- AbmorazIt is both a scam and not a scam. It is a legitimate PNC number (or at least it was). It is also a number SPOOFED by scammers (no more difficult than putting a fake return address on a letter). I got a call this morning. They used my real name and said the last 4 digits of my card and social security number. The problem is that I don't have a PNC backed card, nor am I a PNC customer. The card they talked about was my Discover card.
Someone out there is spoofing the PNC number and getting a hold of your basic transaction info (not that hard these days) and trying to phish the rest of your info out of you. WHEN IN DOUBT: hang up and call the number on your card. NEVER give any info to a caller when they called you, even if you are a customer of theirs. Kindly explain that you will call the company they are representing back on that companies main phone line and get directed to the same department. If the caller offers to give you a direct line or pressures you in any way, tell them NO THANK YOU and call the main number (again, on your card).- Caller: PNC (spoofed)

- Cindy in Illinois replies to Steve in Seattle| 2 repliesI have gotten several calls from this number to call about verifying charges to my debit card. The call is completely automated. Is it legit?
- Cindy in Illinois replies to MikeThe message said they were available 24/7. This was all automated, shouldn't I be speaking with a live person?
- Badge714 replies to Cindy in IllinoisNEVER! give out personal/financial information on a call you did not make. Then only on numbers you verified as real. Take your paper statement, phone book, Bank's web site, or in the case of a credit card- the back of the card & LOOK up the number. Then call. NEVER reply to a number in a text, email, voice message, or fax. Check FIRST. What everyone needs to know is the number may be real, but not the caller. It is so easy to spoof (fake) caller ID. A voip line & a few dollars in software & your caller ID could say "The White House".
- Vicky TI have received automated calls from 1 800 225 5671 yesterday and today. They claimed to be PNC bank, they wanted me to key my zip code to prove it was me. When I didn't answer the phone they left a machine generated voice mail with this 800 number. So I called my PNC branch today. They don't recognize this number and are sending me a new debit card. Shame we have to be so darn careful but we do!
- Caller: PNC
- ElleLegitimate number, though I think you people who are getting scammed are probably getting calls from someone else who is spoofing this #.
Recording from PNC fraud dept. I called back and the recording only asked for billing zip code. Already knew my name and last 4 digits of acct. All transactions were mine but one was bigger than normal so that's probably what triggered a fraud alert. I appreciate them being so on top of things though.
If you aren't sure about a call from this #, just use common sense and call your bank back at their own number on their website. But most likely scammers are just spoofing this # to get a response.- Caller: PNC Bank
- T replies to JAYI'm on the phone with PNC and they just asked for my Social Security number
- Redd| 1 replyThis number is LEGIT. I literally just got off the phone with a Pnc rep and she confirmed this number is an automated service they use when they suspect suspicious activity on your account. They are just trying to make sure the purchases were made by you.
- Caller: PNC Asset Protection
- MidNYteStorm replies to ReddThe problem is that there are bogus operations that spoof their caller id information in an effort to trick people. That is why people should call a number that they are familiar with.
- BrendaCalled and didn't leave a msg. If it was legit they would leave a msg. Call the number on the back of you're card to make sure. This is a scam.
PNC rep said fraudulent charges on my account.- Call type: Text message
- jimmyIf PNC were calling about fraudulent activity, don't you think they would have a real person talk to you?
- danielthis was PNC fraud detection centre. It was a legit call
- YesirreeGot a call from this number and ignored it as I didn't recognize it. They left me a message and it said it was from PNC and wanted to confirm some suspicious activity on my card. It even mentioned my full name and the last 4 digits of my debit card number. I called it back and got an automated voice confirming my telephone number and wanted to confirm the last 4 digits of my debit card.
That's when I got suspicious so I hung up and checked my account. All was good and where it should be. That's when I came on here and saw lots of very confusing and mixed reviews on this number.
Is it real? Is it fake? You can't tell by the comments on here!
So, I called the 888 number on the back of my card to confirm the number. I was directed to the fraud department and spoke to a representative about it. He said it was them calling and they had left the message. I made a big purchase the other day and they wanted to make sure it was me that made the purchase.
SO, what I believe is happening to cause so much confusion is 2 things.
1. The number was USED FOR SPOOFING for some on here.
2. People called a LOCAL BRANCH instead of the CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF THE CARD which I believe, local branches may not recognize all main numbers.
That's what I think. So, I believe, if you do get this call and are suspicious JUST CALL THE MAIN PNC NUMBER. THAT IS THE 888 NUMBER ON THE BACK OF YOUR CARD. THAT IS THE CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER. JUST CALL THEM AND THEY CAN VERIFY IT WITH YOU!- Caller: PNC Fraud Dept.
- DazedI missed the call two times. Both times it went to voicemail but did not leave a message. Also I did not get a PNC alert. This can't be a real PNC service.
- AnonymousNot a scam- it's PNC bank checking on fraudulent activity on a debit card. Kudos to PNC for being in the ball
- Caller: PNC bank fraud prevention
- Jimmy G.It is Not a Scam the number is a automated system from PNC Bank . I was just contacted because of a high dollar transaction order I did in another state. It's fraud protection . I called the number back and also called customer service and it was confirmed. It is not a scam. It's customer protection.
- Caller: PNC Bank
- LoriI just got a call too. it is the weekend the call centers are closed, someone got my debit info and made two purchases, it said PNC on my caller id but it was a different # then on the back of my card, they left an automatated message, and i called back, i told him i did not make the purchases, he said they would send me a new card in 5-10 business days and they would refund the purchases, now i am wondering if this is legit, help!!

- Angela| 1 replyI bought a shirt from Sevenly.com today which I have done before. I got an automated call from 800-225-5671 and decided to call back. I input the last four digits of my card and my zip code, and confirmed it was me they were trying to contact. They asked if I had made a purchase at Sevenly for the correct amount that I paid for the shirt. I pressed 1 to verify that the charge was made by me, and all is fine. I'm just curious to know why PNC thought a $30 purchase was a suspicious charge, especially when I have bought from this website multiple times before.
- KristinaI called PNC about this number just now, and it is not them Making the calls, but your account has probably been compromised and they'll suggest sending you a new card.
- Caller: phishing
- kristina replies to AngelaPlease call the number on the back of your card, this was not PNC!
