Here's the deal with this company, folks - they are NOT LICENSED to colelct any debt in the United States. And I am pretty sure they are not licensed in most of the provences of Canada. They routinely violate the Fair Debt Collection laws of both countries with threats of court and jail, refusal to disclose debtors names and refusal to send out debt validations.

When these crooks call, do not buy into their threats. Simply ask that they mail you a debt verification letter stating the name of the debtor, account number and amount. I will tell you this - the moment you request this, the "lawyer" will get very rude and belligerent and ramp up the threats. Side note: they call claim to be lawyers but only one employee is, and he never calls. Anyway - I can tell you from personal experience they will NEVER file a single claim on you. I have been waiting almost 2 years to be taken to court - nothing.

You will never get a debt verification letter from them since they are unlicensed to collect debt. They know that is they send one, any state Attorney General will sue them for operating without a license. So no feas in that. Part two - all they debt they try and collect is junk debt they have purchased. None of it is valid. They make claims to the contrary ("we don't buy junk debt" with no proof), when all over the internet there is proof that they do.

Bottom line - this company is the lowest of the low. They go by three names - "Paul Kupferstein and Associates", "Liability Solutions" and "The Law Office" - they seem to use "The Law Office" the most in an attempt to scare the people they are extorting. Also, they have "changed" their phone number (it now displays (905) 474-2217 at the Liability Solutions website), but they seem to call from this one number more. Also, most people seem to get calls from a "Juan David" or a "Steve Sargent". All total, there are 4 reps that call to try and rip you off. It seems that Juan and Steve are either the worst of the two, or the names they all use.

Again - do NOT fall for their illegal activities and threats. You can read long discussions about and with employees of this company (gotta love their total lack of backup to their claims) in either of these threads:

I was called by Paul Cooperstein & Associates from Ontario Canada
#905-474-3535 regarding an unpaid contested phone bill.  We don't have any contested phone bills, and all our bills/debts are either paid or being paid.  I called our phone company & they agreed we were paid in full.  We had a few 900 number calls on our phone bill about 6 months ago and the phone company removed them after we advised them we hadn't made those calls.  Then we get this call from Paul Cooperstein & Associates saying we owe money or the sheriff will be arriving at our door and we'll be sued.  I tried to get some information out of the man who called regarding this "debt" but all he did was shout threats at me.  I told him he was incorrect and insisted he provide me with some other information regarding this "debt".  He just shouted louder with more threats and provided nothing by way of factual information.
He hung up on me after telling me to expect the sheriff on my doorstep. I checked online and discovered this is a HUGE scam.  If you do owe someone money, check with them.  This is not the manner in which debt is collected, unless the collector is lining his own pockets.  And someone shouting threats about the sheriff and going to court should be a clear indication that this is not a legitimate collection agency.  NEVER SEND MONEY TO ANYONE without first obtaining verification of the debt that is owed.  If the "collector" refuses to send you anything on paper, then it is a scam.  Always error on the side of precaution.  Protect yourself first.  Never send money blindly to anyone!

Claimed to be calling from a lawyers office regarding a legal action.  When asked to define the action they immediately said not to worry.   Isn't there some law about misrepresentation?  If so, I think that maybe  a charge could be laid.

This individual named Mr.Cagna called harasing my wife stating that she owes for a payday loan which she never did. This person is continually calling and threatning her. I am contacting the upper law society of canada to report this supposed lawyer or paralegal. I am also calling the Police. He also falsely represented himself to her mother to find out her phone number stating that he was a lawyer.

I got calls from my family and friends saying that mr. Sergeant from the law offices called and that i was being charged with fraud and that they need to get a hold of me immediately.  I called mr. sergeant and told him the case file number that was left with my friend and he said it did not exist.  he could not look me up by name but only by my friends phone number.  I said this is not a law office and that if he called anyone again and told them that i was being charged with fraud, he would have a law suit on his hands.  He told me that I would be recieving papers in the mail and he would see me in jail and he told me that if I want to mouth off to him I can go to hell...then he hung up on me.   He did not even have my phone number or address to send the papers to me and I thought this was odd behavior, so I googled their phone number and this is what I found.  Thank you to whoever started this site because it was very helpful to learn about them.  How do they stay in business this is what I want to know!! I do not want them calling my work as I see they have done to others on here.  I think I am most upset about the fact that my personal information has been sold to these creeps and this is a form of harassment to call my family and friends and say such a terrible thing like this!  How do we stop this?  What if I had been afraid and it worked and I sent the money?  This is such a violation in so many ways!!!

