While on the phone with this number I searched and came up with this site and info. I told the rep, I was only comfortable with calling Wells Fargo directly. I did this and they did verify that it was Wells Fargo Fraud prevention calling me, to verify suspected fraudulent charges.

I received a call from Wells Fargo saying that there had been suspicious activity on my debit card. They gave 800 704 0855 as the number to call back (the caller ID was a Charlotte, NC number 704-590-6161). When I called the 800 number they asked me for the phone number they called which is silly because they have caller id, but whatever, I entered it. After not being able to "recognize" my account from the number (again, why the hell not, they had just called it), they then asked for my full card number. This didn't seem right to me so I decided to call them directly using the number on the back of my card. Painful. First, I had to find someone to talk to. They couldn't access my account through my debit card number. They wanted my checking account number, which I did not have on me. I had to login to the web site and download one of my statements to get it. Once they were able to pull up my account, sure enough, there had been fraudulent activity on my account. Apparently, I had made purchases in a cafe in Virginia (which I had) and purchased goods at a Walmart in Alabama within an hour of each other. Luckily it was for only $25 so it wasn't too bad, but I then answered a dozen security related questions like my last 4 of my social and then the next 20 minutes answering yes/no questions in two departments (often the same questions) like, "Have you ever shopped at this merchant?" Uh, it's Walmart, I may not be proud of it, but of course I have. "Does anyone know your pin?", "Would you be willing to prosecute?", etc., etc. In the meantime, they closed my account and I have to wait 5-7 days (i.e., 2 weeks) for the replacement card to come (just in time for the holidays). So yes, it appears to be real, but their process has some serious flaws not the least of which is  a textbook phishing voice mail.

This number is for the automated system for Wells Fargo Fraud Department. This number is legit and IS NOT LISTED on their pages at their bank. They only have their customer service rep lines listed on their websites. I talked to the fraud department and VERIFIED With them that this number is indeed their automated system. This Automated system calls customers about unusual debit/credit card activity. I attempted to call the number 10 times and so far it has given me the Wells Fargo Fraud Department Automated System. This system verifys your last 5 transactions.

It will recognize the number you have on file with them and proceeds to the transactions menu. You do not type anything into the system unless your phone number was not recognized. This is not a scam and definitely not a fraudulent call.

I have had calls before from this number before due to my heavy transactions I regularly do. This automated system is in place so people who need to remove the hold on their cards are able to verify their transactions and move along.

If the number isn't recognized in the system, you will not be allowed to proceed until you call WF's Fraud Department. This number is real guys. If you guys want to verify it, call them.

I am house-sitting for my parents who are out-of-town on vacation, and received a robo-call that left a message on my parents' machine. I don't pick up their phone so messages can be picked up from them remotely. Any way, since I do not have access to check their account statement online, I called my mother and told her that "There was a phone message for Dad, from what appears to be WF about some fraudulent activity. Call the number on your card and have him speak with them, since you are out-of-state, your purchases may have caused an alert on your account." I never gave her the 800-704-0855 number. I feel confident that their account has not been compromised, but since they're using their card in PA and not FL where they live, it was flagged. My mother confirmed they had just made a purchase using the debit card in question. Though I work for a company who will call to verify information (a very large mail order pharmacy), I never give personal information out on an incoming call. Always call the main number associated with the company, unless you already recognize the number and have verified that it is legitimate. My personal belief is that this is likely a legitimate WF number. Those that believe this is a scam have done the right thing: contact your financial institution directly if you are not sure.

"This number is for the automated system for Wells Fargo Fraud Department" is a BIG FAT LIE.
Mamba posted on 27 Jan 2012 on page 3  "I just got off the phone after calling the legit WF Fraud number direct from their website. The rep there said this IS a known scam and had no record of 800-704-0855 as a legit WF number."
800-704-0855 was POSITIVELY IDENTIFIED by the real WF to Mamba as a SCAMMER number.

You mean "This system verifys your last 5 [FAKE] transactions", don't you? Guaranteed to be FAKE because EVERYONE who calls 800-704-0855 will hear the SAME 5 FAKE transactions, is supposed to panic, press #X to get a live SCAMMER rep who will then steal the victim's account and personal info, followed by the victim's money and ID.

OR.....   "It will [NOT] recognize the number you have on file with them" which will then require victims to spill their account and personal info to the SCAMMERS.

So many ways to phish the poor victims of their IDs and $money if they would only call this SCAMMER number !!!

    1.  CallerID is *NOT* a trusted source for legit WF phone numbers.
    2.  If 800-704-0855 calls you, DON'T answer or give away any info.
    3.  NEVER call 800-704-0855 back.
    4.  If you need to call WF, use a number from a TRUSTED SOURCE (back of card, bank statement, website, phone book)

Who cares whether 800-704-0855 is a WF number (and it is NOT)?
Who cares indeed when there are so many legit WF numbers from those TRUSTED SOURCES that readers can call?
SCAMMERS, that's who! SCAMMERS who want victims to call up and give their info away.
And why would WF send you a SECRET WF number to your CallerID that is NOT A TRUSTED SOURCE for WF numbers anyway?

