These people all say the same things. Owe from a paydayloan.. case is on their desk.. person of interest.. blah blah blah.
Then they tell you your ssn and what countyyou're in (mispronouncing) and that you had better call back bc of fraud and bad check charges. I think once I was even told that they were sending it to the DA's office. LOL.
Got TWO calls today.. one from some woman who tried to give me my case number and her contact information. Then she started her schpeel about this being a very serious legal matter. I interupted her and asked what was it going to be today? Jail Time, cops coming to my job.. what? She just hung up on me.
Louis Steadman also left a message saying that I needed to call him back ASAP, bc he "really didn't want to get my place of employment involved". Not sure what they would have to do with anything, but I didn't bother calling back. He's been leaving the same BS messages for months now- and if he was going to do something (not that he could legally, as payday loans are illegal in my state) he would have done it by now.

A couple of weeks ago, I recieved a phone call from these people claiming to be from a firm named Spellman and Rowman.  They gave me a case number and told me if I didn't pay $600.00 by 1:00 p.m. the next day, they would have to tune me over to the authorities.  I paniced because they new my bank routing number and social security number.  I took down the information they gave me.  They told me to get the money and take it to Bank of America, fill out a deposit slip using the account number 223004167438 and have the bank fax it to 877-836-0073.  The lady, Renee,
also gave this number to call 877-627-0413 ext. 4021.  This is a frightening situation.  I looked then up on the internet before doing anything.  Thank God I found this information.  This kind of prey on people needs to stop.  Thank you.

Monica, Oh my goodness, I have fallen a victim of these people, Sydney told me that this was going to the authorities if I didn't pay this bill, I owed a company called zip cash $145, she claims that it was over $400., so like a dummy I sent her all the money but a balance of $32 which is left to pay this, I have tried and tried to call thi 888-441-4001 ext 4027 and a recording comes on and says it is now out of reach for my area, I didn't have the money to begin with but, when she said legal action I naturally started to pay, now I can't get a hold of anyone, who do I go to next, because I will never see that money again

jane spellman called me and said that i needed to settle up on a debt on a pay day loan . or i was going to be locked up for stolen money . well guess what like a idiot i believed it and agreed to pay 120 dollars every 14 days until it was paid in full. well so far i have paid 360 dollars and called august 12,2008 to give my transaction # and this #1-888-441-4001 can no longer be reached from my area. scared i was going to be locked up and put in jail , i searched for them on the internet and this is what i found i can not believe that i was so stupid . the person i spoke with was supposed to be jane spellman ext.4024 out of south carolina. all i can say is i hope they catch them and everybody gets their money back. i pray to god!!!!!!!!!!

It's most definitely a debt collection scam. I suggest you report these crooks to the federal and state law enforcement agencies listed below. (And if anyone at this scam saw your bank account number or credit card numbers, you should contact your banker/card issuer immediately regarding changing the account numbers.)  In case you didn't see my messages earlier in this thread, here is some background on these criminals:

This is a not a law firm nor is it a legitimate debt collection company -- far from it.

Spellman & Roman/Veronica Masters (or whatever other aliases they're using) is the latest incarnation of the infamous Bass Prelitigation/Ellis Crosby/States Predisposition/US National Bank/United Legal Processing scam in Jacksonville, FL. (More background info on this particular scam can be found here: http://budhibbs.com/debtcollectorpages/ellis_crosby_and_associates.htm )

The main thing to remember is that anytime someone calls you demanding money to prevent your arrest, it is ALWAYS a scam. No debt collector or attorney (let alone criminals posing as debt collectors and attorneys) have the authority to have anyone arrested for anything. (And it's illegal to them to threaten such a thing; it's also illegal for them to make any false threat, such as suing you when they no intention or authority to sue you.) And since these dirtbags routinely impersonate law enforcement (which is also illegal), it's also important to remember that American law enforcement officers aren't in the business of debt collection.  (Debt is a civil, not a criminal, matter.)  And rest assured that any threat that there will be a "disturbance" at your home is false and highly illegal. (This "disturbance" threat was often made by these same scammers when they were masquerading under the name States Predisposition Services.)

The bottom line is, these are criminals who extorted money from you. Be sure to report them to all the following agencies:

1) File a complaint with your local police or sheriff. Most police departments will take a report over the phone.  Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.  (This is especially important if these scammers threatened you with arrest or "a disturbance" at your home.)

2) File a complaint with the Florida Attorney General at http://myfloridalegal.com/contact.nsf/contact?Open&Section=Attorney_General  Be sure to tell them that Spellman & Roman appears to be connected to the Jacksonville-based Ellis Crosby/Bass Prelitigation/States Predispostion scam. (By the way, Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum is very aggressive in pursuing such debt collection scammers.)

3) Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov  Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone with a myriad of illegal threats. Be sure to give as many details as you can.

4) The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.

5) File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.naag.org

6) Since these Jacksonville, Florida scammers are (falsely) representing this latest incarnation of their debt collection scam as being based in Moncks Corner, SC, you should also file a complaint with the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs at http://www.scconsumer.gov/complaint_services.htm  In your complaint to the SCDCA, be sure to suggest that their investigators contact the Florida Attorney General Economic Crimes Division for details on these three Jacksonville, FL companies: Ellis Crosby & Associates, Bass Preligitation, Inc. and States Predisposition. (Note that States Predisposition Services, Inc. is incorporated in Folkston, Georgia but is really operating out of the Bass Prelitigation "office" in Jacksonville.) It may also help South Carolina authorities to also reference in your complaint these links, which help chronicle the progress of these scammers from Jacksonville, FL up Interstate 95 to Folkston, GA and St. Mary's, GA and now to Moncks Corner, SC:

If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (Report them to all the agencies above each time they call you. Be sure to save any voice mail messages and, if legal in your state to do so, record all their calls.)

