- GeneGot a call on my two numbers but did not answer because caller ID said "Toll Free Call" which are usually telemarketers or spammers and I don't answer them. After checking here, I called them back. I applied for a card online and they wanted to verify that it was me applying and not a case of identity theft. I told them that their caller ID should be Bank of America to properly identify them.
- Caller: Bank of America
- Rick BThis number is NOT Bank of America and Bank of America told me they have absolutely no relationship with the people who are representing they are an independent company hired to independently verify information on my credit card application. The contact from 888-231-6262 reached me through and unrelated person who received the initial telephone call when they attempted to reach me. The person who received the call knew me and passed on the message to return the call and they gave me a specific case reference number. I asked the person at 888-231-6262 why they didn't have my telephone number if they were verifying my credit card application. They responded that they use public records to find your contact number rather than the information on my application. If that sounds absurd then it can be nothing but absurd. They asked me for additional personal information under the guise that they needed to verify who I am and process my application. I asked for the contact name and information for their contact at Bank of America. I was given another number to call which remarkably was nothing more than another number to the same "independent verification company". If you receive a call from this number, contact Bank of America and report the attempt.
- AMI received a call from this number today. I never pick up for numbers I don't recognize. They left a voicemail saying: "I am calling from the Bank of America fraud department in regards to a financial request we received in your name. This is not a solicitation or sales call. We are trying to ensure you have not been a victim of identity theft. Please return my call at your earliest convenience." They gave me a personal reference number as well.
I applied for a credit card online a few days ago, so I called the credit card department at Bank of America directly (1.800.732.9194) and the customer service rep spent 15 minutes with one of their analysts trying to verify if they needed any additional information from me, or if they even tried to contact me at all.
She said that they had not tried to contact me, and that any information regarding my credit card application would be sent in the mail. She also said that if the person called me again, I should contact Bank of America and report it.
This may have been a legitimate call in some people's cases, but it wasn't for me.
My advice: always check with the bank directly. Don't ever give out personal information to unverified sources.- Caller: 888-231-6262
- ChrisAlso received a voice mail to call them back. I was suspicious. Representative asked me if my address, mothers maiden name, email address were accurate. I never gave them the correct info, just answered no to each incorrect question he asked me. He then stated he would cancel the application. He offered to transfer me to their Fraud Protection Group. I refused. I wonder if that Group is the one who tries to sell you crap.
- r replies to shalaMy daughter got a call from that numbere too. They said someone was trying to open a card with her name on it. She call the Bank of America at there the Card fraud listed on the bank of America website. They said the she had no such report. and the number 888-231-6262 is not one of their numbers. A scam!!!!!
- JimI saw this number on my caller ID; they apparently called and left no message. I would think that if it was legit, they'd have left a message.
- Caller: toll-free number
- TheOtherJim replies to JimIf this number really is Bank of America Fraud Protection, why don't they include that information in their Caller ID? All the display says is "Toll-free Number," and they left no message. That, to me, says "spoofed Caller ID."
- MichaelMy wife received a call on her cell phone saying that they were Fidelity and trying to verify a credit card application.

- Fraud Squad| 6 repliesPart of a massive fraud campaign targeting numerous financial institutions. Note the pattern of shill postings all claiming they received a genuine call - an obvious giveaway.
The large number of phony posts claiming the call is genuine come from the fraudsters themselves, spamming the site to try to fool people. There is a similar pattern to other fake calls claiming to be from Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, PayPal, etc. all with the same shill postings:

- William replies to Fraud Squad| 5 repliesYou keep posting your list but have never provided independent proof that the numbers you listed are actually scam numbers, because you have never taken the time to contact the financial instutions yourself to verify the numbers are in current use by those institutions.
We all know fraudsters spoof the phone numbers of legitimate companies. - WolfmanJack replies to William| 4 repliesThis is another repetitive spammer, usually comes out sometime around the full moon when the moon beams seem to disrupt its single brain cell. Never has anything intelligent to say.
