Hi I was talking to one of the reps, Chris Lismore and we have talked many times. I am about to sign on the dotted line today. However, his office is in the same province that I live in (Canada) and its about 1 hr from where i live. So how do you explain that?
I am very concerned as the more I read about the experiences, the worse it seems. I mentioned this bad publicity to Chris and he says no one understands the program. Its a simple program. He said that if his company was a scam that the lawyer, Sheila Cockburn would be struck from the bar. That is a good point. I am concerned and not sure what to do.
Hmmmm, first they say no one understands the "program", and then they say it's a simple "program". Do you understand the concept of cognitive dissonance? Scammers do!
} no one understands the program. Its a simple program.
So simple that only the authors can understand it? Contracts found to be vague and confusing are interpreted *against* the ninnies who wrote it. At least that's how an American judge handles that dispute. If nobody can comprehend or appreciate the hidden beauty of a S&L/C&A contract, maybe no one should sign it?
} He said that if his company was a scam that the lawyer, Sheila Cockburn would be struck from the bar. That is a good point.
Yes, a great *talking* point. You mean Canada shows zero tolerance for crooked lawyers? Lines 'em up and shoots them with blindfolds on? This nation sounds better all the time .....
You're so right, I should try only to make relevant responses like yours, in which you tell people who disagree to "get a life", "try getting a girlfriend and go to a party", "get a real job", and lob various insulting terms. Then cry about "injurious slander" when you mean "libel".
You feel very strongly that all scammers in Canada are found and punished before they can blink twice. Wow, how soon can I get my passport and move in? Your consumer affairs agencies might as well disband next week for want of anyone to fine or prosecute.
} [Rhode] is a complete scam...he slanders other companies
The MyVesta C&D was for alleged failure to pay a state license fee, the need for which was apparently much in doubt due to the company's exempt status per statute. It says nothing of the company's practices or performance and does not claim MyVesta committed any fraud. The company would *voluntarily* close and liquidate five years later. By your logic, it could never have scammed anyone since nobody tried to force its closure.
} your telling me MBNA Bank who brough TD Bank who was suffering from bad publicity?
No. Try reading more slowly. Also, "brough" is an obsolete word.
} Where the hell are you getting your information?
I'm not "getting" anything. I've examined the materials provided by Silver-[***]-Whatever and found them wanting. I've said as much repeatedly.
} If I am hurting your own little home made business offering debt help
Now who's relying on assumptions? Besides, there's no money in real debt "fixing", only in selling debtors a "fix" which makes them poorer.
} Again you can't answer a question. ... how can you explain ... clients accounts get their debts settled?
I cannot explain what I cannot believe. You would otherwise have me explain a rainbow to a blind man, another stupid lawyer trick.
} majority of the reviews are completely distorted, competitors posing as burnt customers
Yes, yes, the "competing saboteurs" position. Next it will be "disgruntled employees". Fine, let's wipe the slate of anonymous comments. The S&L agreement I saw is frankly hazardous to a debtor's health. The program it outlines amounts to collecting an advance fee for debt "relief" which will never come. This was outlawed in America for good reasons over two years ago. It's high time Canada took the hint.
} It has a period at the end so it is a valid sentence.
I see. I'll pass this along to my librarian and English major pals the next time I make a fridge magnet poem from random words.
all of you people are idiots!! i actually enrollled with S&L Law 2 years ago and settled my 25k in debt. there were no scams or lies. i went to Kitchener, ON and sat down with my representative. this is a active functioning busy Law Firm. I called the law society before i signed ANY document, they told me everything i needed to know. the bottom line is people are stupid and lazy, and do not know how to read. there was alot of work i had to do on my behalf then i can assure you none of you morons did. i had letters provided to me from Silverthorne that i had to sign and send to my creditors, once i did this the phone calls stopped and i couldnt have been happier. my first account was settled after 1 year an 2 months, i finish my 36 month program in 28 months. THANKS YOU S&L LAW!! i recommend you dont believe everything you read.
