- FEDUPCOLLEGESTUDENT replies to I broke a contract, and I had to pay.HOW DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT, CLEARLY YOU WORK FOR THIS SCUMBAG AGENCY!!
SHAME ON YOU AND GOODLIFE FITNESS, I WILL TELL EVERYONE I MEET ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS PRACTICES. - BadlifeI just listened to a message from Peter Stephan, apparent collectors for goodlife. I too had canceled goodlife (by stop-payment through the bank) after they billed me for an additional year. I was too ill to notice that were billing me beyond the year I'd signed up for.
I have no idea how much they think I owe, but it must be a lot less than they would receive if I ever joined again. Their greedy business practices and attempts at intimidation have all but guaranteed I won't be back ever.

- Money Hungry Goodlife!!This "Peter Stephan" law firm seems fairly legit - however they're pretty dumb with their approach. I work at a law firm and knew they reasons why they might not want to disclose the reason for their call to me or mom, as they were calling about my cousin. Although, since my cousin is under age, they had to tell me what the purpose of their call was for.
Long story short - Goodlife as a GYM their facilities and services are great. When it comes to the customer relations part they're the dumbest people ever!!!! I've made this clear with the club I signed up for - and i guess the realized it since the manager that signed me up was no longer there. If they fix their logistics and their customer service they may have more people on their side. To get a collection lawyer to come after a high school student who owes less than $120 is just plain STUPID! Even the "lawyers" billable hour is more than that!- Caller: Peter Stephan - for Goodlife Fitness

- Cap replies to file a BBB complaintI've worked for a small company that had a terrible Better Business Bureau rating as a Corporate Sales and Marketing Manager. Filing a complain with the BBB does NOTHING. Companies like GL pay the BBB to be listed as part of the BBB. All companies listed on their sight have registered with them and pay a yearly fee. There are absolutely no impacts on the company for you filing a complaint, the BBB has no authority to tell said companies they must change their practices. You know what the company I worked for did? They resigned their membership to the BBB and requested all positive and negative reviews to be removed. Companies can request negative reviews to be removed at any time, the BBB will preform some half assed investigation with the person who filed the complaint and the company the complaint is about, who are they going to believe? Some random person, or a company who is paying them a yearly fee? The BBB is a complete crock.
- SueFor everyone out there that is uncertain, I hope this message will help you. I also got a call from Peters Stephen Barrister & Solicitors leaving their # 1-866-619-4296 with a case #. I called, they were very helpful, they gave me the head office number in London for Goodlife fitness to confirm the information. I went a step further, called the local fitness club asking for the head office number. They told me the Goodlife Fitness Corporate Office in London - Member Experience was 1-800-387-2524. I called the head office who also confirmed that they do work with the above mentioned legal firm. Everyone was extremely helpful and all the information matched. They had no problem with me going into the local fitness club and clearing up the outstanding amount as they would have it on file there. No need to send out any cheques or give out information over the phone if you are uncomfortable with that.

- StopCalling!Every time these people call, they never leave a message. I picked up once thinking it was my cellphone provider, but they didn't say anything and the line went dead. I was scared to pick it up the other times, in case it was some scam and my phone was charged a ridiculous bill.. I usually let unknown numbers go to voicemail (cheaper to hear a voicemail then long distance) but they don't leave me any message. Now that I know who it is.. I'm just annoyed, leave me a message and quit harassing me. Tell me what you want, I already explained the situation to Goodlife (now knowing who this is), and everything seemed to have been dealt with. So why are you trying to collect money I shouldn't even owe.

- Law Student replies to Al| 24 repliesI unfortunately have also received calls from "Peter Stephan", Barristers & Solicitors regarding my GoodLife Membership!! After studying law for last two years, I questioned the matter as well... it seemed very sketchy!! It sounded like the woman on the other end was even calling from a cell phone?!! It kept cutting in and out... very unprofessional I must say!! I set up to make arrangements to pay off the outstanding balance on my account, but I wanted to do some research of my own to verify it was actually a legit law office and my money would actually make it to GoodLife. I thought I would look up this Peter Stephan in a few of my handy Law Directories... I checked the Canadian Law List Directory (http://www.canadianlawlist.com/index.html) and I had no luck, I then checked The Law Society of Alberta because the woman had mentioned they were located in Calgary, Alberta. I then had luck finding this so called "Peter Stephan"... and he actually happens to be a licensed practicing lawyer. His practice information is under Peter John Stephan on the Law Society of Alberta Website (http://www.lawsocietyalberta.com/):

