Not a smart idea, engaging the scammers. At the very least you'll get more calls. Or they could "swat" (look up swatting) you. They also could start using your number as a spoofed number when they scam call other people. Wouldn't that be fun? Keep in mind that many of them are most likely overseas, they feel they have nothing to loose. Can you say the same thing? Just do not answer unknown calls and do not call them back.
FYI...*67 does not work on toll free numbers like 800-they can see your number-so by calling them back you just verified your number for them.
What you do is up to you.

No I won't , as I ran my call through the net  a bank of VOIP generic numbers and never identified myself. I'm not stupid.

What lead you to believe it's them? Just curious in your methodology

I got the same call in Massachusetts said they were located at 400 West Cummings Park they also said they were an attorney when I called him on that he admitted that he was a debt collector refuse to give me his debt collection ID number total scam my only suggestion is2 dial *67 then the number it blocks it so he can't see who's calling let's fill up his voicemail see how he likes it I just type out SOS on my keypad over and over and over

Y'see, *67 does NOT block your number if you call a toll-free number!

Your phone number cannot be blocked while calling toll-free numbers or emergency services.

Got a call from johnson smith and associates and left a message about needing to deliver some legal documents and someone being home at a certain time over age 18 it came from the number 888-742-6869, wow people are crazy

Got the same message 2 times this week.

This outfit has a Shill working this other thread.  I am hoping to annoy them by posting here before they get "jessica" over here to try and run the scam.  Looks like they are payday loan collectors.

I received the same call today from an unknown caller id. The caller left the following message " My name is Jessica Sanders, legal secretary for the filling department for Jonathan, Smith and Associates. Calling in reference to some legal documents that need to be delivered on Tuesday, someone over the age of 18 needs to be available to sign for them. (My maiden name), please give the legal department a call to confirm this address or reschedule this delivery.  You can reach Jonathan, Smith and Associates at 888-742-6869, in reference to case number #...). I would like to now how they are getting my information, its starting to piss me off!

Criminals masquerading as debt collectors attempt to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged (they use the bad check or hot check claim a lot) and go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished without actually being sued or going to court, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this, all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.  One of the tricks they use is to call your family, friends, neighbors and/or places of employment (past or present or both) to create panic and embarrassment so that their intended victim calls them and they can scare that person into paying their extortion money.  They will use the words “Mediator”, “Arbitrator”, or “Law Office” to make you believe that they are something other than a debt collector want-a-be and that they don’t have to follow Federal and State collection laws.  They do have to follow those laws, but they won’t.  They mention that they have received a Fax document, to create the sense of urgency.  They also tell you that if you fail to call them back you are "waiving your right to council", which is pretty much nothing but hogwash.  They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer).  Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them.  Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else.  


It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.  

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

We got the exact same message on our cell phone.  I am going to report this to the attorney general's office to see if they have any others. My husband is very upset over this.  I am also going to send this info. along to our attorney.  These idiots have nothing better to do than bother and upset people.  Maybe if enough of us complain, the state can step in and put them into doing volunteer work...really do some good...always something....take care...

Got a call from 855-549-5930 saying they were from the office of Johnson, Smith and Associates looking for someone with my last name and a different first name, someone who I have never heard of, in reference to the whole needing to deliver legal documents routine. The guy was getting really pushy about how many times they had tried to contact me and blah blah blah. I called the call back number and told this guy that I had no idea who this person is. He apologized, told me he would take my number out of "the system" and thanked me for calling back and letting them know. I hope this dude isn't using my number as his new base. The whole thing sounded fishy to me; especially after having received a similar call a month or so ago from the supposed Sullivan and Associates who didn't even know my name and didn't leave a call back number. It's getting to where a person can't even say "hello" anymore without getting scammed.

Thank you so much for posting this to clarify. I will end up getting a heart attack with all this scam callers about legal actions.

Just to add something. They call came from a blocked number but they said to call back to (855)549-5930 which I didn't. I googled Johnson Smith and associates and they are a CPA office so I called them directly and they told me they don't make this kind of calls.
So obviously scammers are using this company's name.

Glad I looked them up as I received the same call
