Got a call from this number, recorded a voicemail, but actually didn't say anything.  I did report to Google a few days ago that a number they have listed in Google for an attorney's office is actually my phone number and reported it as an error (keep getting calls for this attorney).  Maybe they were calling to verify?  I will never know since they didn't leave a message.

This number called me but did not leave a message. I returned the call & it's Google Maps, but the number is only outgoing. I had sent a note to google asking them to update my biz address on my listing. Maybe that's why they called. Sadly, I missed the call, because I really need my address updated!

I did the unthinkable and called the number back.  Recording answered saying Thank you for calling Google Maps.  This line is not set up for incoming calls.  If you would like to list your business with Google....

    No Thanks
Thanks for the 6 am wake up call from the non-English speaking person who was rude and demanded information.  OK -- it really is Google.  Like ebay and it's evil spwan Paypal, I'm prepared to stop doing business with people who run their businesses this way.

Is there a way to get my business take off of Google?  I don't need Internet referrals for my business and don't wantto play with these people.

Received a call from this number. It's GOOGLE!

I recently moved my business to a new location. Google had the old address listed, so I filed an online request to update the info, saying I was the biz owner. They had updated, but called to verify that it was a legit request.

I appreciate it, because someone has been illegally using my trademarked business name & hi-jacking my online directory listings, adding THEIR phone number & email address to my listings!  They've been claiming to be my business, trying to divert my customers to them. It's been a constant battle to keep my listings correct, while waiting for my court hearing to shut them down. Most listing companies will automatically update when requested and don't care if the info is correct, or a scam. Google does, and I appreciate their effort to have a human call to verify listing info when there has recently been a change requested.

    Thanks GOOGLE!

I had sent an email to google maps because there was an error on my google maps listing that I was unable to correct. They called today from this number and referenced my email to them about the error, and they corrected it for me.

    Definitely Google Maps.

English not spoken very well and they started asking me questions about my company.  When I asked who they were they said Google and that I had complained about my listing being incorrect.  I had done no such thing.  She started talking about the previous company that had been in our building and I verified that they were gone and told them nothing about my business.  She then hung up.  I agreee with others; if this is Google, quite unprofessional, although they readily identified themselves when asked.

It's Google Maps correcting business information. It's usually a good thing if you have a business to prevent people form getting lost or going to an old address, but if you don't want calls from that number you can just say "please don't call again" and businesses know not to call again. No need to be rude.

    wondering still
This must be one of those top secret items, where they cannot confirm whether this is a legitimate or illegitimate inquiry.  But it definitely seems illegitimate because of the quality of the call and no one who has actually had contact with the number seems to believe it is legitimate.
So I say ignore the calls.
Google does send letters or cards occasionally.  Oops, I better open the one I received recently.

I'm here in Canada. The guy who called me from this number had bad English (sounded East Indian). He said he saw my address on my website and started asking about the buildings and property.  I said multiple times that we rent the property for a one weekend event.  He kept trying to ask about what he sees on the map and began asking about the buildings.  I redefined my statement about renting.  "We do not own that property. We, as a company, do not have a physical location. We operate out of my home.  I can give you the P.O. Box I use as a mailing address but if you want property info you have to call the property.." for the first time in the conversation there was a pause... "You don't have a physical location?" me- "Technically no." him- "Okay. Bye.".
Left me confused.  Began to wonder if the call was from a horrible production company looking to shoot here.  Starting the conversation with an intro would have helped.  After reading here, I won't be answering that number if it tries again.

I just had to send this message to Google.  I could only find a feedback form that states they don't get to everyone.  Does anyone have a more direct way to communicate?
Message I sent: My listing is GONE.  This morning I got a call asking about my business and talking about the buildings on the property I have listed as my business. I explained to the man with the heavy accent, that we operate on that property on the weekend of the event and the business address is a P.O. Box. If they would like to talk about the property please call the property. They hung up. Did a search and found:  https://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-650-253-2000/4 so I did a search for  The BC Renaissance Festival and I can't find it.  All my listing seems to be gone. All that info deleted? WTF? We are a FESTIVAL.  The address on line is legit.  The company is legit.  We do do events all over the place and that listing has been the way MANY gigs have found us.  People coming to the event has searched us on Google Maps.  Now it's gone because some guy I could barely understand has the power to delete me because we operate for one weekend on the property on our listing?  I'm typing this on an iPad so either the listing is deleted (which is pissy and I expect you to fix it) or this device can't find it but even my profile seems a little incomplete.  Photos and info is gone.

I work for Google Maps.  This is a general support line.  This is not a scam.  If you call the number back it goes to Google.  650 is the area code for Mt. View, CA, Google's corp. headquarters.  Our reps are simply verifying information that YOU made public by posting on our FREE listing service (in the case of Google Places).  So, do us a favor and make our lives easier - we are doing you a favor with free marketing.  Wow, all you have to do is call the number back.  Some people are very ignorant and paranoid.

You can't call Google Places back, or else it would get inundated with phone calls.  Call the number back, it goes to Google Main Line - support.  The reason Google Places doesn't leave a message is because you can't call back, and they are simply trying to verify the information you posted with their free listing system.

This number is Google, not some shady scam or govt. agency.

For everyone who doubts this phone number. I actually work for google maps, and personally make calls from this number.  I have read alot of the comments on this forum and understand everyones concern for being scammed.

Google maps makes calls to make sure each business is really where they say they are and nothing more. We already have all the information in front of us we just need to verbally confirm it with a representative at the business, so we arent trying to get information out of you or sell anything to you.

We at Google understand where you guys are coming from  (it is weird that someone calls to ask for your address without disclosing who they are right away.) but there is a reason why we verify the information the way we do.

The reason why we dont disclose who we are right away is because alot of the times when we call to verify and tell them were from Google, the people with fake locations right away, hop on to a computer and pull up the fake information they put on the listing. Defeating the whole purpose of verifying the information.

When we dont tell them we're at google and ask them for their address they would be less inclined to give us a fake address as to not risk the possibility that a customer would show up to a fake location.
One thing is for sure is that even though we may not ouright say were from Google, if you ask we will tell you were calling from Google.

Please remember that Google places is a FREE service!! Since its free, Google is doing you guys, the business owners a favor by providing effective advertisement free of charge!! But in order to stay on Google places you must abide by the Google policy, And part of our policy is to call to verify information. If you don't want to verify that is fine with us, it makes our job easier and your listing will just be taken down. but It is guaranteed that if you get a call from any number with (650) -253- xxxx it is from Google. thanks guys hope this helps!
