- Rodney Martin replies to shaneThis is Citi calling. Called me yesterday called the number on the back of my card and they comfirmed it
- KatyFRAUD!! Received a text telling me to call because Citibank had detected fraud on my account. Called the number on my card NOT the one in the text. Was transferred to Citibank's Fraud Department. They told me that this is a phishing scam and that "(888) 296-0988 is not one of their numbers. Those who say it's not a scam are part of it!

- GillianIt is a scam.
- ButchCitibank says that this call is **not** legitimate. The message that was left on the machine said "card number ending in xxxx" which is an old, old card. Citibank says that, if they'd had a question about a charge, they would **not** have referenced an old card number. This is a phishing call--to get current information.
ALWAYS CALL THE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF YOUR CARD ****FIRST****.- Caller: no name showed on ID
- R| 1 replyThe number is legit. I received a text message to call this number. I called and was told that was my account was hacked. Before that, I double-checked my account online and it said that there was a security issue. I would advise that you do the same before calling the number. If you don't have online banking, please enter the year of 2015! I did have to give my information on the phone and the lady closed my account and will send a new card

- Fraud SquadPart of a fraud campaign targeting numerous financial institutions. Note the pattern of shill postings all claiming the number is real - an obvious giveaway.
The large number of phony posts claiming the call is real come from some con artists spamming the site to try to fool people. There is a similar pattern to other fake calls claiming to be from Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, PayPal, etc. all with the same shill postings:

- KenI got a text from the number 956-86, which is the number that Citibank's fraud department uses to notify me of fraudulent activity. It instructed me to call the number 888-296-0988, which I did. I discussed my credit card account and activity with the person on the line, and they found a potential fraudulent charge and closed my account. I did have to give them my card number and security code, and they sent me another verification text from the number 669-52.
After reading some of the comments here, I got nervous about the whole thing, so I called Citibank's main customer service number. They verified that there my account *was* just closed for potential fraud. So it appears that the 888 number is legitimately a Citibank phone line. It's weird and nerve-wracking that the number doesn't appear anywhere on Citibank's web site, though.- Caller: Citibank
- myglorydays replies to KevinMy account had a message at the top of page saying contact fraud dept. I took this to mean it was real & they were very helpful. They told me the internet account trying to charge. Google Play hits once again.
- EdYes - it is Citibank; but they really need to re-think having these calls routed to a Call Center in India. I called and after giving some information I became too suspicious and hung up - went to the website where I also saw a message and then called the number on the back of the card.
Again, with all of the fraudulent activity and scams originating out of India, one would think Citibank would have better common sense.- Caller: Citibank Fraud

- Its LegitI got the same text as others. I chose not to call back but log into my account online. My account had been flagged so I called the number on the website and they did shut down my account and send me a new card. So I am not sure about the number that comes thru on the text but I can tell you that when you get the text you need to get a hold of Citi...

- Gae knight423-467-6460. Is legitimate fraud dept from Citi. On 7-15-15. 423-467-6460 Called and said my card was just put on hold. They knew my name and last 4 digits of my accnt number. They said I had just used my card at a gas station which was true and they knew the exact amount I spent. Once I verified that it was me who used the card the said they lifted the hold. Then I asked for a replacement card that mine was slightly damaged he asked for the 3 numbers on the back and I provided and he said they would issue a new card. I then got suspicious and called the number on the back of my card and they verified it was them and that my card had already been mailed to me. He even verified exactly what was said and he told me that I had asked for the new card before I even meantioned that part.
