Scammers often times spoof official agencies--I had one spoof Federal Marshalls office last year--when I called they informed me that I was out of their jurisdiction, and there was nothing that they were aware of. Check with the IRS but don't use their number; go with an official number from online.

Scammers sometimes post on these sites hoping you will not realize that they are part of the scam. Easy to spot though. Poor grammar, spelling and other issues that anyone with a 6th grade education can spot if they look carefully. Good luck.

I figured it was a scam....I have NEVER had the IRS call me....all communications have always been via the USPS.

I just received the same kind of phone call.  They called from a 716 number, which when you call back it's not in service.  I did call back the number that they left 877-968-3413 and it does sound totally legit.  Once I was asked for the case # or last four of my SS# I hung up.  I decided to go do some googling and found this.  Also found a link for all of you to read.  Yes this is a scam so be careful.  DO NOT GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFO.

    Scam do not call!
Go to IRS.gov it provides you with numbers to call if you believe you do owe taxes.
"The truth is the IRS usually first contacts people by mail – not by phone – about unpaid taxes. And the IRS won’t ask for payment using a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer. The IRS also won’t ask for a credit card number over the phone.
For more information or to report a scam, go to www.irs.gov and type "scam" in the search box."

Scam...called my father's number with some B/S about him needing to call.  My father has a perfect record with his taxes and knew the minute they called it was a scam.  I called the 800 IRS #.  Indeed they said scam!

This is NOT a scam. I owe the IRS and have been making payments of $200 a month. I missed last month and got the phone call. I did call this number and the person had my account and the amount of every payment and the correct balance I owed. I Just told them I will make another payment tomorrow and they said fine but if I did not they may have to start garnishment against my income.  Don't fool yourself.  This is the real deal.

Your best indication is that you haven't received anything in the mail. If you have questions, call the IRS main number 800-829-1040.

Sure Mike, but unfortunately we cann see through that and know that you are part of this Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Others who read this, do not fall for it.
    Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm
The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone. The scammers use voice over IP lines (e.g. magicjack (Ymax corporation). This is always against these companys' terms of use and can lead to termination of their contract. However only law enforcement can initiate the contact if you yourself are not a customer. Therefore, report it also to your local law enforcement agency. Ultimately this is a case for the FBI legal attache in Islamabad or New Delhi. If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction (and the NSA can finally be a force for good).

    Dear Senator/Representative XXX

As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to demand decisive action from the FBI, the IRS and other federal agencies against organized crime directed against American citizens from abroad.

As widely reported by local and national media all across the United States and warned about by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (see http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm) a tidal wave of fraud using Internet phones has hit the United States. Millions of dollars already have been stolen by criminals impersonating federal officers from the IRS while hiding in countries like India and Pakistan, where most of the calls originate. There seems to be no end of it in sight.

I have personally been targeted by these scammers but it is the most vulnerable among us that I am concerned about primarily. The scheme is specifically singling out those that can least defend themselves against these crimes, in particular the elderly. I am also worried that given the origin of these gangsters, the money stolen from US citizens may be used for financing of terrorism or other activities directed against the national interests of the United States. But in spite of this clear and present danger to our country and its citizens I have seen no action worth mentioning by the FBI, the IRS or other federal agencies so far.

As a member of Congress overseeing the law enforcement agencies tasked with fighting fraud and ensuring national security, I implore you to make sure that they act on these threats and are given all the necessary resources to target these criminals in cooperation with foreign law enforcement.

    Yours sincerely

I received one of these calls. I know from experience with the Social Security Administration that attempting to call back the caller ID number often fails with a"number not in service" message. The robocall gave me a 877-963-3413 number and a specific case number. When called, it was answered with a "you have reached the Internal Revenue Service, [we called you about a tax matter]" yadda yadda. I waited for the representative and she determined by the case number and my name that I wasn't the party they were attempting to reach. She immediately volunteered to remove my number from their information and that was that.

It was all very above board, no phishing and actually the Internal Revenue Service.

Yeah, you received a call from: 716-206-3218 and it was the IRS calling about an EXISTING payment plan.

    Right.

    Total clap-trap.

I am inactive enrolled agent with the IRS.

If you are on a monthly payment plan,  on the documents you receive every month is  correct number to call if there's a problem  and sometimes the name of an agent. I can guarantee you it isn't   716-206-3218.

IRS does not garnish wages in the absence of an extensive attempt to negotiate with the taxpayer  and there's no way they'd do it on a single missed payment or call.

You are a complete bloody Indian fool of a scammer.   We must be cutting into your income stream.   Maybe this scam is falling apart as more and more people learn to recognize the scam.

Christ, I'd like to see the authorities do something to you.

Anyone who even thinks this is NOT a scam is a dolt. Just Google this and you'll find pages of info on these scams. Even the IRS has posted something to the effect that they DO NOT CALL OR ARREST YOU, AND TO BE CAREFUL OF THESE SCAMS.

They call if you have repeatedly failed to REPLY TO A WRITTEN REQUEST. AGAIN, they will NOT CALL YOU right off the bat.

People, use your brain for once. If they continue to call, BLOCK THE DAM PHONE NUMBER. Sheesh
