They called my son left a voice message about my deceased husband's estate, there was no estate.  Why did they call him instead of me, I told him to ignore the message as it was probably fake.

This company specializes in getting ahold of anyone they think might have some interest in the estate of a deceased person,  in an attempt to collect a debt the deceased might have owed.

In my opinion this is just  a legalized debt scam.

Fact is, depending on the state where the deceased died, payment of the deceased's debts is the duty of an executor or administrator.  And that's only if there are enough assets in the estate to pay them.

But this company doesn't care, they continually try to contact relatives of the deceased in an attempt to somehow (psychologically ) strong-arm the relative to pay the debts of the deceased even though the relative is not liable.

Sad to say, they make a lot of money and are quite successful financially doing this.

They sometimes use deception to make a person think he or she  IS responsible.  Don't fall for it.

I got not only a letter but a phone call for my sister's debt. They send out a letter making it LOOK like they actually represent a real creditor. But we are in probate and the creditor has not submitted a creditor claim. This place tried to send me something that appears to LOOK LIKE a creditor claim but it's NOT!! Don't fall for ANY of their tricks! I think they must be hoping I will give them some money so they can claim some percentage for debt collection.  But I don't need to do that as my sister had plenty of money to pay her creditors and they will all be paid in full.  I cannot believe the gall of this company combing through death notices and probate court notices. Incredible.

These calls are valid. Ascention Point is a collection agency used by various banks/credit card companies.

Once you contact your deceased relative's credit card companies to inform them of their passing, the CCCs assign the accounts to companies like Ascention Point, DCM, SIMM Associates, etc, in order to try to collect from the estate. Ascention Point (and the other companies) are informed of your relative's passing by the original creditor.

To the point of "legitimate collectors will mail first", I submit that you've likely never dealt with collectors, before. Having been on the wrong end of collections, in the past, being on the receiving end of these estate collectors' calls now, and having a relative that worked in the collection business, I can tell you that they will use any and all means to contact you, including calling you by phone, first...and since you likely gave your phone number to the actual creditor when you reported your loved one's passing, the collectors now have that information, as well, and will use it.

i have received numberous phone calls from the above phone number 555-806-9074  and I believe that they can't call you too many times a day under the florida law, then right after they call, an unknown phone number comes thru.  I lost my husband and I was only authorized signer therefore under the law, not responsible for any debts that he had.
I do not need this harassment.

My husband died about two weeks ago. I contacted all the credit card companies.  Within hours, these slimeballs called wanting to know about my husband's "estate".  "Did he leave a will?"  "Is it in probate?" "What was not jointly owned by you and your husband?"  Give no information to these people; they'll only use it against you. Volunteer nothing. The less they know, the better.

A lady by the name of Rachael called from #888-806-9074 (Ascention Point) she said she was calling about the deceased persons debt. Wanted to speak to the person who is responsible for dealing with the debt. The deceased person has no estate, owns nothing and has no money. Lived on social security check month to month. I guess I'll have to change landline phone number.

No, you need to send them a cease and desist letter by cetiified, return receipt us mail.  CWG40  has given you the information to do this, and here is what else you need to know:
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

My cell has been hammered several times a day by 888-806-9074 with no VM left. I looked the number up and it was connected to debt collection and since I'm behind on nothing I ignored them until I got sick of ignoring their calls. I finally broke down and called them back.

The Ascension Point representative asked me for a reference number and I said I haven't gotten any VM, just attempted calls. The rep paused and then indicated that by my CID number she was looking for someone who could discuss an estate of "The late Jennifer Norton". I simply told them they had the wrong number and she told me she'd remove me from "the list".

Thanks to all for posting. We never answer these calls. Don't know why they are calling because nobody has died in our family for 20 years! But-will never answer to find out.

Well, they called yet again.  I didn't answer, caller ID was "Toll Free Caller", but this time they left a message.  Message said he was calling from Ascencion Point, calling about "the late Mary <my last name>".  Mary is my wife's name, and she's very much alive.  So, either some other Mary has died and they're looking for someone to pester about her debts, or they're just looking to get me on the phone to tell them that they have the wrong number so they can pester me about something else.

I'm not going to call them back.

I am sorry to disappoint you all, but there is a real company called AscensionPoint Recovery Services that files legitimate claims against decedent's estates in the county where I do probate work.  Most are credit cards.  Once the credit card company is aware that a person has died, the status of the account changes and it is no longer processed as an active account and it stops accruing interest.  And many people who owe money die without any assets that need to be probated because they may pass by survivorship or through a living trust. Or they may have left little or no money.   So nothing goes through probate and there is no record of any executor or administrator.  But if people died with assets, then their legitimate debts are required to be paid before the estate can make payments to beneficiaries.  Sometimes the credit cards were dishonestly opened by a family member or a stranger, in which case they can be disputed.  That being said, the phone calls that you are getting may be an attempt to convince people who are not aware of their state laws regarding estates, whether solvent or insolvent, to pay without the company going through the proper channels.  The calls regarding people who are still alive may be because there is more than one person with that name and they are trying everyone.

    Really? Deceased people?

This company apparently has no shame. I got a message but all I could hear was someone clicking on their computer and then they hung up. My mother passed away a month ago but I am not responsible for her estate, and seeing that these ghouls are just digging graves, I'm not going to answer or call back. Gross. Just... gross.

They may be "legitimate"--but it does not give them and other deceased debt collectors the right to harass surviving family members over debts they are NOT legally responsible for.