These guys called me over a dozen times from 416-800-1772. I asked who they are and they told me "Canada Debt Solutions" at "canadadebtsolutions.net" (I called this company and they say they have nothing to do with these telemarketers). So I played along the next time these telemarketers called and was transfered to one of their sales guys. He told me that they are "Debt Help Plan" at debthelpplan.com. I told him that's not coming up as a real company name. Who are you really?
So he finally tells me that we works for "Cockburn & Associates" at "clegal.ca". Why are they hiding behind all these different names? So I did some more digging. Turns out the U.S. government has banned this kind of business in the U.S. and a bunch of provinces have banned it too. The Canadian government even publicly warns people that this kind of "service" typically leaves people far worse off financially with more debt and less money: http://www.fcac-acfc.gc.ca/eng/resources/cons ... p?postingId=393
These companies were not banned. The were regulated. They still can do debt settlement, However the laws changed. The companies that were not reputable, closed up shop, or were forced to close up shop.
No more up front fee's can be collected, they must perform before they even get paid. So if they do not get a settlement, they CANNOT collect any fee. This is protection from the programs that are called, "Front loader programs". Also they can only collect a certain fee amount. I think, in Manitoba, if a person uses debt settlement, the company can only collect a 10% fee, and they are not allowed to collect up front fees..
If someone knows more about this, please add to this.
Again, They are not "BANNED", they are regulated.
HUGE DIFFERENCE!

I have read all of these posts and most look like ex employees or other people in the debt industry, i know for a 100% fact that The Law Office of Cockburn & Associate LLP is a REAL LAW FIRM and Shelia Cockburn is registered with the Law Society of Upper Canada licensed to practice law in Canada. She has no complaints registered against her with the law society and they have a B+ rating with the BBB, this is public information you people are real ignorant if you believe people like this trying to get revenge...its pathetic. go get a job [***]!!
Therefore a real attorney who paid a real registration fee and hung a real law degree on a real wall in a real office within a real building is absolutely incapable of behaving in a devious or fraudulent manner. Is that the logic we're to repeatedly allow to supplant volumes of client complaints and the plain reading of the Silverthorn/Cockburn contract?
Instantly everyone with a dissenting opinion is one of the mysterious "disgruntled employees" or sabotaging competitors or moronic spendthrifts who forever want "the easy way out". That's how the rest of the song goes. If you shills would all agree to stop singing it we could end this thread right now.
Yeah, the triple-B, another radiant beacon of trust. A prank listing for terrorist group Hamas once scored an "A" with its membership payment. Is Sheila too cheap to buy a better grade than thugs with military weapons?
Is the BBB real????????????????????????????????????? L M F A O
Along with the Easter bunny!!!!!!
I am not an ex employee, I am a person who hates credit card companies!!!
Here is a simple fact..If credit card companies actually lowered their interest rates, started actually being some what more kind to these clients, we would have ZERO need for REAL LAW FIRMS like this...
But if you are actually silly enough to believe that the BBB is real...I have a bridge I want to sell you!!!
thank you i actually have not done anything with them, they started to ask me what i owed and they told me in 12 mins that i have to pay 265 a month to be out of debt in 3 years so im glad i read this before i went on with it ..
THANK YOU EVERYONE!

I called Cockburn & Assoc in October 2012, on November 15, 2012 they took their first payment from my Bank Account. Then I got really scared!!! So I called 4Pillars Debt Relief and signed with them. I cancelled my dealings with Cockburn & Associates immediately. Closed my bank account so they couldn't get another dime. I have since had my debt settled and am making LOWER monthly payments than the first one the Jerks at C & A took. BUT, the problem is now they keep calling me....at home, at work.....at the hospital. Any time of the day. Email too! Geez don't these guys ever give up. And they all sound like kids on the phone. If you are scared of this company, you ought to be. Get out.....stop payments at the bank - change your banking institute and seek help from a REPUTABLE Debt Settlement Firm. If you have a Deliotte and Touche near you contact them. They can help. Good Luck everyone!
How did you cancel with Cockburn & Associates? No one returns my calls or answers my emails......The american I spoke to said she would send me a 'Notice of Cancellation' to sign, then emailed telling me to go to the website, and it's nothing but advertising.....
