- HHUN replies to usaa userYou are WRONG! USAA members are not lying. Call the number yourself. It's a legitimate number. I'm a USAA member and my card was deactivated due to a suspicious chage and I received 7 calls, one email , and had a security notice on my online account asking me to call. Educate yourself before you jump on here and claim we are all liars. You are putting people's credit at risk by giving bad advice. There are too many people/members who have posted here confirming it as legitimate. All anyone has to do if they don't trust the 800-272-9440 number is to call USAA's main number or credit card number on the back of the credit card to confirm.
- HHUN replies to Fraud Squad| 1 replyNope it's a legit number...please confirm for yourself before you post nonsense claiming phising scam. We all have to be on edge and on our toes when it comes to phising scams, and there's nothing wrong with being cautious as I was. I instead logged onto my account and saw an urgent notice to call them. So when in doubt, call USAA directly. This is not a scam, so please educate yourself first sir. This is in fact USAA doing a great job at preventing fraudulant purchases on our credit cards. Good job USAA!!
- hjmI thought initially that this was another one of those highly annoying 1-800xxx telemarketing phone calls.
But, I checked by Googling the number .... was fortunate to see the notes above.
Our card was being used at a "luxury goods" dealer at the tune of $5475. I am so glad for 1800 notes and USAA.- Caller: USAA Fraud division
- DavidLegitimate number from USAA. I was skeptical too, so did not respond to any of the prompts on the 800 number, but did call USAA directly and confirmed of fradulent activity.
- Caller: USAA
- DG replies to TCAReceived a call today from this same referenced # regarding someone having charged fuel at a California gas station in Sunland, CA & a nearby city on two recent dates. I advised that we did not use the card for these purchases. They stated they would cancel my cards (7 to 10 days to replace). I contacted the toll free number on the back of my card and they confirmed that it was their fraud department number and that the action was as reported. I can see where one could be scammed by someone posing as a fraud detection agency, but, we can also see how, despite the inconvenience and potential embarrassment canceling the card could have; the benefits of avoiding the costs and stopping the abusers from further activity on that card are more than offsetting the downsides. So, I found this service helpful. I only wish they could catch these criminals and make them pay. The experience is unsettling to say the very least.
- Javk replies to JoeSame as above.
- John replies to Retired Air ForceThis is good advice. I also called the number on the back of my USAA credit card, and the operator verified that their fraud detection unit had indeed called me.
- Chuck| 1 replyIf this indeed USAA, why don't they identify themselves on the caller ID. I don't answer anon calls especially 800 number.

- Ramblin RonThis number called twice this morning. We did not respond. We checked accounts online and found nothing amiss. We called USAA and were told a third party monitors for fraud and for security purposes even USAA doesn't know the caller number. We had a recent Amazon.UK and a large fuel bill which may have triggered the alert. USAA did have a record of the calls indicating the caller failed to make contact. So everything is on the up and up. This is another example of why USAA is such a good company to do business with.
- jonasThe call is from a USAA automated service.
Call USAA right now, use the number on the back of your card!!- Caller: usaa
- IdentityProtection replies to ChuckI spoke with USAA and they advised they are working on the information that the callerID gives, to let people know it is USAA instead of a phishing attempt or telemarketer. In any case, even if it says USAA, always call the number you are most familiar with for your bank. There are lots of fraudsters out there.
- beware of phishersThe number is USAA -- but it is best to not trust ANY unknown number which requests personal information on callback.
Go to your [USAA] account and call the number which you usually use tp contact the alleged caller.- Caller: USAA
- DLThis is USAA's Fraud Department.
You can verify by calling the number on the back of your card: 800-531-USAA (see https://www.usaa.com/inet/pages/ContactUsBank)
Enter member number/PIN
Say Fraud Department (will refer to is as Security and Fraud)
Say Report Identity Theft (will transfer to operator)
Tell the person you got a fraud alert voicemail and they will ask which card (credit/debit) and then read off the previous few transactions.- Caller: SERVICE 800
- Denis replies to PalikarI have been with USAA for 30 years and they definitely call when there are charges to my cc that is not the norm. When I go to Europe they have called to verify that I was indeed in there. Luckily my husband was home to let them know that I was in Europe. You need to do your homework. I just called USAA to verify and it is their automated number that is used when strange charges are made to your account. You are right it is not on the website because you can not make calls to that number. AUTOMATED. And yes they will call ALL the numbers listed in your file, cell and otherwise.
- Fraud SquadPart of a fraud campaign targeting numerous financial institutions. Note the pattern of shill postings all claiming the number is real - an obvious giveaway.
The large number of phony posts claiming the call is real come from some con artists spamming the site to try to fool people. There is a similar pattern to other fake calls claiming to be from Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, PayPal, etc. all with the same shill postings:

- DQ| 1 replyWell, I receive 4 messages and a call from this number. The messages said they are send from USAA Alert, and ask me to verify some transaction for a card ending XXXX. I looked at this message very carefully and realize I even do not have a card ending with that number! Clearly, this must be scam! I also called my own card bank to verify my thoughts, my bank said there is no problem in my card at all. For those who receive the same number, please read the messages/listen to the calls very carefully, pay attention to the details. I believe you are smart enough to know if it's a scam or not. By the way, after reading all the previous feedbacks, you may get confused. Thinking about this: if the number is not scam, why people saying it is? Do this people benefit from saying this? Clearly not!
- Bayonne replies to DQWho knows why some folks do what they do? Or why you chose to comment as you did. What I know is that I got a message to call the Fraud Dept. about a charge by a UK firm. It was a genuine charge and a genuine call. I've been a USAA member for almost 50 years, and my only problem in that time was with a moron adjuster they hired as a subcontractor several years ago.
- WoodChuckSo I see all these post about the number 1-800-272-9440 because I got a call from it this morning. I also got a text last night from USAA... Asking about charges on my MC. The number is real and it "IS" USAA when I spoke with them a few minutes ago I asked and told them what call and text I recieved from them. They verified the number and text sent to me!!!
This all stared when I needed some $$$ and I used my credit card at a credit union ATM. I entered the pin wrong and card was flagged, then I called and changed pin over phone. A couple days later I used the card at Dicks sporting goods and walmart and that's is what prompted the text and call.
I owe all this investigative work to my wife... The DEA investigator... Lol she stared asking me what I was buying at Dicks and Walmart?!?! I was busted for buying another rifle & scope... Hahahahahahahahaha
True Story...- Caller: USAA
