received a call this past week - knew it was a scam immediately - stated they were from capital one and wanted a routing and account number claiming we were late in payments - later in the day we notified capital one of the call and they are aware of that this is occuring.

I've been getting the calls for about 3 weeks now. They call from 7 different lines from 8am to sometimes 11pm even on SUNDAYS! I sent them my remaining balance 2 weeks ago to close the account and told my mom not to answer any phone calls. These people are incredible...

This is not Capital One and they are not calling from the United States.  They call my home and ask for my husband's ex wife, who lives 500 miles away and has never lived at this address or had this phone number.  The only thing linking her to this address is a joint bank account with my step son, also not Capital One. Already had it out with a lady about this who said she was calling from the Phillipines when I pressed her and threatened to turn her in to authorities.  They just called me again and hung up on me when I asked a question.  When you call the # back, they ask for your entire account number or entire SS #.  I stayed on the line and finally got a live one from India who assured me that they are Capital One.  Yeah, right.

I have been wondering what is the DNC Do not Call Program doing; because I was told that they created for that reason by the government and I have reported at least three times but nothing they keep calling; maybe if all of us reported then they take an action, so please do that go to Google and type do not call. and registrer your phone so we can see later.
    Bye bye.

According to the FTC website, by law they must stop contacting you if you ask them to remove your number from their call list or they may face up to $16,000 fine.  If they need to contact you they may do so by mail.

I am getting calls from a gazillion different numbers most likely Capital One - I do have two credit card accounts with them and both are a couple months payments behind.
I do plan to talk with them as soon as I figure out how I am going to settle, but it will be when I call THEM not vice versa. Who knows who is REALLY on the other end of the line - no way am I providing any information to an unverifiable party.
Some of the numbers they have called on leave the "Linda w/opportunties" message - others no message at all.

THIS IS WHAT I DO - immediately after I receive an suspicious call - I look it up on a site such as this one. If I find out it is a "collections" call - I save the number and set the ringer id to SILENT.

Not trying to avoid my responsibility - but at the moment I have NO idea how I am going to settle these accounts. For them to repeatedly call me is a waste of their time and mine - they could also use certified mail if they are SERIOUS about wanting to work something out.

Just my two cents (and that is about all I have right now!)

I went to their website (capital one) and got their cust. service #, 1-866-750-0873. I called it and after waiting through all the automated stuff ( might be a few minutes) I talked to a real person. They asked for my first, last name and phone # and they said they would take me off the calling list. Hope this works. I'am getting sick of these calls because I don't have an account with them.

Same here, they even called after 8:00pm, now that's rude.  Phone calls are from 10am to 7:30pm, that suppose to be.

If they claim to be calling from Capital One, then it's definitely a scam, as neither I nor my husband have ever had any accounts with that company.
We were inundated with these calls a few months ago (from several different numbers listed as "TOLL FREE CALL" on the caller ID). Every so often, I would answer one (out of curiosity). The caller always asked for a guy who was living in the apartment next to ours. I always replied that this was the wrong number, that it's been OUR number for 10 years, and that I had never heard of the guy they were looking for.
These scammers probably had a street address, a name and a phone number that all appeared to match and were trying to put it all together to go phishing. I'm sure that if I had stayed on the line and played along, the caller would have gotten around to asking for a Social Security number.
These people are NOT calling on legitimate business, they are NOT from Capital One, and they are NOT going to go away until telecommunications technology evolves to the point where the phones themselves can differentiate honest callers from the dishonest ones.

    Same here.

They are calling me from 13 (and counting) different numbers. I just block them as they come in.

Like the other banks, they raised their interest rates and monthly payments. I am on a fixed income and cannot afford to pay any of them anymore.

To stop phone calls: first, and most important, write a letter with brief "cease and desist" order of any and all communication to your person or home, by phone or U.S mail, to the creditor. Next file a brief "formal complaint" with the Federal Trade Commission (with copy of creditor letter)along with brief letter to your State Attorney General's Office (include copies of FTC and creditor correspondence.) Each letter should include a cc to your attorney...the calls will stop.