I got a call from Mr.Sergeant and he said that his law firm were filling a law suit aganist me for a pay day loan that is outstanding and that the law firm were going to freeze all bank accounts with my name on them and that I was being charged with fraud and it would stay on my credit history for 6 yrs and I wouldn't be able to obtain any credit for that 6 yrs. This guy was so rude and wouldn't explain what was going on and then he asked me why I didn't pay back the loan and when I started telling me my situation he got really rude and hung up. Well I called right back to find out what I had to do to avoid court and he wouldn't let me the amount that I owed he started to tell me that I was going to be responsible for the companies legal fees totally $1500.00 +. He wouldn't give me the address he told me to call back before noon the next day to find out where to send the money and I was very scared and worried as I've never been in trouble with the law before. But after doing this research I've found that I'm not alone wiht dealing with these type of "Bottom Feeders".

I received a call that showed up on my phone "Law Office" I answered the phone and this guy said he was david sargeant from paul kupferstein and associates stating that I have 24 hours to pay an excessive amount of money to a debt I owe to the cash store. And if I don't they were going to follow through with legal action on fraud charges. This caught me off guard. As I know this company had already received my payment, It kind of made me nervous..so i called this number back and a lady answered (905-474-3535) and passed the phone to a guy,,i told him I don't understand why he is calling me and that I was going to go into the cash store and ask them why this is happening...he immediately told me that the company told him If i attempt to go into their location...that I would be charged with harrassment..I found this weird..they say I owe them money but If i talk to them about it then I will be charged with harassment?? and the amount he is asking for is quite a large amount..I do sometimes get a little "mouthy" on the phone...and when I was questioning him about the amount....etc....he hung up on me...not once but twice after I called him back.....then I tried to do an internet search both on the name and number....and got quite alot of information back....even postings about the same company he is apparently collecting for...and the name...so
    I don't know?????
is this phone call legit...or should I make a call to my local police department????

I received a voice mail from someone named Rick David saying that he's from the law offices of ????? (I couldn't understand the company name) and that he was calling about an urgent legal matter and that I should call back immediately. He said to call 905-474-3535. I decided to google the number to see who they were and found all these websites with complaints. The only loan I have is a student loan and I have been paying that back monthly. If he's going to threaten legal action, I would expect to see documentation. I have no desire to deal with people that shout and make obscene threats over the phone. I'm going to call them to see what this is about. But, if they get belligerent, I will hang up and make complaints to the appropriate parties.

Scammers!! They claim to want to collect a debt, this scam has been running since 2005. They Called today and left a message for my dad about a legal matter, from Mr Hazel with Paul Kupferstein & Associates law frim, case # and that he must call back immediately. I was not home so my dad called back but Mr. Hazel was out of the office so the nice lady asked my dad for his name and phone number and case number the strange thing was why did they want his name and number when they where the ones who called him. When i got home this afternoon my dad told me about this, I listen to the message and it sounds like the guy was reading from a script and just added my dad's name in the script.

So I googled the phone # and i got a lot of hits for the phone # 1-905-474-3535 and the Name Paul Kuperstein & Associates, Mr David, Mr Sargent. They call from three different places Paul Kupferstein/Liability Solutions and The Law Office. Mr Hazel did return my dad's call we did not answer it now knowing that this is a scam.
    Please Note:
    1. If you have a outstanding amount owed you would know as most credit card companies or stores would call you a few times and ask when you are going to pay your bill ect...
    2. Most credit card companies will send you a letter saying your account has now been handed over to a Collection Agency. And in Canada i'm not sure if Collection Agencies have to be registered to collect debt.
3.When a case is filed in Canadian Courts, you are sent out offical documentation with the courts stamps (seal of approval), official signatures and furthermore, a court date is given that you are to appear and it will state what company filed the claim.
    4. If you don't have proof of the debt and you can't tell me who it is, can't tell me a reference id, can't tell me anything about it, except this EXTRAVAGANT amount that I owe "someone" and I have to pay through you, or you will take me to court and send me to jail.
    5. No legitimate Law frim would be written up as much as this collection agency is IF they operated legitimately. and i can't even find a website for this so called Paul Kupferstein & Associates law frim.
Thats my two Cents on this matter.

