This is a company which tries to get relatives to pay for the debts of the deceased. Of course, only the Executor of the estate of the deceased is responsible for paying lawful debts and in most states, the probate proceedings are required to be put in newspaper notices of the probate, so that creditors can make proper claims. If the creditor did not make a claim during the statutory period, then the creditor is entitled to nothing. If there was no estate, the creditor is entitled to nothing. They can't hold the relative responsible for unpaid debts of the decedent. Period.
This is an outrageous scam, because it relies on the feelings of the relatives of the decedent to make good on the debts ,since there is no legal way for the collection company to enforce what they want in the courts.
Don't talk to these people. Block their calls.
Make a complaint to your local state attorney general. Their collection practices are deceitful at best. - CWG40 replies to Randy WieckThey may harvest death certificates and get the person named in the certificate as a relative of some kind. You can Google anyone's name and find possible relatives. And of course finding numbers is no problem these days. If they have the death certificate all they have to do is run a decedent check on the probate records in the county where the deceased died. But apparently they don't do very good record checking. If the decedent had no estate, then the creditors are out of luck. They should know this. But I think they are basically scamming and playing on the emotions of survivors.
They called me about my brother's timeshare charges. Told 'em by poor pro didn't have anything when he died. They hung up. - CWG40 replies to Bob's relativeIf they knew the decedent's name, then all they had to do was check the local county probate records. If there's no probate, there's no executor and in any event, there's no way you could be held responsible for his debts. So there's no reason to bother you. They should know this.
They're just scammers, basically. - New WidowAfter reading through the posts, I believe the letter I received a couple of months ago was in fact from the same place that is now calling me daily - 888-806-9074. The letter sent was vague and it would have been well before I had notified credit card debtors of my husband's death and also well before anything would have been even just 30 days late (yes, they mailed me within about 45 days of his death). He had 2 student loans that I did work on having forgiven right away but the only other thing (with a balance) was a Sears credit card that was not late. I just have to assume that this company has some way to research recent deaths and immediately swoop in to try to get anything they can get. I've done a lot of reading since my husband passed away and have seen many reports of these kind of collectors and that they are paid very well for ANY type of collection they can obtain. I imagine they hope to reach someone who has life insurance money and is willing to pay anything to make the calls stop. Unfortunately, like most young couples, my husband and I were ill prepared for an early death and you can't squeeze blood out of a turnip, my friends. I would follow the advise of previous listers and request these folks remove you from their calling list and do NOT furnish any information as to who is the "executor" of your estate (or non existing estate in my case!)

- daughter-in-lawGeorgette Barry called from 888-806-9073 x.3734. She was calling on an "estate and probate matter."
Obviously she had no clue who to speak with as she asked for "the person in charge of handling the late (father in law's name here)."
I did research and the company, Ascension Point (http://ascensionpoint.com), has been reported to the Better Business Bureau several times even though the company pays their dues in order to remove or contest negative ratings.
At a time like this, no one needs to be bothered. Phone calls are hard to take even if they are from intended loved ones.
Thank you to everyone who has posted and helped to warn us about this "debt collector" under the name of "Ascension Point" --

- MillerYay for Google. Ascension Point has been calling quite often. After reading the blog I now know why. My Mom died in February. But I hadn't spoken to her in 5 years. I have nothing to do with her estate. I have not and will not call these people back now that I know it's a scam. FYI the new Samsung S4 has a feature to reject #'s. I've added this phone # to the reject list.

- I got 1 tooJust rec'd a call from a lady from this same number who said she was from ascention point and our phone call was being recorded. She said it was about a late person I have never heard of (last name began with a L). I asked her how she got my number and she said it was on her file. I told her I never heard of this person and she said she would remove my number and hung up. Since there is enough complaints about these types of calls why can't the police go after them?

- Concerned CitizenI received the same call from Ascencion today with the (888) 806-9074 number. The lady was polite as she tried to coax certain information out of me regarding my wife's passing. When I refused to give out the information, she replied that she understood and that I should be getting something in the mail soon. I am thankful I searched on this number and landed here. I will not be giving them any information.

- Chris replies to dennisMy sister got a call from this number today, and without thinking she gave them my phone number. Within minutes they called me. I was at work and didn't get the phone call until after she came to my job and told me about them.
I was being harrassed by a scam guy once who told me he didn't care if I was on the no call list, and that I was lying to him (I was not, but I also was not giving him information that IF he was who he said, he should have already had) and challanged me to call the FBI on him but he was going to call me repeatedly, every day, all day until I gave him the answers he wanted. So, I pay $5 a month for a service that when the call comes in (his was always 1 number shy of a real number so no way to report it to the BBB) you could send it to voicemail, and after that I'm now given the option to "black list" the number. If I choose to do so, anytime that number calls my phone an automated message comes up saying that my number has been disconnected. It's great. I finally got him and the calls stopped. The app is called Trap Call. I highly recommend everyone check this out. It saved me tons of aggrevation over the last year. - Chris replies to LindaDon't change your number! Go to the app store on your phone and look up Trap Call. I paid $5 a month for about 4 months and stopped a scam guy who was calling me 8 to 10 times a day, encouraged me to call the FBI because there was only 3 numbers at the end of his phone number so there was no way to report him. He said he was calling from my insurance company and wanted to verify some info, but he wanted me to give him the info so HE could verify that I was telling the truth. I knew it was a scam because at the time I did not have insurance, and one time I told him this and he called me a liar. So I found Trap Call. You can "trap" the caller and the number can, at that point be put on a 'black list,' which then will give an automated message to the caller that your number has been disconnected. Don't let these people cause you to change your number... use Trap Call and black list them.
- J. SabbaghI received several calls & messages from this company. They wanted to talk to someone who could act on behalf of my 'deceased' husband. Fortunately my husband is not deceased. When I called the number back they wanted more information on my husband to verify they were contacting the right person. I began asking them questions instead of answering theirs. It was apparent they were trying to extort money from me and I didn't back down.
DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE ANY INFORMATION!!! Total scam and should be ashamed of themselves for praying on unsuspecting citizens and those who are grieving.- Caller: Ascension Point Collection Agency

- Grandma RThey called my son left a voice message about my deceased husband's estate, there was no estate. Why did they call him instead of me, I told him to ignore the message as it was probably fake.
