Caller ID said "US Government", which is why I picked up. I had just applied for SS benefits online, and the application stated that someone may be calling to follow up on that. So "Mr. McCall" said the call was in regard to my recent application, and I believed that. How would he know otherwise? He never asked for my social. Then he asked me if my husband, who he knew was eligible for benefits, was going to apply, and I said "not yet", and he told me he was eligible to collect an amount of half my benefits. Free money! Well, he wasn't home, so he asked me to have him call back. I came here to check it out and found many different viewpoints. I am normally very skeptical, but this really seemed valid. I am confused. And we did not call him back.

Go to the official Social Security Administration website, find the number you need to contact them and do so. Do not call this number.

Not true. When I applied for benefits, they made a point of telling me they would call if they had questions about my application. It's the IRS who says they don't call.

The call from s call center even though the guy claims to call early in morning per VM. I’m not giving him the time of the day.  This is yet another bogus call to get information SS office knows my income Medicare has my bank account to withdraw the monthly bill. Nothing but scam

This number has called twice this week and it's a fax. Just the annoying fax screeching sound.

I’ve always been told the that the Social Security office doesn’t call people they send letters. I get calls from them to and they never leave a msg. They even call on Sat. What government office works on Saturday.

Called at 10:20 this morning, Saturday. May have left a voicemail, but I haven;t done voicemail in years. I had been googling some stuff about social security and taxes so I assume that's where they got the number. I don't believe it's legitimately the SSA because they don't call, they snail mail everything, and it's a Saturday when the SSA is only answering questions (maybe, depending on staffing) not calling people. Plonk!

Received a call that claimed it was Social Security Administration and that my SSN / Benefits would be canceled if I didn't respond immediately... I pressed number 1 to deliver my strongest statements of displeasure at this attempted fraud scheme.  The call disconnected.  The number, when dialed answers as Social Security.  Someone has cloned their number and info for this scam.

"Spoofed" not "cloned". Definitely a scam, though, since the Social Security Administration doesn't initiate contact by phone but by US mail.

Got a call at my work phone from 1-410-965-1234 with caller ID "US GOVERNMENT." Seeing that caller ID threw an immediate red flag (yes, I'm naturally skeptical) because I've never communicated with any government agency from that phone nor given that number out. A quick glance at the number with a highly unlikely "1234" suffix made me send them to VM.

Listened to a 14 second long VM of alien-like sounds - not the steady beep of a FAX misdirected to a phone or any human voice. Maybe the caller's prerecorded message machine is on the fritz, but all I got was distorted sounds - think Jimi Hendrix at the '67 Monterrey Pop Festival. Needless to say they won't be getting a call back.

The posters who said something on the order of "it's definitely the Social Security Administration" or other government office, you are probably the people making these calls trying to legitimize your illegal misdeeds.

If you're genuinely concerned it may the SSA calling about something important, I would highly recommend calling their national toll free number, 1-800-772-1213, and speak with an agent there to find out if they called you. But remember almost anything important is usually taken care of via postal mail unless you've specifically requested to be called. And as always, be very careful and very certain about who you are talking to before divulging any personal information.

Spoke with a male who asked me to verify his ph # from Google so I would "feel more comfortable " about speaking with him. When I tr to ask him addl questions about why SS Admin didn't write vs. blind call me he hung up on me. Don't trust giving your personal info over the phone EVER!

No they are a scam because they call you from numbers that you can not call back! Social security would call you from a number you can call back! They also called me but when I said I worked for the police department they hung up! It’s pathetic how ppl are so bad now days! Anyway after wards I called SSI. And they said there wasn’t anything going on with my social, so be careful with the lowlife scandalous ppl out there!