I received a message on my answering machine from a Mr Canga on Monday Nov 26/07 advising me of a pending investigation against me and to avoid any legal litigation against myself I needed to call 905-474-3535.  I called the number and provided the file # which had been left on my answering machine and spoke to someone who introduced himself as Mr Cagna.  He advised me that I needed to pay $810.00 immediately to them for a debt from National Cash and if I did not have it paid by 10:00 AM the following morning I would be served court papers at my place of employment and if the matter went to court it would cost me $1800.00.  I informed this Mr Cagna that the loan from  National Cash was $200.00 and that I paid back 385.08 to them and therefore owed nothing.  Mr Cagna went on to inform me that since I defaulted on my first payment to National Cash that I somehow agreed to being billed in this manner and that I should have read the contract I signed.  I asked for their business address which he advised me is 620 Alden Road suite 620, Markham, ON. Needless to say I got worried and decided to google Paul Kupferstein and Associates and then went to 411 to inquire about the number.  Once finding this site I called back to speak with them and informed them I was aware of their scam and that I was aware that several reports have been made to the Better Business Bureau about this so called firm (by the way they have several addresses they use as well as change business names).  Mr Canga got very rude to me and informed me that they have been in business for 9 years and demanded that he speak to my lawyer.  I told him I did not have a lawyer and he would need to speak to me at which time he told me that he was unable to discuss the investigation and that they had in their office.  For anyone reading this please do your homework on this shady operation and if you owe money to anyone you will receive a bill from a reputable collection agency in the mail advising of the amount owing and to whom.  Please don't fall victim to this scam and report the call to the creditor they state they are claiming for, the Better Business Bureau and the FTC.  The more documented complaints there are against Paul Kupferstein and Assocaites the better the chance to shut them down and to have them criminally charged for their scam.  I am taking this one step further and reporting this to the media.

my fiance and i, who both had loans at the Cash Store, were also called within an hour of each other by Mr. David.  He called my parents, and her aunt.  Only because he called the both of us claiming lawsuits so close togther did we suspect that he was not on the level.  When we went online to find further information about "The Law Office", we found only sites like this one with people who have been victimized by these people.  Thank you for putting this information online...we left a message at "The Law Office" telling Mr. David that we were aware of his organization and their motivations and tactics, and we will NOT be answering any calls from this number now or ever.  Also...my parents and my fiance's aunt were made aware of the situation, and we will be contacting our local RCMP.

I received a call from Mr. Seargent this afternoon with regards to my ex-boyfriends payday loan.  I immediately contacted him and together we worked on settling this matter.. during the telephone conversation my ex made to him to get the information on where to send the payment, red-flags went up all around me! No company name other than law offices, no proff of the debt amount to fax (as it was triple the original borrowed amount), threats of a visit from the sherrif, lawsuits, even an extra 2000 dollars to be added on to the already doubled amount, and most bizarre of all to me was the strict payment options of money order or certified cheque only (come on, what legit law organization especially collections doesn't have account numbers or banking options)
OMG am I ever thankful for forums such as these.. It's nearly xmas and I would hate to see anyone get caught up in a mess like this. (even if it is my ex haha)
I'm anxious to see what kind of a reaction i'll get in the morning when Sargent calls back for the tracking number of the money order that he expects to receive, only to be greated with at least 2 urls and 85 pages of threads exposing his scam. whoo hoo
    Merry Christmas all!!

Additional name to add to the list.. Paul Kupferstein Intrust was given to me today for the name on a money order to be sent out... interesting note though was how he repeated the spelling of Kupferstein three times to misspell the ending as "een" rather then "ein".. when i googled it the suggested spelling correction brought me here.. I guess the intent was to avoid being easily connected to these pages, yet still be able to cash the M.O with such a minor difference.. meh, no idea just extremely grateful for intuition and great webmasters ;)
