I am receiving fax calls from "Unavailable" or "Private" with a caller id number of " = " on one display and what looks like a question mark on another. Since I do not have a fax on the line, I cannot find out who is calling. Anyone out there with any advice/comments/suggestions?

It is possible that it is a wrong number, and most fax machines will redial every few minutes for 10 or 20 tries, in case the fax they are calling is busy. If it happens a lot, contact your phone provider to see what they can do. I have "anonymous call rejection", if you call me without Calling Line ID info, you get a message "this party does not accept blocked calls, to forward your phone number and complete the call, please press 1". So unless the caller presses 1 and sends me his phone number, my phone does not ring. That may take care of the problem for you.

You may be unlucky enough to have a number similar to a valid fax, and people are just clumsy when they dial. For example your phone may end in -4317, and -3417 might be a valid fax.

This person "Michelle" called with an accent & I couldn’t fully understand what she was saying. (caller ID said private #) She was from CBV Collections & that I owed X bank over $2k & was demanding payment & knew my address & name.  She wanted me to confirm my date of birth & SIN number.  I knew that you should NEVER give out your SIN number so I asked her to confirm her name & company name & she started yelling at me, I asked her to calm down & that she was upsetting me & she didn't so I hung up.

She called back but I didn't answer & she told me it was a criminal offence hanging up on a Collections agency & to call her back at this number.  So I did & she yelled some more so I hung up.  The company she says she is from does have a website, but not her #.  I know thtat fraud websites that are “fronts” can go up in a day, so I was cautious.   I called the # on the website & to see if this was legit, & was bounced around to a few ethnic sounding names with thick accents, & spoke to "a guy named Beshera (something like that) who was also rude to me saying they were going to come to my house & needed to be paid today.  I advised them they had the wrong person as I do not owe any money to anyone & could I have the contact information to the company that I apparently owed money to & he said "why do you want that, you don't believe me, you think this is a scam from the Philippines or that this is a strip mall?" & I said nope, but if I do indeed owe this bank money that I will deal with them directly.  He yelled some more telling me that their lawyers would deal with me & I would be put in jail, so I hung up went to the bank & had them do a search on me.  I was fine, so now I am reporting this to the Bank's compliance department, the police & the Better Business bureau & will post this anywhere I can to stop them doing this to others.  I didn't fall for it, but with their scare tactics others will

I keep getting phone calls from someone saying they are from Microsoft and there is a problem with my computer.  The real laugh here is that the ID shows the call from a PAY PHONE.

    Payback
I don't care if the frauds get paid or not, they are fighting a losing battle. I challenged these weaklings to call me for a 100 years. I don't want them to pay attention to anything other than their computer screens. They deserve no food, no sleep, nothing. The difference between them and us is that we are free and they are stuck in their boiler rooms trying to put their misery on others :-)

I got the call and hit 1 to speak to someone. It was an insurance company and would not tell me how they got my name and number. With a thick Indian accent, and speaking very fast, I was told they could help me with my insurance costs. When I told them I didn't have auto insurance, he became very confused and tried to tell me about home insurance. I hung up and called my provider to register these idiots as a phishing company.

Didn't answer.  This is just the same ole call I get regularly from "Unavailable".  Caller I.D. says " 1 ".
I'm sure it was a scam.  Other calls I DID answer over the months from " 1 ", were scams, trying to get
personal info from me.  My favorite is the computer scam.  I recently played a game when they said my Windows computer was infected with a virus.  I kept saying, "Really? How can that be?  OMG!"  Then after I play around long enough, I tell them I don't have a Windows  Computer.  I have a Mac.

    LMAO!

How droll .... and misspelled .... and miscounted. I see only two steps in your lack-of-action plan. Why don't we make it a single step .... Cancel all phone service. "Doesn't Own Phone Anymore" can be your new name. Then we can all emulate your brilliant example and this entire website can be mothballed. The End.

Dear Resident 47: The best defense against spam/scam/phishing calls and junk e-mails, too, is to educate yourself, your family (especially seniors), and everyone else you can about these "invasions of our privacy". You are here at 800notes, where there is plenty of good advice about how to protect your "peace off mind", by recognizing these horrible intrusions for what they are. Good luck.

You're preaching to the choir, fka Cherryl. The telephone is a poor weapon against the better informed. Unlike Mister Block-Ignore up there, I *want* to know who is abusing my phone lines and why. Silencing the noise is not the same as killing off its source or thinning the pool of potential victims.