Sooo... after doing my research I realized that this was not a scam and it turns out I will pay them the moneyyy :S!! ...it will feel super good to get them off my back, but hate to even give them the moneyyy!! I would rather not have that affect my credit rating though, as I am a student and already fighting to get my credit back on track... & in my opinion, totally not worth letting it affect my rating!! Although I must say, I totally agree... I too thought it was a scam... & WOW, what a poorly run law office, NEVER go to Peter J. Stephan, Barrister & Solicitors for legal advice LOL... oh & F*CK GoodLife hahahahaha!! - Law Student replies to Law Student| 7 repliesOh... and just incase anyone wants the direct link to Peter J. Hope this helps!!
Take care & Best regards :)!! - SH in OttawaI cancelled my membership when I found a better gym. They called on numerous to call and ask me why I was not attending the club anymore, and I continually told their representative that I was no longer a member of GoodLife because I was working out elsewhere.
In my case, after I cancelled and filled out the forms to do so, GoodLife waited a few months and then had a person call me from Peter Stefan Barristers and Solicitors. They left a few messages around 6:30 and 7:00 pm to call them back, and the messages sound automated. (There is nothing mentioned in the messages about GoodLife. I received about 4 of these such calls before calling back...which is when I found out that the Peter Stefan lawyer was calling about GoodLife.)
When I called 'Peter Stefan' back, the person I spoke with would not give me their their name, only told me that my account was being sent to collection because of unpaid membership dues at GoodLife Fitness. When I asked what evidence they had before them from Goodlife (ie. my old membership forms, copy of cancellation form), and also what the firm's mailing address and direct telephone number were, they hung up the phone.
My husband went to the GoodLife location we formerly used after I had this phone conversation. He was told that managers had been fired from this location (in Ottawa) for causing these sorts of problems with members who had previously cancelled. My husband also had them look up my former membership, which was clearly cancelled on the GoodLife system. He was also told that the calls from 'Peter Stefan' are not from an external law firm, they are GoodLife's internal collections department, and these calls are how they make their money.
So, all this to say, don't even bother responding if you get calls from Peter Stefan Barristers and Solictors after cancelling your GoodLife membership. Don't be intimidated by their scare tactics.
GoodLife needs to gain better control of its employees and fire those who are lying to former members in order to scare them into paying money they don't owe.- Caller: Peter Stefan Barristers and Solicitors

- mem replies to AlisonI too was getting calls from Peter Stephon Barrister and solicitors. Leaving a reference number. Yes it is Good Life. I went in to see about a membership and I did not have my glasses with me but my girls were there. She said that I could cancel my membership anytime. Where I could not see to read the contract with them she ready it to me. She did not tell me of a cancellation fee or any thing. She said that if I was not happy I could cancel at any time. What should I do
- law student 2 replies to Law Student| 5 repliesI have read with interest the many comments regarding the Good life fitness Collection stuff. I too owed Goodlife some money and like the other guy, could not afford to let it effect my credit rating. The law firm is legit and they work for Goodlife, I am now in my third year of law and have worked several different practicums. I am now beginning to realize that everyones got a story, I am not guilty, I don't owe the money, some one else did it. The dog ate my homework. Point is, I used to be an athlete and since I got into this grind of law school, I became fat and lazy when it came to getting excercise. I quit the gym and got whacked with the fees, but thats not the worst part, until i got off my fat [***] and began exercising, i got really fat. So on top of the money, I was really miserable about not working out. If you dont owe the money because of a screwup send Goodlife a letter, keep a copy for yourself, if you owe the money then do what you can to make it go away. It aint worth the f``````ckin hassle.
- whatever replies to I broke a contract, and I had to pay.Let me guess, you work for them, dont you?!?!
They are anything BUT polite!
How low can you get, they try and take the food out of young university kids mouths for doing absolutely nothing for them
GoodLife Fitness centres are a Sham! Wouldnt join their gym if they paid me! - jesse replies to Law Student| 1 reply[***] goodlife
- UnimpressedI got a group membership with my father and friend in November of 2008 in Kitchener, ON and used it quite regularly although the facility was mediocre at best (what kind of gym lacks a pool/sqash court?). The fees were taken out of my father's account and my friend and I paid him in cash monthly.
In December of 2009 I moved to Alberta with my fiance, the day our plane left I went into the Guelph, ON location to cancel, filled out paperwork and was told that my portion of fees would be deducted from my father's account, my friend also canceled since he didn't want to work out alone and was told the same thing.
Around February 2010, my father called to verify that both my friend and I had canceled our memberships since he was still being charged the exact same amount as before. I called GoodLife to ask them what exactly the issue was and was told that there must have been a problem with my paperwork and that they would fix it. I asked my friend to do the same.
To my understanding, what GoodLife did was cancel my friend's membership successfully but take fees off my father's account and make a new account in my name.
Now I'm receiving letters from this "Peter Stephan" saying I owe $275 to GoodLife.
I have been told TWICE that my membership has been successfully canceled, and my friend has had no problems since canceling in December.
I have no plans to pay these fees as I have turned in my GoodLife card, filed the proper paperwork AND called to verify. I tell everyone who is looking into getting a gym membership to stay far away from GoodLife and their shady practices. I'm not at all surprised to learn that this is a reoccurring problem.
Luckily, neither GoodLife nor "Peter Stephan" have my current mailing address or phone number since I canceled before moving from Ontario to Alberta.
I urge everyone experiencing this not to pay as this is a problem with GoodLife not filing their paperwork properly.- Caller: Peter Stephan Barristers and Solicitors

- RajI got a call today and it said that it's from peter stefen barristors office and when i called them back I can only get a voice mail...what is this?
- From Calgary replies to Law StudentI just switched to Telus in August with a new home phone number assigned and I never joined any Good Life Membership. However I keep getting this ugly call from 1-866-619-4296. Maybe the previous owner of my new number owed their money??? [***] this company.
- student| 1 replyugh...i just got one of those letters but its at the place where i go to school so i won't see it for a week. i'm freaking out now. i had a huge problem with goodlife not canceling my "subscription" after 10 days (the rep said she'd call me before they were up and never did) so I ended up canceling it later. They said I'd have to pay the $100 fee which I was fine with...but then my rep e-mailed me and said she filed the paperwork, I wouldn't have to pay anything. Months later they contact me again, saying I have an outstanding balance...I forwarded the email to the main office, they said my balance has been removed and record of my account was removed as well. then someone called and asked me about this. i told them the whole thing. the lady said oh ok...thats all i needed to hear and hung up... now THIS happens. ugh...dunno what to do...guess i'll have to wait to see whats in the letter first...
