- SAKI am so glad for this site and the history of the comments made here. I received this call twice and then looked it up here to investigate. USAA fraud?! Let me check. I called USAA using the number on the back of my card. Yes indeedie, someone tried to put a charge of over $2000 to an online site (walmart.com) using that card.
I repeatedly urged the USAA representatives to identify the source of the call as USAA, not "800 Service" because I decided to ignore the call.
(oops, I told them it said "telemarketer" but I cannot check the phone history while simultaneously talking on the fone. I think. My bad.)- Caller: USAA Fraud Prevention
- CMBPossibly the Fraud Prevention Department at USAA? They called both my cell phone and my home phone this morning. I didn't answer because I didn't recognize the number. The voicemail was an automated message asking me to call 800-272-9440 to verify recent activity on my USAA card. I didn't call the number back, but checked my USAA account online instead. There was an urgent message posted on my account to call to verify recent activity as well, but the phone number was DIFFERENT. I called the USAA number and found out that someone had just tried to use my card to charge around $9 at a motel this morning in a different state. Apparently there is a problem with scammers who try to use cc numbers and charge lots of small amounts. They had already declined the charge and put a hold on my account. They're issuing me a new card now.
- Caller: USAA Fraud Department?
- Bob-USAA MemberThe number appears valid. Instead of calling it back, I called the number on back of my M Card. They transferred me to Fraud Dept. They verified that they had tried to contact me. Someone had tried to charge $1500 online, with store pick-up to my card. It was rejected because they didn't know the correct zip code.

- NateWas in class and didn't leave a message when I didn't pick up but shortly after got a message from my spouse asking if I had made a purchase because USAA was concerned. USAA doing a good job looking out for my credit and money.
- Nyadnar17This message is legit. Called USAA directly and they confirmed they had tried to contact me. Had Fraudulent charges that they took care of right away. Thanks USAA!
If you get this call you should call USAA ASAP.- Caller: USAA
- Fraud Squad| 5 repliesPart of a fraud campaign targeting numerous financial institutions. Note the pattern of shill postings all claiming the number is real - an obvious giveaway.
The large number of shill postings claiming the call is real come from some con artists spamming the site to try to fool people. There is a similar pattern to other fake calls claiming to be from Amex, Citibank, Bank of America, US Bank, Chase, RBC, PayPal, etc. all with the same shill postings:

- S in AZ| 1 replyThis is the USAA Fraud Prevention Department.
If you're distrustful, log into your USAA account online and go to your credit card account. There will be a security notice with a different number to call back.- Caller: USAA Fraud Prevention
- Richard replies to S in AZThis happened to me too. The 800 number is legit; it is USAA. I still think it is better to call USAA directly and not punch information into a robocall.
- JackI just got a call that said there were questionable charges on my credit card. They first called my cell, then home - knew both our first names. I called USAA and turns out the call was valid, and someone tried to use our cc # for two internet purchases totaling over $1100. Fortunately it was rejected cause they didn't have the 3 digit security number or correct billing address. Cards cancelled and new ones on the way.

- Palikar| 2 replies800-272-9440 is a PHISHING fraud number - NOT a USAA number at all !!
All of these previous messages that think 800-272-9440 is a USAA number have been PUNKED !!
I specifically questioned receiving any phone call from a 272 prefix number claiming to be USAA. I've been with USAA for over 30 years and USAA does NOT use any 272 prefix numbers! So I called USAA directly and spoke to their USAA Fraud Prevention Dept "directly". According to USAA Fraud Prevention Dept - this number 800-272-9440 has NOTHING to do with USAA whatsoever. Moreover USAA Fraud Prevention Dept was able to verify that this number, 800-272-9440, is a double-connect mobile number - it can send out robo-calls and still receive your phone call to it. USAA does NOT - repeat does NOT use mobile phones. All of this adds up to PHISHING folks - PHISHING !! If you don't believe me - look up the USAA "official" website and call the proper USAA number yourself!- Caller: a fraudster claiming to be USAA
- IdentityProtection replies to PalikarYou are wrong, sir or ma'am. This number is in fact USAA's automated fraud detection system. However, it is understandable to be cautious of any numbers you are not aware of, and to call the bank "with the number on the back of the card". USAA's fraud dept is open 24/7 and is happy to assist you in reviewing the activity on your account to make sure it is legitimate. If you have this call, call the USAA immediately to review the activity. If there is suspected unauthorized activity and you don't reply, there will probably be a hold placed on your card until the activity is verified. Please check your accounts on usaa.com, and even if you don't see activity, there could be unauthorized activity lurking under declined transactions. Just to make sure you are aware that I am not a "shill posting", I have a cat named Goose who comes to the song "I love you Baby"
- DawnI receieved a call for 800-272-9940. I looked up the number and found postings about fraud activity on USAA credit cards. I did respond and got the fraud charges removed. I then took the time to call USAA number for lost/stolen credit cards to verify that the 1-800 number was no a scam. GOOD WORK USAA !!!
- DLThe USAA Fraud Prevention dept. I called the number on the back of the card after getting a call and verified it was USAA.

- USAA-alsoGot two calls in succession. I called the number on my card and they transferred me to Fraud Prevention. They confirmed they had called and were checking a transaction I'd made overseas.
Just call the number on yoiur card to avoid phone phishing.- Caller: USAA
- stop calling meGet two or three phone calls in a row from this number at least twice per month.
- BillJust received a call from this number, and the "automated Person" said it was from USAA. It then asked me for my zip code, and I when I actually gave them the wrong zip code, the automated person said they would turn me over to Security, and to stay on the line. I finally hung up. Am checking with USAA right now (waiting for them to respond) to see if was from them. The "person" did not call the first two numbers on my USAA account, but the third one down, so do not think it is a call from USAA.
- Bill2This call is legit from USAA. First time I ever got one. In my case it was just an unusual shopping spree the day before mother's day. In the local area, but at the type of stores I had probably never shopped at before.