Long convoluted story giving the same FAKE conclusion that 800-704-0855 is a WF number (and it is NOT).
Only SCAMMERS want victims to believe 800-704-0855 is a legit WF number (and it is NOT) to steal victims' money and IDs.

Laila is an ANONYMOUS poster and there was nobody at 800notes' door to verify that she was actually called by the real WF before she was allowed to post. Nothing she says should be believed to be the truth. Laila could be Condy Rice pretending to be "Laila". I could be Santa Claus pretending to be "anonymous". Any bank will tell you it's a REALLY STUPID IDEA to call up numbers that show up on your CallerID and answer security questions!   Mrs. Claus and the Elves say Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii !

Okay, I can see why you would suspect an anonymous post and I'm not saying call the number. It's ridiculous that Wells Fargo uses an unverifiable number, but since I had found this forum when I was trying to see if it was a valid number, I wanted to add my 2 cents and share my experience. I wrote Wells Fargo a long email essentially saying how horrible it is to use what looks like a phishing call to start a legitimate fraud investigation and the pain on doing it from the main number. I suggest others do the same. I'm not saying trust the number. I'm saying Wells Fargo has a really bad process. Let them know.

This is valid; I received today and I didn't answer thinking it was a scam until I went and check my ATM record and found 4 fraudulent transactions dated today.  I contacted Wells Fargo about this number and here is their response:

I just got a call from this number.  Since I didn't know the number I didn't answer and then looked here.  I do not have a Wells Fargo account. Anyone who thinks this is Wells Fargo needs to consider that banks don't make cold sales calls to drum up business.

Fortunately my cheap TracPhone has an option to block calls, and this number is now blocked.

"It's ridiculous that Wells Fargo uses an unverifiable number" is a FALSE SCAMMER ASSERTION. It is not ridiculous, it is nonsensical, and the reason it is nonsensical is because it is a FALSE ASSERTION. No bank uses an unverifiable public-facing number to interact with customers.
"I'm not saying call the number" is irrelevant. Your intent is to continue to falsely assert that this is a legit WF number (and it is NOT) because it is vital for the SCAMMERS that victims believe they are calling the real WF (and they are NOT) when asked for their account and personal info by this number.

This IS a legitimate call from Wells Fargo and it is for fraudulent use of your credit card.  It is in your best interest to call the number on the back of your Wells Fargo credit card and check to see if you have any fraudulent charges on your card.  Luckily they contacted me after someone tried to charge $1, and then $0.96, but they were just running those through to see if the numbers and information were correct.  Good job Wells Fargo!

I received a message from 800-704-0855 stating it was Wells Fargo Fraud department. Obviously, I was suspicious. I called Wells Fargo back using the 800 number on the back of all their debit cards instead. They verified it was Wells Fargo Fraud calling me from 800-704-0855 and they were attempting to verify recent suspicious charges. Turns out someone duplicated my debit card and attempting to make several large purchases on the other side of the country. Number is valid. HOWEVER, folks BE SMART and always call your bank back at a valid number printed on your card or statement. They can easily verify if they were actually attempting to contact you.

But do not ignore these calls. It just takes a moment to call your bank back at a KNOWN number and verify your account is good.

My post is intended to share my experience with this call, not to validate or disprove anybody else's post. Take it as you will.

I made some major purchases throughout the day yesterday with my debit card and these string of purchases must have tripped their fraud detection, especially since i made an online purchase late at night last night which seems unusual.

I did not answer their call from 800-704-0855. I listened to the voicemail and the automated system stated my name told me to call the 800# back to verify some purchases.

I call the number back and it verified my information using the phone/caller ID they originally reached me from. They did not ask for an account number because they were able to verify me via caller ID. I used my cell phone which is the number listed on my account. Then the automated voice listed 5 recent transactions of mine with the store and the amount purchased, which was accurate to what my recent purchases were. I hit 1 to verify, and that was the end of it.

Now, here's my 2 cents for this whole ordeal. For the sake of security, I should trust that no other 3rd party institution should have access to these transaction records without me giving up any personal information to access the account such as CC/Debit Card numbers, account numbers, passwords, PIN, etc. I did NOT give any of this information up over the phone, and they were able to list transactions to me over the phone. This leads me to highly believe this is WF. If this was a 3rd party and they already had access to my account, my account would be cleaned out by now.

It's smart to always call listed numbers with WF to verify nonetheless as personal diligence. But in my case, I feel this it is legitimate since I did not have to give up any personal information for the system to list my activity, let alone my spending activity for the evening being slightly abnormal to begin with.
