If you are late on your payment, they will call multiple times a day.  Before I got caught up with my payments, I made arrangments with WF on the current payment.  They informed me that, until the account was current, I would still receive calls from collections.

Although I am unsure of whether or not this is a legit number, I am NOT going to give them my account info/SSN over the phone so that they can confirm I am the right person they mean to call. Wouldn't a financial institution know better than to expect customers to give this info over the phone? They call me up to 4x/day and I'm so tired of yelling at them to stop. What can I do to legally make them stop? Who can I report this to? Can the phone company block the number or would I have to pay?

The number 800-678-7986 was legit. Told us a mtg payment was late. Not true... paid it through Wells Fargo bill pay yesterday and the payment isn't late until 9/6/11. We paid the Wells Fargo mtg via Wells Fargo bill pay. On top of it all we would have paid it the day before but bill pay was down. We really don't like the whole Wells Fargo set up. Bill pay is way harder to use. They have the ugliest logo. Now they are starting to bug us with calls for no reason. We have been customers for many years and are looking to bring our business somewhere else. Any suggestions?

Is this how they are spending the stimulus money?

    OK everyone -

    This IS from Wells Fargo

You do not have to be overdue in any meaningful way to start getting these calls. Like most people, my mortgage comes due on the first, i pay by the 15th to avoid a late charge, and under no circumstances allow it to go 30 days late, at which point your credit may well be affected. Today is the 7th, and I just spent half an hour on the phone with the main WF and then the Collections Dept - which is where the call originated from.

Bottom line - if your mortgage is due on the 1st of the month, Wells Fargo considers it "past due" on the 2nd, and you may start receiving these calls on as early as the 5th. When I* said that this means WF expects everybody to pay their bill  on one day she said yes (I wonder if the bank's system could even handle the strain of everyone paying on the same day, but no matter).

My conversations were largely about semantics, but important points, i think - first, the message included the phrase "this is an attempt to collect a debt" - language that everybody with a pulse in the US knows signifies  debt collectors looking into an overdue or delinquent account - i told the (very nice and helpful) ladies to whom i spoke at WF that this language crossed the line into intimidation when used to someone whose mortgage account was in good standing, and that i can come to no other conclusion than they are basically using this type of language to scare people who don't know better into paying up a few days earlier than they have to. Also, they will attempt on the phone to extract from you and notate to your account a "promise" as to on what day you are going to pay. i said - "why do you need a promise - the mortgage that i signed is your promise. if I promise to pay say by the 10th, but then find i can't pay till the 14th, legally i'm still in perfect shape, i haven't even been charged a late fee - but you then note my account that i have broken my promise? - both ladies concurred with this assessment. so, i said, I'll just keep my mouth shut - no promises?" Sure, they said, you can do that. "And there will be no penalty?" "Correct".

So, at the end of the conversation, even though WF insists my mortgage is "past due" (as is everyone who does not pay exactly on the first of the month) I managed to extract from the courteous ladies both that my mortgage is in "good standing" and that  there is "nothing wrong " with it.

    hope this helps someone

The 800-678-7986 is from Wells Fargo Collections. They start calling as soon as the 1st of the month is past for home loans payments. I guess they forgot there was a grace period associated with the loan. I get the calls as soon as the 1st goes by. Same thing happens with GMAC, my other home  loan.
They say 'it's a courtesy call to remind you...blah blah".

I know my obligations, thank you.
Now leave me the heck alone.

And by the way, they never leave a message. They just keep calling until you make the payment.
Doesn't matter to them if you are within grace period... they just keep calling.

This number IS Wells Fargo, I received 4 calls from them on my cell phone today and finally called back. The guy started advising me that they report all late payments to the credit bureaus. When I asked him what in the world he was talking about because our loan with Wells Fargo is NOT past due he told me my payment was  2 days past the due date. After I told him I had made the payment on line through their website he confirmed that it was paid. I pay it every month on the same day and have never been late. I just called a local bank and am going to refinance my mortgage to get away from these leaches on society. They must be really hurting if they have to harrass people that they THINK are two days late on a payment. I even told him my statement says I have a grace period up until the 19th of the month which he said is true but they start collection calls as soon as it is late. I read stories where people go months and even years without making a payment but because their system messed up and didn't recognize my payment, that has already cleared my bank, I get 4 calls in one day. Stay away from Wells Fargo if you want to be treated with any respect.

It is Wells Fargo and anyone that does business with them ends up regretting it. It's funny when they were taking money from the American taxpayers, to keep their butts from going belly up, they were very humble but if you owe them a nickel they act like the mafia. I too had a payment that was two days past the due date but well within the grace period and I thought Uncle Vinnie was going to come out and break my leggs. I just refinanced with a local bank and will NEVER do business again with these morons.

They are associated with Wells Fargo, whether by direct or 3rd party out sourcing, tasked with collections to accounts and their associated phone numbers.

Above is a link sourced directly from Wells Fargo home site.  Although it is a legitimate lead to the bank, it is never a good idea to give information to an individual when they call you.  Rule of thumb, ask for the name of the inquiring or collecting organization, and then call back with a yellow paged or authenticated web site contact number.  It's much safer.

They keep calling me. I think it because my orginal mortgage was through WF and they will not disscuss with me why they are calling untill I give them all my personal banking information and address. I think the person making the call must get paid a bounus for collecting info so a specialist can call back and recomend a better deal on a mortgage at lower %.

WFB mortgage company. If they don't get the payment by the due date, the very next day they put you on the robo-dialer … even though you have 14 days before it's officially "late", i.e. they hit you with a late fee. Send a brief note by snail mail to the address on your statement for correspondence and tell them they're no longer allowed to contact you by phone and that all contact must be written. They will stop calling (by law) and probably won't send mail until you've been delinquent 30 days. If you know you're going to be 30 days late, call them & give them a heads-up … they'll be nice & work with you (only because they want your acct. to be current - delinquent accounts make their numbers look bad - not because they care anything about you or any other of their millions of customers..
