Received a call from just "1" and Caller ID "Unavailable" on our house phone a few minutes ago. We have been receiving calls like this for days. So, out of curiosity I picked up. When I said "Hello," a young man's voice came on the line. He was calling for the Republican political party. [So, here's the deal, why is the calling # spoofed as just "1" and why is the proper caller ID not given?] He started thanking me for my support. I interruped that I did not support that political party and told him to remove our phone # from the calling list. No matter what the political affiliation of the calling organization, I don't like deception. This call was deceptive. Period.

Since it was a spoofed caller ID, I'm wondering if it was a scam where they were trying to get you to donate to the Republican Party but really just wanted your credit card info.

I never answer a call from a number with too many or not enough digits.  Someone spoofed their caller ID with the number you mentioned.  I smell a scam when a number like that pops up.  Unknown number or ones marked as not available I answer not!  Not being paranoid just common sense.

Sounds like a fax machine to me.  I have received a call from a number I did not recognize, it left a series of beeps in the voice mall.  Called it back and got a modem sound, so it sounds like a fax machine is calling you.

that is an old scam, in the usa there are plenty of people with the same name , first and last and sometimes even the 1st last and middle, I have 2 cousins with the same name and got a call ;the guy said i owed $978. for some bank aquisition <sp> account, one cousin same name   has a dad that is an attorney, so thats why they call me and then sent me a statement saying i owed $978. the bank didn't have an address or phone number just that it was in st louis mo, the collector was calling from new mexico so I called the nm attorney general and they said it was a scam and not to pay them a dime, i asked can i tell them the attorney general of nm said not to pay and she said yes, so next time they called i told them that. and the guy was like i thought for sure you were going to pay this debt you owe, i said if i owed it i would pay it, give me the phone number of the bank that you say i owe and he wouldn't so i repeated what the ag nm office said and i didn't hear anything for about a year when they tried it again, used same message

I got 7 calls so far this day from scammers, and four of the times the phone never rang - phone logs show the calls were only 4 seconds long. I think that means the caller hung up before the system began ringing my phone.

Makes me wonder if those very short calls were trying to make money off of dip fees, where they had no intention of actually talking to anyone.

Three of the calls came in with CNAM "1" and one said "Unavailable"

And with old fax machines the user had to dial the number to make the call. The oldest fax machines had telephone handsets to a person could talk to someone before sending the fax. Later fax machines have a dialer pad but do not have a phone handset, although many had a jack for a telephone to be plugged into the machine. I had a lot of documents to fax to an insurance company in 2003 and I dialed every time manually. It's easy to misdial.

Why don't you stop copying my name first, ignorant idiot.
You sound like an incestuous waste product who is fugly to boot.
Unavailable numbers come from scammers. No one named "John" is calling you with normal intentions.
