Just got a call from this number, it is a scam, not USAA, nor is the text message that follows.

I called USAA Fraud Department.  THIS IS NOT THEM.  THIS IS A SCAM.   Anyone who says otherwise is working with the scammers or has been scammed further.  You may also receive texts and emails.  My email came from  ​USAA.Web.Services@customermail.usaa.com.  They confirmed this is NOT USAA.  They also confirmed what email they did send today that was legit.  If you get this call, contact USAA Fraud department at 800-945-6759 and forward the email to abuse@usaa.com

This is the Automated Fraud department from USAA...go to the USAA website @ https://www.usaa.com/inet/pages/ContactUsBank and you will see the number at the bottom of the page under Automated Security Verification - Credit Card

Legitimate call verifying recent purchases were really me.  I was ~1500 miles from home address.

There are a lot of crazy people in this world; DO NOT ANSWER YOUR TELEPHONE :-(

I called USAA after receiving an email stating to call this number.  I spoke to their fraud department and they stated they never sent me anything.  They asked me to forward the email to abuse@usaa.com

This is a good number from the USAA Fraud Unit to verify charges on your Credit Card - If you don't trust this number 800 272 9440 use the number on the back of you Credit Card to contact USAA.

Agree this is not a scam. ySAA calling to verify credit card charges, turned out to be fraud from someone ekse. I also received text messages. I called number on back of my USAA credit card. This is legit.

Part 2: this number can also be spoofed to trick you into divulging a password, pin, clues, etc. Stuff that can compromise your account. The real USAA automated fraud alert will only ask if you are who they need to contact and then only ask if you authorized certain purchases, and then only after you've been notified that your account(s) is/are on a fraud alert.

It is USAA Fraud Dept and it's true.  To be safe, I checked the account online and called the number on the back of the card instead.  Indeed, some POS is making fraudulent charges.

got an email from USAA.Web.Services@customermail.usaa.com and it had this number on it. After some secure messages on the website, there were some questioned charges but no fraud. ALWAYS CALL A NUMBER YOU KNOW DIRECTLY TO THE BANK. Do not reply to emails or use they number any communication provides. Do the extra minutes worth of leg work and find the number for yourself!

This is a legitimate call. Just call the number on the back of your credit card, or on their website, but be sure to call because they are trying to protect you.

called just now. 800-272-9440 is listed on the USAA website (on the Contact and Support Center page, under Banking Services) as a number for "automated security verification / credit card."

I do wish 800notes would offer "legitimate call" or similar language in the dropdown menu for "call type"!

That has been discussed and unfortunately, due to the spoofing of numbers, there is a risk that visitors must get the impression that a call labeled "Legit" might really be coming from a crook.

"Legit" - as a label, too easily becomes a value judgment, and some users might take the word as almost an endorsement or warranty that a call from that number is Honest and Pure.  You and I both know that is not the case.  In the case of your call from USAA, usually the safe action is to call the number yourself, not trust that the call coming in is to be trusted.

USAA fraud. Alerted me that my card number was punched in down in Florida. I live in Minnesota and have my card. They rejected those charges, and will be sending a new card.
