Mr. Joe "Crookshank" keeps calling me from so called Peter J Stephan Barristers regarding some sort of matter, reading all of this and other posts it appears to be a scam. I do not live in Calgary nor have I ever been in Alberta. I have never had a membership with good life fitness and I keep getting calls from them,  I have never been in any of their facilities and have not had a gym membership in 26 years. Both my ADULT children do however this should not reflect anything on me.. I have never signed any kind of paper work or cosigned for either of them..... I will not be responsible for anything that I have not signed for. This is way to shady for me... Having Googled "Peter J Stephan Barristers" They are not BBB acredited!!!!! It has major SCAM written all over this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unless they can leave me a detailed message regading the call they will not get a call back from me nor a penny for so called funds owed!!!!!!!! Just another scam

I called Goodlife and asked how to cancel. They told me it had to be done in person through appointment only. I made an appointment for myself and my wife with the cancellation fee ready. On the appointment date we met with the manager who started the cancellation process with us. She begun to ask for personal information, I refused and stated I would not be giving personal information to them as I didn't want to be contacted after cancellation. She informed me that "You agreed to this when you signed up." I said "No, I only want to cancel. You've confirmed I am who I am, you do not need me to give you my personal information for a file to cancel."

It went in circles until she said "I'm concerned for your health, and I won't let you cancel."I looked her dead in the eye and made a wise choice, I left. It wasn't what I wanted to do, but thank goodness I did. I immediately went to the bank and put a stop payment on the account. My wife continued to argue with them and eventually was able to cancel her account. I believe she was forced to give personal information. What she did find out is that they had lied, and an in-person appointment is not the only way to cancel, since one can do so over the phone.

Then of course flash forward a year, to today when I finally called this number back after calling my for who know how long as I too do not answer numbers I don't recognize. I definitely owe Goodlife money, there is no doubt of that. I would assume I owe them my entire membership up to them cancelling it on their own accord, plus any non sufficient fees that they may have incurred.

I did exactly what they asked of me. I showed up and tried to cancel my account. The women refused me based on her personal concerns. This is the only place I have EVER given my personal information to, and I was reluctant at the time.

The operator was garbled and impossible to understand. I told her so. She magically got extremely clear. I said "Wow how did you magically get super clear?" Then she got garbled again. I said "Look I can't understand you, please put my through to your supervisor." She repeated whatever she was saying, then empty pause. "I said, I can't hear you but I assume that was 'yes, one moment please' right?" she said "No, I said if you give me your phone number we can clear this up." I said "No, I will not give any personal information over the phone. Please put me through to your boss, or your bosses boss." Again she argue about me giving her a phone number. I repeated myself. "No, I am an irate customer and I demand to speak to your supervisor or boss immediately." This was followed by another pause. "Hello?" I asked. "My supervisor is on a break right now." She replied. "That's okay, I'll wait here. I have your phone number, I will call back as many times as needed to speak to your boss." She put me on hold.

5 minutes later Joe comes on the phone, also garbled. I explain to him I can't hear anything that's going on. Then he magically get's clear and says "We are having work done next door, sorry about our lines." Then I respond with "Wow, you're pretty clear now. What gives?" He repeats himself "The lines are poor (garble garble garble)." I launch in. "No, slow your speech, I can hear you fine if you speak slow. I know you're a busy man, but just slow down and I can hear you fine." No issue communicating at that point until I asked for his company name and personal name. I made him repeat it numerous times so I could get it down, and that's how I arrived here.

For the life of me, I could not hear his last name. He refused to repeat it again. He instead begun to ask for my personal information. "I told him I would neither confirm nor deny any personal information over the phone. That all I wanted was his last name, and I could end this phone conversation." He argued; "I've told you already, you're being difficult." I laughed and responded "You've already admitted your phone lines have poor connections, I can't hear your last name, please repeat it so I can follow through with this call using other methods." He then took a defensive stance "My lawyers name is (such and such) his number is (xxx) you can call him..." I cut him right off "Are you trying to intimidate me?" I asked. He dropped his attitude and became professional again. "No he said, I'm not." Again I cut him off "Well sir, when someone is in a discussion with you and you all of a sudden mention lawyers and to call them, that is a known intimidation tactic."

Afterwards we basically argued in circles with me trying to get him to clearly spell his last name, which he refused. He repeated my phone number back to me, and asked if the person he had on file was me. Again I refused to confirm or deny any information over the phone and explained to him that I was calling for his information, not to give out my own.

This thread was filled with awesome information. I do agree if you owe them money, pay it. I owe them money, I will not pay it. I know I'm doing something illegal, but I believe I am morally right, and accept any potential consequences of my actions.

Some of the good tidbits were about having legal right to collect our of their province, practice law out of their province, and whether or not they are even legally allowed to collect using their exact methods. Since each situation can be different for each person involved, I highly recommend reading through every post as I did.

I'm really looking forward to them calling back, and seeing what some of their answers are to some of the legitimate questions I can ask.
    Best of luck to everyone.

We cancelled my son's membership. Told no additional fee to cancel.  We paid monthly for almost 3 years to goodlife and I think used gym once or twice.
Heard nothing more from goodlife about cancelling membership so was surprised a year later with a phone message left to call this lawfirm at 866 number .still not anything about what they wanted. Only reference # and number to call.
Only figured out by searching number what call might be about.
If business is in niagara region province of ontario why would they use a lawfirm from Calgary.
Never got any calls or letters from goodife after cancelling which legit business would do u would think. Did anyone else?
Year later get phone message left about 4 times over 6 months to call law office with reference #. No reason why.
Still no letters from goodlife or their so called lawyer. I worked at lawfirm in niagara for awhile this is not how things should be legally handled.
Any idea what to do.  As we cancelled membership before end of month and put a stop payment for following month to stop auto debit from goodlife any further. No calls or letters from goodlife to contact us. Nothing from them sending to lawyer about payment. Should documentation not have been provided from goodlife. I guess I need to check credit score to deal with this scam and get some legal advice what to do.
How desperate is this company goodlife not to contact person themselves by phone or letter before waiting a year and sending off to their so called lawyer. Very confused annoyed.  Something does not smell right. Better not affect credit score. Glad I kept contract cancellation.

Ma'am, if this was TRULY legit, they would have sent you a letter via the post office, NOT via the phone, email, text or anything else. Therefore, it's safe to say this is a SCAM

I am a corporate member with Goodlife for two years but convinced my younger brother to try 3 day free trial around 8 months ago. We never signed for the yearly membership nor did we agreed to anything other than that 3 day free trial but just received a letter from this 'Peter J Stephan' that I somehow owe Goodlife $250+.
This is bulls**t. Not even going to buy my corporate membership next year and going to warn my colleagues from doing so.
As for this amount, not going to pay them a dime of my hard earned money

They are not trying to sue you, and never say they will in anything i have ever gotten from them. They use this agency over a regular agency. This is a lot better for you in the long run in terms of not immediately affecting your credit score. Im not sure they do affect it because they never collect your SIN number

Good for you for posting this! Yes there are scams but not everything is, and this company is 100% real. I have worked with them before for the company that hired them to collect our debts. They report the collected funds on a daily bases and work closely with us when balances were deemed not owed for a particular reason. It breaks my heart to read about all of this about them as they are one of the good guys.

So you know the number but came to a website that helps people identify unknown callers and complain about scammers, to replying to a post that's over 5 years old. That seems a little odd. Don't you agree?