While I agree with you that the do not call list SHOULD work, since they are not a legally operating firm, I am on it myself, the unfortunate fact is that the do not call directory applies to sales and telemarketing calls only.  Debt collectors are not bound by the same laws.  As I said, I am aware that this is not a LEGAL debt collector, but since they are calling under the guise of a debt collection agency, the do not call list does not apply here.

Okay guys I can tell you my story, but it's the same as all of yours. However, I did my research and this company needs to be stopped immediately! Everyone's suggestions are GREAT and I have done them all. But in addition, you need to do the following:

If you have deposited money into their account, please contact Bank of America at 1-800-432-1000. Follow the prompts (I did the voice command of Fraud, and spoke with a gentleman named Wesley). Wesley told me that if I had given them money, then they can start investigating for fraud and he can help me with that. If you did NOT deposit money (which I did not), then you can contact the Better Business Bureau. Spellman and Roman are on there out of Moncks Corner, SC and so far (as of today), the BBB reports that they are UNSATISFACTORY and have 2 or more complaints in which this company failed to respond. When you go to that site, there will be an orange button at the top of the page that says, "Check out a business or charity." Click on that button and then search for "Spellman and Roman" in the state of "SC." When you click the "search" button their company will appear first. The more people complain the faster we can get them out of business!

Someone stating to be Sidnei Roman left a message with my daughter that I am in trouble and for me to call them back. When I called they stated I had written a check through Wells Fargo at a Footlocker in 2003 which bounced and now Footlocker and Wells Fargo has hired this company to help collect this debt. They were asking me to pay them $68 to settle this account. I informed the party that I never resided at the address they were mentioning, neither did I ever have a checking account and nor did I ever shop at a Footlocker store. They said to hire and attorney to protect myself in that case as it will be submitted to State.

'Don't know who you are, but a grammar lesson and typing class should be your first path of action.  Going on line looking like a basket case does nothing for your mission.  I was just approached by some knuckle head folks who tried to collect on a debt already paid.  Grant you I was rattled at first, until I realized the bill had been paid years ago.  These were simply S & R folks trying to get rich and richer off other folks misery.  Get over yourself....

I got a call from an 877-6270413 ext. 4035 but I'm not sure its the same people.  I already paid them $150 and I supposively still owe them $250.  She said she would have someone come and arrest me here at work.  Did you get the same threatening message?

thank you so much for your information. yesterday I got a call from Jill Spellman from Spellman & Roman telling me that I was "wanted for questioning", "I am a person of interest" and I would be picked up for questioning today if I did not pay anything yesterday. this is in regard to some on-line pay day loans that I was not able to pay back. I ended up paying them $100 yesterday and promising to pay more Friday which I will not be doing!! I spent the evening sick to my stomach, barely able to speak to my children. I also couldn't sleep last night. I pictured myself arrested at work, going to jail. I honestly thought she was a lawyer from a law office and I truly believed her. I called a lawyer that I know and he said to tell them to go to "H" and they were just trying to scare me. I felt better after talking to him and feel even better now after reading all these e-mails.  These people are horrible! maybe I should stop payment on the $100 today?  the charge coming out is from Spellman & Roman- Busin Moncks Corner, SC

By all means, stop payment.  And then report these crooks to the law enforcement agencies listed in my messages above.

You can be sure you'll get a call back from these criminals after you stop payment; just tell them that you learned that they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement.  They'll swear and make all kinds of ridiculous false threats. Just ignore it and tell them that report them to the FBI and Secret Service each and every time they call.

Thank you very much for all the information that has been posted. I too was the latest victim. A Sidney Roman called me at my job yesterday and demanded to speak to me. She said that it was very important and that i needed to contact her immediately because i was wanted for questioning at her office. I was very skeptical about this and did some research online, first. Low and behold i found this forum and it opened my eyes! So what i did was, i turned the cards on them, i immediately called her back and started questioning her. She did not like that very much so she hung up the phone on me. I persisted in calling her and anyone i could get through to, I asked for her email address and they said that she does not have one set-up yet!!!!! Can you believe that! Well my ordeal ended about 60 - 70 phone calls later... lol ...yes i insisted! to the point where they would pickup and hang-up. I even called them from three and four different phone lines at the same time...I really gave them a hard time. they won't be bothering me anymore...but please, everyone, do research before you decide to call them and give your information out to these crooks. We should all unite and bring these people down for good! Thank you all for such great support...

i totally agree,these people harassed me and had all my info,i also filed with secret service,bank of america,fbi,attorney gernerals office,and other agencies whoever i could think of,i have been calling and leaving messages on their machines,its just like they put a gun to your head and robbed you,i have been praying that justice comes to them soon.

the probably is not paying debts,its being hustled out of money that is going into a lazy ass person who doesnt want to work, but take your money,God will deal with these people and whoever else is involved in it sounds like you are too taking up for them,no one is perfect but as a consumer we have rights when we fall short.
