- AndyReceived calls from this number claiming my Visa card was locked because of fraudulent activity and requesting card digits to unlock the card. I didn't fall for the scam. When I called the bank they told me there were no issues with the card and that this number was phony.

- X replies to Luigi SemenzatoNo matter what..... Never call a number left on your phone always refer to the number on your particular card never trust these posts for any valid information!!!!!!!
- CurtisAgain - And to echo many above who seem to be erroneously getting called shills - the number is VALID. It connects to the American Express Fraud Prevention department. See the following search result from the americanexpress.com web site (searching on the last 4 digits): https://search.americanexpress.com/app/answers/display/a_id/809/kw/9289
If you're still concerned, call the number on the back of your card and ask to be connected to the fraud department; they probably have something to communicate or verify with you.- Caller: American Express Fraud Department
- world travelerThis is a real number for American Express Fraud Prevention service. I had been traveling and using my Amex card in Europe, then Florida, Virginia, D.C. and California. Because I didn't take the calls, they suspended my card. So I got on the phone with them at the store, and they gave me this number to call back to verify my activity. After I did. my card was reactivated.
- Caller: American Express Fraud Prevention
- C HAR LIE| 2 repliesIt's fraud. Hey morons. There are apps that let u type in any caller ID number u want to show up when u call out. So that doesn't mean [***]. It's fraud.
- Caller: fraud fake amex
- malm replies to Almost ScammedI received a phone call from the 800 number this morning. I called American Express at the number on the back of the credit card and I was told that this is a legitimate phone number for the fraud alert center. When I called back to 8008249289 they asked for the last four numbers of my credit card and my mailing address to mail me a new card, as they are canceling the current card due to a suspicious charge yesterday. It seems legitimate.
- Tripster replies to FRAUD ALERTDon't mess with people's lives. I did the same thing Antfarm did and he's right. In hindsight, I'd rather simply call the number on the back of the card rather than a potential fraudulent number - BUT - THIS NUMBER IS GOOD. My card is now cancelled because of a real fraudulent attempt and this number is the one that warned me. AMEX verified this through the number on the back of the card. Try it for yourselves and you will find this number to be legit. If you get a call from this number, there is probably something wrong with your account. So fix it before this [***] and others like her/him try to tell you everything's OK.
- R U SGot call from 800-824-9289 last night when I ordered something online for my son. Charge was blocked and American Express fraud prevention services called. I didn't trust this number, so I called back on the number on the back of my card (Always the recommended option).
They asked if I had my card and confirmed that the transaction had been blocked as suspicious. I told them it was valid. They unblocked the transaction.
Many Thanks to them for at least trying to prevent fraud.- Caller: American Express Fraud Prevention (The Real Thing)
- R U S replies to C HAR LIEMaybe some of these are fake, so you should always be skeptical.
- Buff Flyer| 1 replyParanoia running a bit rampant on this particular page. Or maybe it's just X. X, dude, there are meds and therapy for people like you.
For the normal people here looking for answers, this is a legit number for AmEx's fraud alert system. However, as others have said, best practice is not to return such voicemail messages to the number offered (this one will ask you for your card number and safe word), but rather call the number on the back of your card.- Caller: AmEx (Fraud Dept)
- HenryConfirmed - this number belongs to American Express Fraud Alert. I received the call and an email at the same time. This number can still be faked by thieves so call the number on the back of your card or login to your on-line account rather than relying on this number or what they have to say.
- Caller: American Express
- AmexCardHolder replies to j-zed| 2 repliesThis number is a valid number. I got the call, but could not get to the phone fast enough to answer. Google got me here, so I called up my Amex account online, and there was a message to call the same number, which is the fraud detection division. I called, they queried me about having the card in my possession, and did I make an online purchase with some company I never heard of yesterday. The canceled the card number and are sending a new one.
My online account now reflects a new number. You folks who think this is a fake number are morons. Call Amex with the number on the back of the card if you want, but if they are calling you, they have a reason. - AmexCardHolder replies to FRAUD ALERT| 1 replyYou are lying. The number is valid.
- AmexCardHolder replies to Almost ScammedNo, the number is valid. Call the number on the back of your card and check. More importantly, if they are calling you, they suspect something fraudulent is going on. You can ignore it if you want, but it is your money.
- AmexCardHolder replies to C HAR LIEIf it is a fake, why would AMEX put it on the web site. Why would there be a message to me on my online account telling me to call them. The only fraud in this, is you.
For others who are wondering, call the number on the back of you AMEX card, that should be plain enough for verification. - SteindogThis number is Legit. I don't know why people are making up these fantastic (fantastic, as in FANTASY) stories about frauds. If you're worried, CALL THE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF YOUR CARD. It's that simple. If you call that number, you WILL get AMEX, and they WILL tell you the truth. No little fraud gnome sneaked into your wallet and changed the number on the back of your card while you were sleeping. Really. I guess many of you out there feel the need to lie to people and make up stories. That's really sad, I'm sorry for you.
- Caller: AMEX
- Joseph replies to Tony| 1 replyCall the number on your AMEX card if you have doubts. I received the email indicating a security alert, but the charges were legitimate. I used the phone number on my AMEX card and they did say that they had sent the security alert email.
- Fair WarningAmerican Express' Contact Us Page does not list this number:
https://www212.americanexpress.com/dsmlive/ds ... oter_contact_us
Perhaps it is still legitimate, however if it is, AMEX should be thorough enough to list that number on their contact page so people can be vigilant.
Calling the wrong number to 'prevent' card fraud is like paying for malware on your computer that says 'Your computer is infected! Click here!'- Caller: Unknown
- Rob| 1 replyI got a call on 5/16/2012 from 800-824-9298. I wasn't able to answer it but called back. The message at the beginning said it was American Express Fraud Department. I hung up and called the number on my American Express credit card. They verified there was no issue with my account. Then I gave them the 800-824-9298 and they looked it up, it is the number to the American Express Fraud Department.
- Caller: American Express
- It Ain't American Express replies to Buff FlyerLooks like the shill for this fraud is back folks!
