I received a call from this company wanting to speak to a person responsible for my ex-husband's estate.  They would not give me any information as I told them we divorced in 1981.  I told them he left no estate.  What is the deal with these people?  I've seen from posts dating back 2 years that they have been trying to scam people all along.  Why are they still in business?  Who do you report them to?  I asked where they obtained my name and they said from some sort of search of related persons.  I originally posted this under another Ascension Point 888 number and didn't notice it.  So apparently, they call from several different numbers.

I received a called to today.  I said I was not comfortable speaking with them.   They had lots of info - how?  It is so hard to know who is legit and who is not.  It is hard enough me calling people regarding a death but to have others called regarding collections is stressful.  I hope not to receive any more calls.   Is there a way to protect oneself?

Received a call from 888-806-9074 on voice mail while attending my weekly PTSD meeting. Prior to reading all the scam posts I tried to call back and they just left their number to call them back. After reading these posts I will not attempt further contact. My wife of 50 yrs passed on Aug 6, 2010 and to my knowledge she had no debts outstanding. Why can't these scum leave people grieving alone????  Anyone knows how to report to local or state authorities to get this crap stopped?? Thanks all. V/R Jim Kelsey

I was told that they go thru credit reports that say "deceased" on them, that is how they get the information but they haven't been hired by anyone.  They are trying to collect on a credit card that my mother had insurance on and was paid off upon her passing, They would get the money and wouldn't have to forward it because the bank was already paid. Thank goodness the bank helped me out on figuring they were scamming me. Protect yourself by telling them that you don't know who is over the estate to quit calling, or you could always say they need to talk to your "make believe" relative who is a state police officer, or lawyer,   lol I don't understand how they can do this to people.

This number called my mother regarding a financial matter and wanting to speak with my deceased father. My mother and father have been divorced for 16 years, how would they have my mom's number? I just called it back and the woman was asking for an I.D. number, which of course I don't have and we have never received anything in the mail from these people. She asked me if I could give her info about my dad and I said hell no, and asked what it was regarding. She said she couldn't share any information with me, so I told her I wasnt telling her anything and said I would report her company. Then I hung up. Losing someone is really hard and when you have people like this, I'm livid.

Had a voice mail from this number yesterday.  They wanted to talk to the person handling my husband's deceased sister's estate.  After reading all posts, we won't be calling them.

this 'company' has left several messages regarding my deceased grandfather, who passed on 9/15/12.  He had exactly ONE credit card, which had insurance and is being processed, so I knew this wasn't legit even before looking up the number...These people are vultures, preying on the grieving, and I hope no one out there eats their farina....

I received a call from this number, they wanted to express condolences on my deceased husband, advising that he had an outstanding debt.  My husband is alive and well. This is definately a scam.

I'd like to try and shed some light on how the industry works.
When any lender is notified of the passsing of a debtor, they immediately close thier accounts and begin a process of discovery to determine if there is any estate they can pursue to collect the remaining debt.  Becuase this discovery process is anything but straightforward - lenders usually turn these accounts over to collection agencies that specialize in what is termed 'decedent debt'.

These agencies will send a letter to the last-known address of the deceased, then proceed to try and determine who the next-of-kin might be in an effort to determine who might be responsible for managing the affairs of the deceased.  Sometimes the next-of-kin may have already contacted the credit card company directly and paid the bills, and the messages got crossed in the mail.

What also may happen is that the person died without any debt, and their credit file never was updated to reflect that they are deceased. Then someone takes the deceased persons SSN and uses it to open a new credit account.  Then the family receives a phone call many years after the person died inquiring about a debt.

These poor people at Ascension Point. You see what happens is that if credit cards or other outstanding debts aren't paid (because sombody dies without leaving anything of significance or without an estate being opened) the creditors write off the debt and sell it to companies that buy debt. They get all relevant info with that debt such as debtors, address, family (if given as a reference), workplace, you name it. They then try to collect. Ascension Point is either one such company or works for one such company. They can't tell, or won't tell you who the creditor is. This is good question to ask: "how much did you pay for the debt?" Best is not to answer the phone, you are only going to get aggravated as the employees of Ascension Point are well trained and maintained robot-like humans.

My husband died in Oct.  I have called and reported his death to all credit card companies.  They closed and said no  individual is responsible for his debts.  He had no estate or assests and not to respond to collectors.  This is based on the Fair Debt Collections Practice Act.  This number has called 3 times a day since his death.  Credit card company said not to answer the calls.  Guess will have to change phone number.

I've been getting calls from this number as well as another number that has a female voice that talks forever on my answering machine. They're trying to reach the person authorized to discuss the financial matters of the late [mothers name].
My mom's been dead now 17 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And she had no debt when she died.

    IT'S A TOTAL SCAM!!!!!!!!!!
DON'T ANSWER IT.  Though my answering machine has been getting a daily call from this number as well as another number with a different reference number. 17 years after her death this just suddenly started. I won't give them the satisfaction of calling back to remove her name, cause then they'll know I'm still alive.

All of a sudden after 6 months these people have been calling us daily about my dead brother's estate.   Everything has been settled with the estate so they are at this point just harassing family members.  It ticks me off and I refuse to give them the time of day.   Very upsetting for all of us, especially my mother as his death was very sudden and unexpected.
