Check the Statute of Limitations for debt in your state. California is 4 years. If you do not acknowledge the debt verbally or in writing, you can simply write them, DO NOT acknowledge the debt, but inform them of the State Statute that covers debts, insist that they no longer contact you in any manner.

Many of these collectors buy old debts, then brow beat and annoy people into paying the off.

Check the regulations on drawing SSI benefits. There is a certain amount of income you are allowed to make and still claim Your benefits. You know, the ones you paid into for the work you did during your life. Now if this person were on SSD, I'd have to agree with you.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

I have been harassed for months from these dill-wads. I owe nobody anything whatsoever. My wife accidentally answered
one of their call and they wanted to know where my previous wife of 89 days was (that was 20 years ago) . Why am I getting harassing phone calls for a collection attempt at a woman I was married to for 89 days 2 decades ago? This is totally wrong!
My call blocking lets this caller through 100% of the time. WTF?

An another plant by the company. And no they will not alway suit, and because they will not aways win and if they do they still might not be able to collect the debt.

Yea, maybe if your company didn't try to collect mega profits on small money amount loans at 40% people might pay ontime more offen. Today some bank's make more interest than a loan shark, i kid you not.

    Just FYI
I use 800Notes to look up every number I suspect is telemarketing.   After reading the notes here and saw this is a legit number, I called them back and they were trying to contact someone with a different name.  The lady was polite and removed my number from the person's account.  Hopefully that will keep them from calling back.  I'm mainly saying this to say I'm grateful for this website and people that share their experience.

The caller ID said "Free Call Toll".  I don't answer 800 numbers that pop up on my caller ID.  But having read the comments I can see that Apelles is a very unprofessional organization.  They are now added to my blocked list.  I did laugh at the troll comments.  I guess as Bill Murray once said in Ghost-busters, "  This man has no dick."

You Lie replies to Nick P
You obviously work for these low life phone sharks.   I get calls from these scumbags all the time and I have never dealt with U S Bank.   I have tried repeatedly to have my number removed - they keep asking for someone that I do not know, never heard of and have absolutely nothing to do with, I tell them this every time yet they will not remove my number.    8/12/2016  I just had another call and when I told them I don't know the person they are calling for the man on the line called me a liar !   Apelles - if that's what they call themselves are the scum of the earth and should be prosecuted for harassment. !!

    "WaltG",
You have it wrong. SSD comes from an insurance fund. These people worked (many of them for a long period of time) before they applied and we're approved by physicians and auditors. They must have an actual documented disability.
That is not the case with ssi check collectors. They must go to court to win their case before a judge. The have not worked and paid into the SSA account long enough to draw SSD.
