ona SUNDAY night, isnt there a law against people calling at this time on a sunday??? if not there should be. Did not leave a message.
- John SmithI got 3 calls from this company on a Sunday---one around 6pm which is
dinner time for most people.
Since when do they bother people on the weekends? I have a dispute
with a landlord who tried to make me buy a new rug and pay $71.00 for a
lousy Venetion blind that I didn't even dent.
I also have a dispute with Hometeam Security that I was with 21\2 years.
After moving they tried to force me into another 3-year contract and did
not move the devices to my new home. I owed them about $180.00 in moni-
toring but they trumped that up to over $400.00.
Well, deceitful businessmen---it's been over 5 years and you haven't gotten a penny from me and I'll go to the grave before I'll pay you
a lousy cent!
John Smith - SusiApparently these crank calls think everyone is STUPID but them. But the people who had this number I now have were mex.. so they might have run up bills from all over and skipped town.
- Caller: dunno
- SusiThese jokers must think everyone is stupid but them, but this phone number I have was previously owned by a mexican, cause I always get mex. names showing up on this ID caller.

Portfolio Recovery Associates, (PRA) bottom feeders with deep pockets, have apparently figured out how to get blood from a turnip. They collect on accounts dating back to the 90’s -- accounts so out of statute that most consumers can’t even remember if they even existed.
These vultures live off the grief and (in some cases) the time barred debts of unsophisticated consumers. Like most of the bottom feeders out there, PRA and Anchor are fighting the density of junk debt buyers who have flooded the market. To say the price for accounts has gone up is an under-statement. PRA is paying more just like everyone else to stay on top of the market.
One of PRA's favorite tricks is to use the IRS to collect for them. They issue the debtor a 1099C for the amount of the debt, then charge the full amount off as a loss. We've heard cases of other agencies collecting later on the same debt. Could PRA be charging off the full amount, then selling the account to another junk debt buyer? The poor consumer gets screwed in more ways than one. First, he's paid a questionable debt via a settlement to PRA - perhaps 60% on a debt they most likely couldn't have proven in court. Secondly, his taxes are hit when the IRS waves this 1099C in his face. They are effectively collecting for PRA at this point, since PRA took the loss (100%) of something they paid only pennies on the dollar for. Third, the consumer has to face the debt again when the junk debt buyer comes after him anew. Hopefully, the IRS will catch onto this scam. PRA is a publicly traded company, so one would think they wouldn't be able to get away with this type of financial accounting for very long without some preying eyes.

- Pat replies to Fed Up & Fighting BackI have never been contacted by a company I have done business with informing me that I owe them money. All my bills are paid on time, so I don't know where they got my number. If I answer, I get a recording. If the machine answers, they sometimes leave the same message on the machine or hangup, like this morning.
The FTC complaint form asks how I contacted Portfolio Recovery Associates. I prefer not calling, emailing, or even writing to them. This may give them a person associated with a computer generated number. - Stop the harassmentThe best solution is to write them a certified letter as follows:
(Date)
To Whom It May Concern:
I have been contacted by your company about a debt you allege I owe. I am instructing you not to contact me further in connection with this debt. Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, a federal law, you may not contact me further once I have notified you not to do so.
Sincerely,
(Name)
They claimed I owe for something 18 years ago. the right thing is to pay - but not required by law, especially to scuz buckets. If you continue to receive calls after firing off the letter, then file a complaint online at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/- Caller: Portfolio Recovery Associates

- FloridaI just received a phone call from 877-803-0008 and because I am sitting at work, I did NOT pick up the phone call. No voice mail was left. I googled the phone number and this is the website that came up. I have NO bad credit and there is no reason this debt collector (or whoever it is) should be calling my cell phone number. This is the first time they have ever called me and I have no idea why they called. Strange.
